Welcome to the first English Civil War battle report on the channel. I've been joined by Miller of Millers Miniatures for this straightforward scenario using Warlord Games Pike & Shotte rules as well as the To Kill a King Supplement.
I'll be using the Royalist forces while Miller leads the army of Parliament.

Great game to watch, I do enjoy these edited battle reports. Dammit Warlord, do an ECW Epic release! Those filthy rebels need to be defeated for the King!

Thanks for putting this game up guys. I have learned a lot on how army composition works for Pike & Shot, plus how the regiments work on the battlefield. I had in my head that the pikes and muskets acted as one, but now I see that a regiment is much more like a brigade in Black Powder and the elements can act independently. Suddenly makes 28mm ECW much more appealing as 40 guys is needed vs 72... I thought a BP brigade equivalent was 120 guys!

Great game. Pike & Shotte is a great game. Love painting up these chaps, gradually. I live in Olly Cromwells' stomping ground, so guess which side i favour? Consider me subbed. If you had summoned Eddie, maybe the Royalists would have won 😀

Great game and well earned victory by the good guys. Not seen the rules in action before, but looking very interesting. Normally in Black powder type rules you cannot rally while disordered, mat be worth checking.

Martin you were kind to Millar, after his C-I-C failed his orders for the turn are finished, he should have done the other general first then the C-in-C last.

Well, there was a initial Royalist advance which i was really suprised came off as well as it did but the lack of support eventually saw that fall apart 😅

at 8:27 how can you shoot at the cavalry? there behind a woods. page 45 of the rulebook shows that example clearly.

Normally when we play the odd tree's don't count as woods, they are just for making the table look nicer, I can't remember if that was the case here but we normally declare which are full woods and which are just odd bits and bobs

hang on a tick... am assembling many guns (and reviewing rules for them), and you guys state that there is no penalty for cannons, but isn;t there a -1 to hit penalty if firing past medium range?? Has that been FAQ'ed out?

No you arw correct, it means that most the time your cannons will hit on 6's as either they'll be at over 1/2 range or firing at an unclear target. The QRS in the back of the book doesn't include the range modifier for artillery which is why it was missed.

so can i play as Landsknechts (Italian Wars ) vs someone who plays Battalia ( English civil war) or are each army only allowed in each era ?

There's nothing to stop you doing that. It all runs the same, you'd just have to square with your opponent the effectiveness of say the Landsknechts earlier cannons against the later ones 👍

@@MegaMusikMan yeah you could. I'm just saying that you may benefit from modifying things slightly to represent the fact that an ECW army is using firearms with 120 years of progress. But the rules are a sandbox to do what you want so I'd just do whatever works for you.

It was a great game. I am not sure if a pike block even against cavalry gets bonus attacking? An attacking pike block is meat vs a defensive stance when they can set the pikes properly. Either warlord have bombed a rule but attacking pikes should not get bonuses in my opinion. It’s like Line vs square you can’t attack effectively with long pikes. The cavalry could ride around them exploit their clumsiness. Just my opinion. Loved the terrain.

The pike block only got a charge bonus because the cavalry chose to stand rather than evading or counter-charging. I would have counter-charged, because infantry who charge cavalry are automatically disordered if the cavalry counter-charge. The pikes would then have been disordered and lost their charge bonus as well as suffering a -1 to hit modifier for being disordered, while the cavalry would have received a +1 to hit modifier for counter-charging. The pike would roll 6 dice needing 5+ to hit, while the cavalry would roll 8 dice needing 3+ to hit.

@@7thson726 I get it but I still think the rule is a bit iffy because even if the cavalry stayed put they probably would be in the buildings scattered around all over the place and the pikemen have to charge in with 12 foot pikes over walls etc breaking cohesion. But I presume the bonus was from them charging and not getting a penalty for being pike against cavalry?

@@granapriego totally mate 👍 Yeah the bonus was a simply charge bonus. The pike vs cavarly bit is added in combat resolution afterwards. I forgot to add the fact i was in a building to that as well. But I think the result would have been much the same as no casualties were scored by either side 👍

Great game, however a few observations on the rules: Infantry in battle line formation cannot turn to face; only cavalry and pike or other infantry in block formation can do so, so Miller's musketeers should not have been able to turn to face your cavalry (page 65). There is a -1 long range to hit modifier for artillery - see page 55. The artillery to hit modifiers were left off the Quick Reference Sheet. There are no automatic kills in Pike and Shotte (or Black Powder or Hail Caesar either) unless the target has a morale save of 0. Any unit with a morale save of 6+ or better always saves on a 6 regardless of modifiers (page 49).

Cheers for the points, normal kind of bits and bobs that get overlooked while filming it, like all my rulebooks i now have added post its on the front to remind me 😅 i completely didn't realise about the morale saves, cheers for that, i have made note for future games (of all 3 systems) 👍
