I'm so excited to find this series! My Grandma use to make these dogs, but I was little and didn't learn how she did it. Thank you!! I didn't have enough of Grandma's scraps to make small quilts for everyone, but the dogs will double the memory of dear Granny. So grateful for you.

Kate this is a great idea, you are keeping a craft alive by showing everyone how to make this doggie, you've even inspired me to start paper piecing too, have done a hexagon quilt that I made many years ago and gave to my niece, I just love to sew, I do use a sewing machine, but it's nice to just have a project done all by hand, and take with you if your go to any sports games etc. Give it a go people it is fun and you will get addicted to it. Thanks Kate you are a treasure, I love your channel, much blessings to you!

Right! I use my sewing machine too. But, I like having a hand project to take camping. Or to take to our daughter's home to pet sit when they go away on longer trips with her family. Sometimes, when we camp with my husband's cousins, they like to bike for long rides. I prefer to stay at the pop up, with our older basset, and stitch in the shade of the our canopy. It helps to finish half finished cross stitch, basting hexies, or putting them together. And, our dog likes to nap in the shade.

I will watch you do your quilting while I am knitting socks. It was a new years resolution for me to learn how to knit socks and I am on my second pair at the moment. I still remember my granny in front of her cole fire knitting socks, those four needles clicking along. It always looked like magic to me. She told me it was easy, and she taught me lots of things. To knit, crochet and embroider. But what young girl is interested in knitting socks? I wasn't. .......😳 I really can't believe I am starting to understand the formula for making socks, it really is just a formula. Like all the other crafty things we do, once you understand the bones......you got it. Maybe this year I can also expand my efforts on quilting. I've made some false starts, but I've learned a little more about its formula. And there is always youtube. Thank you for teaching us how to make your precious doggy.

Years ago I pieces a queen sized 1" hexagon quilt prior to learning of EPP. I know how how but find it quite labor intensive. It's my movie activity at the moment. The first quilt I pieced while my babies took naps, years ago. I also have a hexagon quilt in bright solids my mother's greatgranny made years & years ago....as mom is 80 now. It was unquilted so I finished it. Hard quilting as it was made from clothing scraps. Not beautiful quilt, but interesting! Thanks for all the videos!

I quilt and call the squares, hexagons etc. I use, which are all the same size, simply patchwork or quilting pieces. All the patchwork items I make be it quilts, pillows, wearable art, are washable. Which is why I prewash all fabric so a completed piece can then be washed with no fear of shrinkage.. Also love my Fiskars Square Acrylic Ruler.

I still have that ball somewhere. I saw some fabric samples at a shop yesterday for €1.50 a piece but never took the time to look and buy. Was too busy with doing things for my sister. @@thelasthomelyhouse makes a great pillow, for an adult, though. And even if the fabric squares are 2 1/2 inches square, one could make the paper squares down to 1 1/4 inches without having seams overlapping on each other. I'd probably stop ot go smaller than the size you used on the indigo dog, though. Just thinking how one could use precuts. Thinking back on the polyester double knit dog someone gave me in grade school, I actually took him to use as a pillow when I rode the train to California, to visit with my cousins, afternoon graduated from high school. That was a 2 day/2 night trip! We all went camping for 2 weeks to Baja, in Mexico, and I took him then, also. Nice compact pillow to pack for trips like that.😊 Airplanes, too, I'm sure.

Many shapes can be used for EPP: Tumbler, Clamshell, others, and of course squares, rectangles, and triangles of all shapes. I may have to make EPP triangle patches to mend the center of a quilt I made 15 yrs ago for our daughter and SIL's wedding gift. It has been well loved, washed many times, and since I have enough spare scraps, still, and retired, I'm happy to be able to give it new life. EPP will make it easier to make patches, because I am Not removing any quilting! It took me a year to make the quilt while working, as it was.😊

I have very little skill or talent for sewing and crafts, but I also have a little too much time on my hands these days. Now that I recently finished a mostly successful crochet project which gave me some confidence, I am wondering if I could use this English paper piecing to make a round pillow. I am envisioning something exactly like your dog, but round instead of dog-shaped, to be used as a decorative throw pillow on my bed. If any of you with skill and talent can tell if that is a reasonable goal (and does not require a sewing machine), I would appreciate it. I look forward to the rest of this mini-series. I am fairly new to this channel, and quite enchanted by it.

