Good evening. I am a doctor from Tunisia (Arab country in North Africa). Here, the French is our seconde language and doctors need medical English to present their works in medical meetings but unfortunately we face difficulties especially to pronounce the names of many diseases and microorganisms. I should be grateful if you present in your videos (how to pronounce) the name of some diseases and parasites particularly difficult to pronounce, such as "Leishmaniasis, Hydatidosis, Echinococcus, etc .Thank you in advance.

Please teacher D= I desesperately need minimal pairs like "year" and "ear". I was shocked when told they arent homophonous. Cant tell the difference for my life! Please, help. That video came at the right time.
@francois182
@francois182 2 жыл бұрын
The difference, I think, for "year," is that I believe you need to have your tongue closer to the roof of your mouth and farther forward for the y consonant (as opposed the the long e vowel sound), while having air pass through that very narrow path between the two, before you move your tongue back to make the "ee" sound in the rest of the "year" word. I wanted to know how to show this to students, since they are used to saying the "ee" sound for y, which presents a problem when they have to say "year," since it will sound like "ear," but I'm not sure if this explanation works.

I'm so confused about the way how native speakers pronounce this combination "a consonant/ a vowel + [jən]". For example: * [g] + [jən] in argument [ˈɑːrɡ.jə.mənt], is it pronounced the same as [gju:], meaning that we can pronounce this word [ˈɑːrɡ.ju:.mənt] *[n] + [jən] in onion [ˈʌn.jən] *[ɪl] + [jən] in brilliant [ˈbrɪl.jənt]

Hi Rachel! Greeting from Japan and thank you for your great videos. They help me a lot! Yet I find it really difficult to pronounce Y after N consonant. like the word, California. The last syllable is [njə] and I cannot lift the middle part of the tongue that quick... I would appreciate it if you could give me a tip for that. Anyway thank you always for your great videos !
@rachelsenglish
@rachelsenglish 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Great question! Try making the N sound with more of the tongue lifted in the mouth - that adjustment may make it easier for you to quickly move into the Y consonant sound. Many consonant sounds shift the way the exact tongue position depending on what sound comes next - this is a great example of this!
