Snapshots of the British chopper scene in Hazel Grove Village, Cheshire, from the late 60's and early 70's. Song is 'My Generation' by the Who (as if you didn't know!) Easy Rider was the catalyst that inspired the chopper scene in England. The most popular bike to chop was the Triumph 500 or 650, and the frame of choice was the 'sprung hub'. As more and more American films and magazines featuring custom bike trends started to reach our shores, we built things like stretched frames, goosenecks, springers, ect. We had to build them as you couldn't buy the stuff! 74 c.i. Harley's were beyond reach for most with their cost, and lack of availibility, so Triumphs were the bikes of choice. Riding time was short in the North of England, so when there was nice weather in the summer, you rode the crap out of them and rebuilt and modified them (plus added more chrome) every winter. Hope this brings back memories for some.

An abiding memory. Blackpool C 1968. This 12 year old was amazed to watch a group of choppers pull up, riders walked onto the sand and some walked into the sea for a dip. Fully clothed.

There is a revival in the States that has the you g guys wanting to experience the days of their - and let’s be honest their grandfathers. Shame it isn’t up front here in the U.K. kids are paying fortunes to ride rat knuckles, pans and Brit stuff in the U.S but no real desire for Brit bikes here. Such a shame because no matter how you slice it, the old original Brit bikes were best. Not the sanitised EU compliant shit dealt up now. Hope you still ride and if not in reality still in your head. I still ride but for how long; we are definitely a dying breed. Peace.

@@iantaylor7840 Yeah, I still ride. I've a 2003 Yamaha Silverado bobber. 21" front wheel, lots of chrome, fish tail pipes. It started life as a full dresser but I sold all of the none essential stuff on e-bay. Price of old Harleys are through the roof but it's good to see certain shops, especially in Japan, keeping the old style alive.

@@mebf109e That’s cool. I built a bobber style A10 years back, it was in January 1985 Back Street Heroes - doesn’t exist now I reckon. Similar style though 21 front and 16 rear, genuine crocodile skin seat, based on a Sportster base and foam. Still got the seat, long story but it came back off a mate a few months back after 30 plus years. I’m a good bit arthritic now and my FXD is a bit of a handful, but I’ll persevere. Still building Beezas though; got two projects on the go and the scrapper might end up bobbed out. What goes around comes around eh. Stay safe bro.

I remember your mate coming to Mog's body shop riding SBA. I didn't know that John sold it! I think he let it go for 650 quid. (He was getting into drag racing and was looking for a car. He ended up with a 70's Road Runner) I should have bought his bike if I had known and brought it with me when I emigrated to the US. I brought my bike (0:22) to America and it was shown in Easyrider's 'In The Wind' section. John's was probably, at that time, the best Triumph chopper in England. Thanks for the comments! Cheers!

Ted Robinson Hi Ted. I do! However I never saw the bike completed before moving to the US except in a photo he sent me of it in the back garden of his Dad's house. I thought it was a 750, but either way, it certainly looked: 'the business' It's been almost 40 years since last I last spoke with 'Rookie' (as Jane, Moggy's ex.used to call him) Maybe I'll give him a jingle. 'Moggy' is currently the 'Drum Major' in the Palm Beach Pipes and Drum. Never thought that I would see him in a kilt!

Ted Robinson He came over in '83 or '84 and lived with me and my ex-wife for a while. His Dad came over shortly after that a bought a body shop by Palm Beach International Airport. John got it up and running and about a year after that he had a hand built '63 or '64 Corvette convertible replica (built entirely in England) that he bought there off some rich kid who was heir to the wonder bread fortune or something. Anyway, I used to meet him at the Moroso Motor Sport Park where he drag raced it. It might have broken out of the 10 sec barrier at some point. So shortly after that I moved to New York and visited him one year at the shop. He told me he converted the Vette into a '63 split window coupe. He made one run with it and it almost killed him. For some unknown reason it turned right halfway down the track and hit the wall. Car was demolished and it put him in the hospital and out of drag racing! Last time I spoke to John was about 25 years ago I think, to wish him happy birthday as we share the same day but two years apart. My Uncle said that the Cock is going to be torn down and the land used for a parking lot. Fukkin' 'ell. That place was an institution!! They still had Lou Reed's 'Walk on the Wild Side' when I first started going there in '68 and it was still on the juke box in '75 when I left. I can almost taste the Robbie Bitter now!

