And before and after you have the shadow of fixing in the 78 World Cup and the cynical playing for penalties in the 90 one.

@@greglyons2526 I remember well that quarter final between England and Argentina, it wasn't really until Sir Bobby brought on John Barnes that we caused them problem's after we we're already two down. In the end Maradona's men were grateful for the final whistle in a match they'd largely controlled.

He was and got injured. Did them a favour as Bobby Robson brought in Reid Hodge and Beardsley,the latter in favour of a target man. It changed the way they played and were terrific against the Poles and Paraguay. They never really went back to a target man afterwards so those changes were quite far reaching

@@cerneuffington2656 true. Peter Reid was a bette player at that time and if I remember correctly went to Mexico as player of the year in div 1. Robson was a good goalscorer but Reid offered more bite and control in mf inho,hence the improvement against Poland.

Of the players you mentioned only Keegan was english...and he was retired when the campaign for Mexico 86 happened.

Football was more unique and less generic back then. Probably the better and more interesting for it. Dietary habits have changed Tactics have changed Skill levels have changed because the air of mystery between opponents is non existent. Every team plays the same now and most top players are multi millionaire mercenaries.

​@@JSL2000 I couldn't help but notice the other night during the England v Italy qualifier how similar in style most teams are now. Once over, England v Italy would have been a clash of 2 very distinctive styles. I think football as a whole, has been swallowed up into a whole encompassing "one size fits all" framework. In the 90s for example, when a highly technical side played one touch possession football compared to the long ball percentage stuff that was the norm - it was a novelty and a sight to behold. Now it seems that every team tries to play that "high press Barcelona Guardiola" way which has ironically made the game a tad more boring and predictable as a result. Sorry for the long winded reply.😊
