@johntaylor621124 күн бұрын
You don't need an office to sell houses . You don't need a bank to do banking. You can get a mobile hairdresser so don't need a hairdresser shop . You can buy fruit in a supermarket so don't need a fruit and vegetables shop you can buy meat in a supermarket so don't need a butchers. The list goes on and on . Towns are obsolete not needed anymore its just the way it is unfortunately.

If you drive literally 5 minutes out of Hanley you see two huge retail parks , one mile apart . They have all the usual big names , cinemas , marina , restaurants , hotel , industrial units , water park , free parking and even a dry ski slope . They are packed with people . The areas where they are built are where the old steel works , a deep mine and other old industries used to be . They were transformed over 30 years into the retail parks . Along with the loss of the main industries pottery and mining , plus internet shopping and atrocious council decisions by all parties over decades ... Gives a better overall picture of what is happening to the old towns . The community feel , independent shops , pubs , nightclubs and buzz of the traditional town centre has been replaced with huge corporate retail parks . Very convenient , easy parking but souless with none of the personal community feel of the old towns . The problem they cannot or will not address is what to do with the old town centres. Yes there have been promises of redevelopment but the last big scheme ... the developer went bust after everything had been demolished leaving a waste land . I could go on and on about councils decisions and developers but I'd be here for days . Positive note ... the people are proud and amongst the friendliest . They have been let down badly by all political parties .

There are huge swathes of people that live within 15 minutes walk of the places featured in this video. 15 minute cities would mean these places would become thriving again - especially in a city like Stoke-on-Trent with it's 6 towns. 🤦 It's more to do with the managed economic decline started by the Tories in the 80s. First the steelworks and mines closed. later on the potbanks closed. Manufacturing sacrificed on the alter of the hospitality sector and the financial services sector. Brexit was the final nail in the coffin. We're the first country IN THE ENTIRETY OF HISTORY to impose trade sanctions on ourselves by cutting ourselves off from the most lucrative trading zone in the world - the EU - which happens to be right on our doorstep. We get what we deserve for voting for this shit.

@@heroldable Times change. Old Industries die out. They need to be replaced with new industries and that often requires investment. That may require central government money and a solid plan for rejuvenation. This may mean the old buildings need to be bought up cheap and pulled down, because they are not suited for the new purpose. I get it. It's sad. It hurts to see a town like this. It’s been like this for many years. This is what happens when councils want to pay millions for a car park.. in a completely run down city centre. Makes perfect sense for the brown envelope brigade. Also millions on one way systems. It’s a very murky place in the day and at night. Just to think hanley was a vibrant party town about 15/20yrs ago. Lack of funding for these places down to governments building their posh train tracks at extortionate prices. Unwanted carparks and just generally abusing public funds for their own back handers.

I was born and raised in Stoke and now live in Newcastle under Lyme…the decline of these areas over the last 20 years or so is staggering. I rarely go into Hanley or Newcastle any more to shop as there are so few shops to shop in. When me and my wife retire in a few years we are moving out of the area to somewhere with a little bit of soul and good vibe. It’s a real shame as the majority of Potteries people are very hard working and extremely friendly.

THIS is the town where everyone around used to go out on a weekend to the many clubs, bars and discos. I knew it would start going downhill when the really good big shops started to close. BHS closed down and not many years after M&S and the giant Debenhams. I stopped going to Hanley about 5 years ago because EVERY TIME I came home feeling utterly sad and depressed.
