We hope you enjoyed this video, we tried to document the process as much as we could. Sorry we did not cover more interviews at different companies, but we did not end up going for as many as we expected. Since we basically only went to Wallstreet English and
Vinschool.
If you have not seen our other videos documenting our experience of becoming a TESOL certified teacher here in Vietnam, you can check out our playlist here - bit.ly/38YdnbA.
If you have any questions, we can help you with them, Rhett did go for one more interview at Yola, so if you need to know anything about that or Wallstreet English, do not hesitate to comment below and we will provide as much help as we can :)
The ESL series includes topics such as the paperwork required to work in Vietnam, signing up for and attending a TESOL course in Ho Chi Minh City, the day to day experience of being on the course, attending observations and teaching practices, and a summary of our experience and thoughts about the course.
If you think this will interest you, please feel free to subscribe and follow along for the adventure:)
If you are interested in taking the route we did, get in touch with Ninja Teacher here: bit.ly/38YdnbA - Their team have been fantastic in getting us settled in Vietnam and helping with any questions we have.

Hello Rhett and Claire, I'm researching the process of becoming an ESL teacher in Vietnam and came across your videos. Hi Rhett and Claire! I enjoyed your videos very much. Congratulations on your new jobs in Vietnam and wishing you both the best. I grew up in Saigon but moved to the US many many years ago. Thanks to your videos I could see many changes in the city, new look, new high rise buildings, new parks, ect... Thank you for sharing your experience. I feel as if I were there. As for the "cafe sua~" (Vietnamese coffee) that you mentioned, a good "cafe sua~" would have stronger and richer coffee flavor since they brew it in a small individual Vietnamese coffee press. Hope that answered your question. Enjoy your stay in Vietnam.

As far as I know from a coffee barista,most of Vietnamese prefer Robusta rather than Arabica (which is similar to western taste). Robusta is bitter n stronger and it can be done with phin. Arabica, you can make capuchino, espresso, etc. and its taste is lighter. Currently, some coffee shop mix both robusta and arabica, you can ask and see if you request it. Good luck

Based on my experience teaching in Asia. Don’t use a job recruiter (the school needs to pay whoever referred you, hence you receive less) Looks on job forums and contact schools yourself Don’t work for huge training centers (less pay, more work) Everything is negotiable (supply and demand, they need you more than you need them) My current job in China, I was able to get them to increase the pay offer by about $1000/month, agree they pay all utilities, and double my completion bonus. I teach 12.75 hours a week at a kindergarten, free housing, and receive 21k yuan after tax per month. In Asia you get what you negotiate.

Aaron Venema thank you for the great advice! We actually booked our TESOL course through a South African owned agency that helped us throughout the whole process of getting to Vietnam, doing the course and finding jobs. Job recruitment was included in the price we paid them and we have no regrets using the agency because the support was great. We agree with you with regards to not using a job recruitment agency if you’ve already got all qualifications and are able to set yourself up in Vietnam. You’re correct in saying that the large centers pay less for more work, that is why neither of us ended up working at one. The salary offers were terrible. We now teach online where we are paid per hour and have complete control over our own schedules. Well done on getting such a great salary. Do you enjoy teaching in China?
@aaronvenema
@aaronvenema 5 жыл бұрын
Rhett and Claire - I enjoy my school, the kids are great and the school is top notch. Very good balance between work and outside life. But not exactly in love with the city I’m currently in. Pros about China: High salary, free accommodation, less working hours...there’s a huge shortage of foreign teachers so lots of opportunities and room for negotiation. People are generally friendly and hospitable. Cons: Rising tension and nationalism. Restrictive internet. Chinese aren’t good at English. Outside of the major international hub cities, the people aren’t used to seeing foreigners...every 5 seconds somebody will snicker, laugh, point at me, or in Chinese say stuff like ‘foreigner’, ‘too tall’, ‘handsome little brother’. The way they come across can seem very rude to westerners, but they don’t generally mean to be rude, just different cultural norms. My experience living in China has been in cities without a large expat community. And I have noticed when I went to large international cities like Beijing, the problems I experience in the smaller cities mostly disappear. (They are more accustomed to foreigners) I’m thinking about moving to Vietnam (hence why I watched your video), also would teach online if I come. My guess would be from what I’ve researched...work life is better in China, but the lifestyle is better in Vietnam. I might eventually come back to China, but I need a little break for now, and if I come back it’ll be to a larger more international city.
@RhettandClaire
@RhettandClaire 5 жыл бұрын
Aaron Venema we have heard that China pay higher salaries and include more benefits. It may be a bit difficult finding a job in Vietnam that pays the same, includes the same benefits and all for the same workload. Another point to bring up, China is way more developed so you may feel a bit of culture shock when you come here to Vietnam. Just prepare yourself mentally. In terms of locals not being used to Foreigners and coming off as rude, the same thing happens in Vietnam but on in the rural or less-visited areas. As you said, it is just part of their culture to be upfront and straightforward (particularly to larger people or people with darker skin). They are very discriminatory. All in all, I think you will really enjoy Vietnam. The lifestyle, we would think, is better than in China. No restrictions whatsoever. You are free to say and do whatever you’d like. If you’re looking to start teaching online, let us know. We have links to share and we wouldn’t mind helping you through the process 😊. Good luck mate, we wish you the best in all your adventures!

