I could watch this 77’ Ashes again and again. Both sides class. Great to see Knott, Boycott, Underwood and co on top form. Cricket will never get better than this.

Again, thank-you! In this, more so the Old Trafford 1977 test, it was good to see women enjoying the cricket. In, dare I say, feminie attire. Feminism, etc was yet to make it's unheathy, unhelpful disfigurement. Yes. I'll get heat for saying so!

Alan knott had a weird stance - and how gratifying it was to see the Aussies clap his knock. Cricket was so hard but fair in that era…

Knott later adjusted his batting grip and stance at the crease by moving his top hand right round to the back of the bat. He looked even odder then, but his reasoning was sound. A short man, he felt it helped him keep short pitched balls down and to get in behind the line. His record as a wicketkeeper batsman was a very fine one so, odd or not, his grip/stance must have worked well enough for him!

@@markh9749his new stance did rather restrict his range of shots. He sacrificed some fluency.

Thomson's very close to back foot no balls with his foot landing almost on the return crease. I guess they're okay so long as the return crease isn't actually touched but it must have been desperately hard for the umpires to tell.

Came back after shoulder injury Thomson not as quick as his previous England tour in 1975

Boycott objected to a Scott being given the captaincy. ( Mike Deness)

He objected to facing Lillee/Thomson in Australia in 74/75, then Holding/Roberts in in England in 1976. Only when Lillee didn't tour England in 1977 and Thomson had dislocated his shoulder in December 1976 which reduced his pace dramatically did Boycott make a come back.

He vehemently objected to the Scott captaining England. Fact

@@daviddraper5485 No doubt. But Denness was sacked after the 1st test in July 1975 in England and Tony Greig was made captain for the remaining 3 tests of the 1975 series. And Greig was captain in 1976 against the West Indies. Boycott could have returned at any stage before the 3rd test in 1977, but he waited until the West Indies series was over, and then Lillee was out in 1977 and he'd been able to watch Thommo for 2 tests in 1977 already showing that he was half the bowler he'was in 1974-1976 due to his injury.

@@nyosito Actually when the England touring team was selected for the 1974/75 tour Lillee was recovering from a long term back injury and, if he was fit to play (very uncertain at the time) it was quite possible he wouldn't be as good as before. Thompson had played one Test a couple of years before which did not go well - to put it mildly - and was on nobody's radar, not even guaranteed a place in his State side. The thought at the time was that the Australian attack would be led be Max Walker.

@@graemestarkey7524 People who use the argument of Boycott not wanting to face extreme pace find it difficult to answer why Boycott took on and was one of the best batsman in 1980 and 1980/1 v an even more aggressive fast bowling unit than 1976 or the fact that Boycott played in series v Hall and Griffiths in 1966 and 1967/8 and the Australian side of 1970/1 had Lillee and McKenzie!!
