I saw this loco on a passenger train out of Euston at Hatch End,I was with my parents visiting my Gran in Harrow, and we were in an Oerklion electric unit (anyone remember them ) from Watford High Street.

Very interesting concept! Although I can see why the concept didn't take off; The tender and steam engine esque setup still needs turntables to be effective, plus maintenance costs of a gas turbine engine.

The main reason it didn't take off was the fact that, sadly, it's performance wasn't as as good as the modern Diesels. The idea was, with the Turbine design, it was going to have good fuel economy at high speeds, whilst poor at low speeds, much like Jet engines. The problem was that, at high speeds, turns out it's fuel economy wasn't any better than modern Diesels, whilst at low speeds it was far worse. She's a beautiful machine, but it's very clear why it didn't take off.

MsCreepyChan Why are two people needed on the footplate to operate this. No wonder this was sent for scrapping in the mid 60s.

@SteamlocoScrapper Same reason early diesels had two people. Unions trying to preserve jobs.

Jet engines never really caught on for ground transport, other than Abrams tank.

Ain’t that multifuel though?

@@spartangoku7610 Was until they put jet fuel in and the fuel pumps failed. Pumps where designed for diesel.

Sadly, it was good engineering that was pushed off the tracks.

Let me tell you something, they found that some diesel engines work more efficiently than this one. They didn't have to use coupling rods as of adding an energy from the wheels to make it go fast. Also, the Type 4, popular diesel engine in the UK could go backwards just as easily as forwards as it didn't have a tender. This GT3 does, it can't go very fast backwards or the tender could cause a derailment