Rhett and Claire - yeah, thanks for the input. I want to leave, but I also enjoy the paychecks haha. I’m planning to come to Vietnam by bicycle. How long did you guys work at the schools before quitting?! I don’t think I’ll experience much of a culture shock, I’ve seen just about everything by now haha. I don’t get phased too easily by things nowadays. I live in the boondocks of China. Outside of major cities China is still very much a 3rd world country. I stayed in Cambodia for a while last year, everything seemed ‘normal’ to me while I was there haha. I’ve lost touch with developed 1st world society. I’m going back to America for a few weeks in August, and expecting that to be a culture shock haha
@RhettandClaire
@RhettandClaire 5 жыл бұрын
Aaron Venema Rhett did 3 days of training at his Language center and quickly realized that the hours that had to be put in were certainly not worth the pay they were offering him, especially because he has a Master’s degree and 7 years experience as a college professor. They were offering peanuts. I, on the other hand, was offered a very good salary at an International school. However, I hated the environment and the kids were a nightmare to teach so I quit after 2 months. Neither of us regret our decisions though now that we’re both teaching online. It’s great working from home and having tons of free time! If you’re used to the local Chinese areas then I’m sure you’ll be just fine here in Vietnam. America will definitely be more of a culture shock 😂. It’ll be like Ying and Yang!

You could add a lot of depth to your channel by spending more effort elaborating on your experiences. For example, describing how the demo class went and what you did, and how you felt about it. You could have provided a lot of information here that would have been extremely valuable to people considering this profession. Also, she could have walked us through what she experienced on her first day teaching her new class rather than just giving us a one word response that really didn’t tell us anything.

@@RhettandClaire great thanks for the heads up. i was thinking of just coming in February, staying during that month to enjoy the festivities and get acclimated to the culture and maybe visit a few cities to get a feel for them. Do you all have any favorite cities you recommend visiting that would be good options to eventually live in? I'm leaning towards Hanoi and Saigon. Da Nang seems beautiful but it sounds like it is a lot harder to find a job
@RhettandClaire
@RhettandClaire 5 жыл бұрын
Michael Danger Dobbs unfortunately, most of the big cities in Vietnam become extremely quiet during the Lunar New Year and are not festive at all. Most people go to their home towns during this time to visit family so everything will be closed for about two weeks. We were in Phu Quoc during that time and it was extremely quiet (apart from many Chinese tourists). The two best places to find work are HCMC or Hanoi. If you’re a nature lover, Hanoi is the better option. Danang is really beautiful, you would be lucky to find a job there. It’s worth a shot though!

I have been back to Vietnam many times for holiday. I have seen how fast Vietnam has been changing and how beautiful and diverse it is. Considering being a small country Vietnam has pretty much all sort of things to offer. It has beaches, mountains, islands, sandy hills which look like desert, world's biggest caves, Deltas, interesting histoty which is as long as thousands years old and very diverse culture, and food.
