Thanks for this lesson, teacher Alex! As usual, you made it as clear as crystal. Now I know when to use "would" or "used to" interchangeably, and when it's only possible to use "used to". For example: "When I visted grandma as a child, I would play with her cats and dogs." / "When I visited gandma as a child, I used to play with her cats and dogs." But I can't replace "used to" with "would" in this sentence: I used to study at Saint Thomas Elementary School until I got to high school.".

@lukersweb In the first sentence is about a condition that have to be met. - IF In the second is about a circumstance under which the action is done. - WHEN

In my understanding, that's correct lukersweb. I read that in grammar book that if you use the word "if" in conditional sentence. The grammar books says, you must use "were" not "was" after the word "if". I used to use "was" when I didn't know that yet. But, after I read that in grammar book, I never use the word "was" anymore.

Thank you sir for this clarification. I would suggest for those who are still confused regarding this issue to concentrate on "past actions" and "past states".

Here we are talking about an imaginative/impossible situation....this is perfectly a correct sentence..."If i was" has a different meaning altogether!!! Example from the Internet: "If I was wrong, I am sorry." -> A case about which the speaker is uncertain. "If I were superman, I would fly above the clouds." -> A case which is impossible. Hope that helps!!!

I have always considered both " if i were " and " if i was" as correct and acceptable. However, often depends on speaker which form to use.

I sometimes hear another usage of "would" that I did not fully grasp. Is it possible that it is also used to talk about the future but from a past perspective? Like, say "Back in 1999 I would become an engineer (in 2000)".
