Will has a Turkey farm in the southeast of England and up until now has had to turn his costly 50kVA generator on to get any electricity. Now however he has installed solar panels on the roof of one of his buildings to provide power from the sun. He is using a Victron Energy solar controller and Quattro inverter charger along with a bank of lithium batteries.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 03:12 ☀️ Will, the turkey farmer, needed an entirely off-grid solar system that could power his farm's welfare building, making it a reliable and cost-effective source of electricity. 04:18 🛠️ Will, with technical support from Energy Monkey, installed the solar system himself, even though unpacking and setting up the equipment was initially daunting. 05:02 🌞 The solar system comprises 20 solar panels, a 10kVA Quattro inverter-charger, and eight 2.4 kilowatt Pylontech Lithium batteries, providing Will with the power he needs. 06:00 🔄 Will plans to reverse the power source, using solar energy to run lights and low-power requirements in the brooding shed and barns, reducing the need for the costly generator. 07:27 🌱 The solar system is expected to bring numerous benefits to Will's farm, including cost savings, reduced noise, and a greener, cleaner energy source for his business's future growth.

The thing that jumps out at me about this video is the fact that prices were quoted for how expensive it would be to get connected to the grid, and I agree they were ridiculous, however NO prices at all were given for the solar system, and that is ignoring that it would have been even higher had he not done the install himself. There is a good reason for that isn't there, my guess would be that the batteries alone are likely to be at least £1200 each and I hate to think the cost of the inverter and control equipment. Solar is a great idea especially as once you have it, in effect the power is free, unfortunately getting the system itself certainly isn't cheap. I would be interested to know (A) how much the system parts were and (B) how long his payback period is even allowing for the high prices currently for grid electricity VS running the generator when required...

Actually, despite the ridiculous cost of grid connection & given the huge amount of leftover rooftop space, not to mention a fair bit of leeway for ground mounted solar arrays, I think it could prove cost effective for him to grid connect anyway as a means of diversification for the farm. Bird flu is becoming increasingly common, not just in domestic flocks but in wild avian populations also. Should he have a particularly bad year with having to cull early due to bird flu, having income from either feed-in tariffs or an off-take agreement with a company such as Octopus, well, it might just save his bacon - or should that be turkey? Once people become accustomed to solar power & battery storage, they tend to want to go full eco geek if possible. 🤓 🤓

so 30k for reliable power 24/7 power. no maintenance no hassle no interruptions . Or about 10k to 20k for solar that will be less reliable, requires huge amounts of maintenance compared to mains power, will lose efficiency over time, and will require replacing after 15 years ish, (a problem with solar tech as a whole). also having LI-ion batteries that will also degrade and require replacing too. A (problem with all Li-ion batteries whether in a phone, a car or in a power storage solution in a home) think i would rather pay the 30k

@MinkieWinkle
@MinkieWinkle 2 жыл бұрын
@@erikslagter3231 the brand of battery is irrelevant. The issue is with lithium ion. The technology on which the batteries are made. Lithium ion degrades. Always has, always will. As will the panels them selves. So much so, that most solar setups, Start require replacement only a few years after they pay them selves off. Typically about a decade. Where as a mains hookup can last 50 to 100 years. Easy. 30k for 100 years. Or paying 10 to 20 k every 10 to 15 years. The 30k option is unbeatable.

They all degrade too quickly. A lifepo4 battery as an example has typically 3000 to 5000 cycles. For a solar setup, it would not be out of the ordinary for a battery to cycle, once a day, or in some rarer cased will cycle more, but let's stick with 1 per day so 365 cycles a year, so a little over 10 years life span.