I use plastic templates, double stick sticky tape, or a loop of normal sticky tape to hold the papers on them and really sharp scissors. Card paper for photocopier printers is a good weight, cereal boxes etc work too. Meredithe Clark from Matilda's own ruler company, did a video for an aussie quilt mag, ages ago, showing how to not go through the paper sewing the papers in. The tacking stays in, you just flick the papers out and re-use them. A tiny hole in the paper to pick them out with helps.

We fill the bags with little quilts or new clothing. I make little animal dolls to go with my quilts. This is better than any pattern. Ever. Machine sewing is rather a solitary pursuit! I have so many questions for you... but... let me start by asking about your die cutting machine. Can it be purchased in the US? If so, what features do you find important? Do I need to purchase extra accessories? I would like to make 2" hexies... do they have dies for that? Questions, questions ... oh how I would love to actually meet up with you for some lessons! Looking forward to hearing from you! Joanne ;)

You might be able to find hexagons dies on Ebay, Etsy, or other online merchants. Hexagon dies would probably be in a set of different sizes, great for cutting the papers. But with as many as you would need for a project, it would take quite awhile to cut them all with dies. I feel very fortunate to have a ScanNCut electronic diecutter, and can cut out dozens in a rather short time.

Kate, I didn't know anything about this. That this is English Paper Piecing. I almost wasn't going to watch, but, I'm glad that I did. I am going to have to mull this one over. I think I might like to try it. Thank you for sharing. Enjoy the day! Catherine

You can make it in various weights and textures for a fiddle toy for the blind. I made one like that for a blind autistic woman. She was severely autistic and she spent hours stroking and fiddling with the dog. That one was just hand pieced. No papers. The goal was to have different textures. For finger stimulation.

Hello Kate, I've just bingewatched all your videos regarding EPP, I was particularly interested as I'm learning this in a zoom group currently, and LOVING it. Your comments regarding the accuracy needed for precise templates couldn't have been better timed.....because much of the zoom group is chatting , I was only half concentrating on cutting the templates with scissors, so ended up with some being slightly wonky. I didn't realise until I'd made 150 (all with fabric tacked on), so I think my quilt will be slightly wobbly wobbly, but still living the process. I can't bear the thought of instituting them all 🙈. I know now for next time. Thank you so much for your beautiful videos, I listen and watch whilst sewing, it feels like I have a friend/sister/mum rolled into one. Thank you xxx 💝

Somebody gave me a dog pillow just like this, way back in the 60s. It was made from the polyester double knits that were popular back then, so probably made on the machine. I think it was still usuable when our girls were small, but I also think one of our pups thought it was her chew toy.🤫😏

My Grandmother always wore a thimble. When she was teaching me, she tried to teach me how to use one but I have large fingers (man hands) and thimbles do not fit me well so I never mastered the use of that little booger! Miss my Grandmother everyday although she has been gone for 45 years. I do still have her in the skills she taught me.

Hello Kate! I've just gotten a Big Shot Sizzix machine (much because of you thx) and some dies. One set is of what they call "thinlets" much smaller than a Bigz die but I also got 2 bigz dies for hexagons. I want the star next. My question is if I use Liberty fabrics, or any fabric really, for this dog would you suggest using a thin fusible at the last to make it a bit stronger for a toddler? I have chosen a jelly roll in pastels for this dog because my husband likes it best but the baby can have more than one right? I did find a pattern they call it a "flatty dog". It has a mom and dad also 2 baby dogs. Very sweet. Anyway I am just wondering about a thin fusible interfacing for extra strength? Have you ever used it for these dogs or what you feel about it. Thanks so much! Hope you are enjoying yourself. We had snow ❄️😊💕