Mike Dobbs Hi again Mike. Well I've been trying to find Mog for years and finally I've found him ! Just really pleased that he's alive and kicking and seems to have a good life. I contemplated trying to contact him, but I sort of sense that he's shut the door on his old life. Heh-ho I'll leave well be. I checked up on the Cock and according to Robbie's web site it's due a rip-out and total refurb with a new name !!! Better off knocking it down and leaving good memories intact. Yeh Lou Reed was still on the box in the late 70's.Last time I was in there was mid 90's, popped in for a lunchtime pint when I was working up in Stockport. Like going back in time.Last time I saw Mog was at Santa-Pod in the 80's with the RoadRunner, just before his Pro-Paint North days. Was running 11's (I'm stretching me memory here) . Very surprised he had an off, assuming a mechanical problem, his preparation was always meticulous. I don't think any of us would recognize the Grove these days, pubs gone or converted into fancy bars, best chippy in the world up near the Anchor no more and perhaps saddest of all no more Mirrlees.....Still its all in the name of progress.....Yeh right !!! Have a look on Google Earth, strong drink and hankie may be needed !! Mike thanks for your time replying, much appreciated. Have fun !!! Regards Ted.

It was an alternative to (as the Americans call them) Cafe Racers that the 'Ton Up' boys used to put together. Sure these were for the 'Wow Factor', but we ran them hard in the good weather, they all had their MOT's and were meticulous and very well built. There obviously were some tacky ones, like there were rubbish Tri-tons and Trib-Sa's as well, knocking about the street....

Much More 70's than 60's as Easy Rider the Movie first release date for the UK was London 4 Sep 1969 & the rest of UK 19 Oct 1969, not much of the 60's left to get inspired. The Magazine Easyriders Founded in 1970 with the first issue in June 1971 would have given much more to be inspired by.

Barry, wish I could have met you before I went state side! I remember hanging with Gary at his house a couple of times as he was putting his bike together. (He used tissue paper between the spanner and the nuts so as not to damage the chrome.) Couldn't believe those D&D's springers had solid legs! Shipping costs from the US cost a fortune. After Gary sold it to John, he sold his Mini and brought a Triumph Stag. He never could get his bike to run right, very down on power. After John bought it, he pulled the timing cover off and the cams were not set properly. Quick easy fix. After that it went like stink! Glad you got it and put it to good use! I had my bike (0.21) at Belle Vue a couple of times and then Mog, Jane and myself went to the Edinburgh show with them. I remember the Ford Transit we used to get them there kept slowing down as the lock screw for the points wouldn't stay tight! Lot of good and not so good memories. Any mate, thanks for the comments!

But ape hangers had been around the UK since the mid sixties (Easyrider came out in '69) and there were a few rockers who were chucking their clip-ons, putting on smaller tanks, short alloy mudguards, up-swept megaphones or tulip exhausts and they were creating the equivalent of Yank style 'bobbers'.........

My older brothers all had Triumphs, BSA's, and Norton motorcycles. I used to do odd jobs at the Bultaco dealer to save money for my first bike. I didn't say they were non existent, I said British bikes were very popular, because the were faster, more dependable and cost less money. Most of the guys I knew that had Hogs were buying them at police auctions. Usually after they had been sitting for a few years. I bought my first Harley in the 70's and put up with the crap from cops, squares and other bikers for being some type of outlaw on wheels. They still were not mainstream until after they were bought back from AMF. But, I guess I must have been living in the twilight zone because "anywhere else" they were the bike of choice. Not!
