However, 'Heart of Darkness' does not put into question the evils of colonialism but actually promotes as well as perpetrates notions of otherness and orientalism. You should read what Chinua Achebe and other critics have said about issues of racism in Heart of Darkness'. I think his essay is brilliant. He (Achebe) referred to 'Heart of Darkness' as inappropriate. Conrad purposely used his pen to draw direct antithesis between Europe and Africa, White and Black. Africa is not 'a savage land' but one deeply rooted in culture, tradition and myth, that is African tradition, African culture and African myth. In my opinion the only way Conrad should be discussed or read is behind a post colonial criticism backdrop. The fact that he symbolises darkness through Africa and its people and the way his Western characters seem to regress to a primitive state is worrying and should be for any student of literature.
