Today I drove down to Newmarket, Ontario to try a Fish and Chip restaurant that I've never been to before called Chip+Malt. I'll also try and buy a dessert at a crepe restaurant but I arrive 3 hours too early, so I drive up to Bradford to a Portuguese bakery called Portugalia and buy an assortment of pastries. Let's see what I thought of these Mom and Pop shops?

Ken you had me talking to the tv !!! first off you want peas and not coleslaw with fish and chips... always always COD fish !! Salt and vinegar goes on the CHIPS!! Those are not fries!! Vinegar was legit something we use here in Uk

Cod, Haddock and Plaice are what most sell or say they sell anyway, "fancier" places will also offer seabass, lemon sole, trout and i've even seen Salmon.

As a Brit I was slightly disappointed you didn't get Cod and didn't use vinegar on your chips, but still a good video and good on you for trying! Need to again recommend the frugality challenge. Spend 24 hours eating at different places and trying to get a main + drink (and side if it'll fit) for $5 or $6 (adjustable if that seems too small). We've seen you go super expensive, now let's see how you stretch your dollar at the other end of the spectrum!

They r French fries chips are in a bag at the variety store...were in Canada ...I get the fish and chips thing ..but allot of places will ask if you want mashed baked or fries...so let the chip thing go already

Cod has been overfished. Switched to haddock or pollok fish. The Forks market has an amazing fish & chips joint. The fish is battered in a sweet batter. Delicious meal.

As a retired chef...2 things. Tarter not tartar. Tartar is used in cooking to thicken egg whites. 2nd thing? Ginger with sushi is to also remove the Heat when you get too much wasabi.

Absolutely true. Some places give you lemon when you sit in for fish and chips. Most places are takeaways though and have little or sometimes no seating. Also, vinegar goes on chips as well.

If you ever order "English Fish & Chips" or "English Breakfast/Fry Up" you can pretty much expect a bunch of nitpickers in the comment section explaining why it isn't English enough 😂 As a brit, Halibut is great for fish and chips. It isn't the traditional choice (that would be Cod) but I think Halibut tastes better than Cod personally. It's a big meaty piece of fish too that flakes apart when deep fried, which is perfect for battered fish & chips.

Edit: Found a comment of you blabbing about how he can only have Cod, can't put salt and vinegar on the fish, and needs mushy peas... so yeah... confirmed "expert". You know most of us don't even like mushy peas right? They taste gross. Only old fogeys get that with their food. Bet you call it a "fish supper" too 😂

You don't get a lemon wedge when you go to a fish and chip shop here in the UK, but usually when you go to a pub and have fish and chips you get served a lemon wedge.

I’ve never put malt on my fish....but it’s amazing on fries. I also love tartar sauce in my fries. It’s my preferred dipping sauce for fries....that piece of fish does look amazing

As Brit I would say the following - it’s batter not breading, put the vinegar on the chips and the fish. We get lemon in a restaurant setting rather than in a ‘chippy’. Looks great though Ken. Enjoy

Fish and chips might me my absolute favorite meals and comfort meal (besides Swedish meatballs or meatloaf). It reminds me of having fresh fish and chips in Scotland right by the ocean. The vinegar is a must !

Bona-fide English an here from a costal town in the North West, those fish chips look pretty spot on, you have the proper Sarsons vinegar too, you just need mushy peas and you're set. Never had Halinut and chips before, usually it's Cod or Haddock and we get seasonal local fish here as we're a fishing town so sometimes Plaice. Some places provide a slice of lemon but mostly in sit down places like you have there, when you get them as take away you rarely get lemon, besides that's what vinegar is for, poor man's lemon. Also we call it batter, not breading, breading is what we call breadcrumbs here and that's usually only found on Scampi (prawns) or fishcakes.

Haddock, King of the sea everytime for me. Its fish and chips Ken, not fish and French fries lol. As for lemon, never from a takeaway but almost always in a seated restaurant.

Gal from England here! For the lemon the only time I get given lemon when I have fish and chips is when I go to a restaurant and get it. But from a chippy takeaway or even a sit in chippy they don't give you a lemon, just in restaurants that happen to serve other foods other than fish and chips. (I personally love lemon with my fish and chips, it also squeeze it over my chips because I don't like vinegar, very nice 👌🏻) I am from up North so I can't speak for the South of England but that's what it's like where I am located. Also, the fish selection of places I've been to only do Cod or Haddock and you may find a place that does plaice but then again those are from takeaway chippys not a fancy sit down place.

Its true in the UK you wouldnt get a lemon with fish and chips, probably with fish in a restaurant but not takeaway fish and chips. In Scotland we usually get fish and chips with salt and vinegar and a pickled onion with it.

That fish and chips meal looks amazing. For our friends from th UK suggesting traditional fish and chips is cod and chips with mushy peas: Here in Southern Ontario, where Ken did the video, halibut and chips is pretty much standard, although cod and haddock are popular too. It is usually served with cole slaw and tartar sauce. Mushy peas are hard to find. And yes we love vinegar on our chips. The first time I was in an American restaurant and asked for vinegar for my fries, they looked at me like I was crazy. It is practically unheard of down there. Anyway, to sum up, in Southern Ontario it's halibut and chips with cole slaw and tartar sauce. And yes, a lot of us like ketchup and vinegar on our chips. (please forgive us)

Ken in England you salt and Vinegar the chips you can also put that on the fish that’s personal preference, lemon is normal but from restaurants not from takeaways we call chippies , COD is the common choice of fish with haddock and halibut behind then roe, hope ive been helpful ken and you read this.

Vinegar most certainly should be on the chips and only on the fish by accident. Lemon on fish is absolutely a thing in the UK, not in a chippy but absolutely in a restaurant. Looks very good though - made me hungry.

Newfoundland is the real place for fish and chips. In NL fish means cod, so fish and chips is always cod and chips

About the dessert, the crunchy we call “Mil Folhas”, something like “thousand leafs” in Portuguese, and you should eat with fork, never without it hahaha. The chocolate thing in Brazil call “Carolina”, but doesn’t come with the white cream. All tasty!

Yes we do have lemon with our fish and chips in the UK. Normally in a restaurant though it doesn't come with takeaways. Haddock or cod are the most common types of fish and we have it with mushy peas or curry sauce
