The English Parliament during the Early Modern Period was not a permanent organization. It was called and dismissed at the behest of the King/Queen of England. Cromwell being Lord Protector of the Commonwealth was granted the powers of a Monarch by his first Parliament. He only disbanded the Long Parliament because they were becoming as autocratic as Charles I (I don’t consider him a true tyrant in the modern sense of the word) was. After he disbanded that parliament, new elections were held and new MPs were elected. He called them back fairly regularly, roughly every other year.

Fingaz MC in my experience schools aren’t very good environments for learning, too many distractions, I spent most of my time watching over my shoulder and clock watching, just trying to run time down til I got out of there, I wasn’t interested in learning whatsoever, but I’ve learned more through self teaching on the internet since leaving school in the late 90s, you can gravitate to what you actually want to learn about instead of being forced to do things like cookery class etc
@Waltiswicked
@Waltiswicked 4 жыл бұрын
School history doesn't teach an intricate understanding of an enormously complex event like this. It's impossible to do that in a term of ten weeks while trying to assess dullard, easily-distracted boys and vacuous girls playing on their phones. Teachers use history to teach research skills, chronology, critical thinking, perspectives and analysis of evidence. Most people today couldn't discuss the rational exponents they studied in math class, nor what a literary device is nor what an enzyme is. These are things we all learnt in school. School gives you a chance to get interested in important things and the rest is up to you.

Im an avid & serious student of history, especially the French Revolution & the Napoleonic wars etc & you can see the seeds of future revolution being sown here in England in the wars between Parliament & the crown, fascinating. Imagine how pleased I was when my eldest granddaughter started showing a real interest in history & then claimed she was able to swot up on the important bits about the civil war by watching a KZfaq download that lasted less than 5 minutes. I made a few patronising “know all” noises, before she gave me her iPad & set this up for me to watch & I was really impressed by the content. It’s marvellously well produced & cleverly done & I look forward to watching many more of your mini history documentaries.

Just one issue regarding the amount of the Irish population that were left dead after Cromwell's campaign. The generally accepted statistic for the percentage of people Cromwell left dead is around 50% and some people put it as higher than that again. Other than that its grand well done :)
@JabzyJoe
@JabzyJoe 9 жыл бұрын
I saw estimates as low as 15% and some over 60%. But the one that I kept seeing was 'the population dropped by 40%.' But these statistics didn't state how much of that was due to emigration, famine, disease or to do with the fighting. So I just presumed the first comments on that statistic would be from people saying it was too high, so I just went with a more conservative estimate.

Catholic wife (and Pope's niece, no less!) and High Church beliefs notwithstanding, Charles was no fried to Papists. It was during his reign that the recently sanctified Thirty Martyrs were executed. Although heavily Calvinist, Parliament's cause was against Charles' top-down High Church Anglican conformity and were content to let Papists choose damnation in the name of freedom of worship. Therefore, many Catholics sided with and fought for Parliament.

How could Scotland and England and even Ireland be at war at this time since the king was king of both countries? Was he at war with himself?

King Charles l was meant to be Protestant / Church of England but he was very influenced by his French Catholic wife and her country where The King was absolute. History has shown that absolute Monarchs are doomed to fail.
