In Toronto, like everywhere else in the northern hemisphere, winter is THREE (not five or six) months long, like the other three seasons. Winter starts on the winter solstice on December 22 ends at the spring equinox on March 20. It's true the days are shorter in winter, like everywhere at higher latitudes. The reverse is true in the southeastern hemisphere. The sun sets here at 4:44 pm on December 22. However, that means summer days are quite long, and the sun sets at 8:22 pm on the summer solstice on June 24. Toronto winters are relatively mild compared with the rest of Canada, and they are getting milder. As I child, we would usually have frosts in October or November, but this year, I had plants growing on my balcony until late December. The coldest temperature here this winter was -20.5 C on February 3, 2024. Some people like to take ski vacations in winter, however many do find winter dreary, and it's quite common for people to go somewhere sunny in February or March. Winter is the least favorite season, it's just not as bad as this video portrays, and I suspect people in Dubai complain as much about their hot summers as we do about our winter.

Hey, thanks for sharing some more information about the weather in Toronto. It’s just a personal preference. And while yes in theory winter should be three months, it’s quite cold for more than three months out of the year. I have friends who love cold weather, it’s just not for me. Winter can definitely be beautiful but if given the choice I’d go with a hotter climate. The summers here are super hot but I don’t mind. People usually spend more time indoors and many people travel in the hotter months. For now I love seeing the sun almost every day ☀️☺️.

Toronto has extremely hot and humid summers which often feel like over 40 C with the humidity. More people die every year in Toronto due to the heat and having no air conditioning than in winter. I am always cautious to overplay the Canada=winter stereotype when discussing Toronto and southern Ontario…. Don‘t forget, just south of Toronto is a wine region!

In Toronto most people speak the language of their community as their first language ( chinese, indian...) in daily life . Toronto is a juxtaposition of différent communities which do not share a common culture where English is more a common intercommunity communication tool than people's first language.
@englishetcwithjulie
@englishetcwithjulie 28 күн бұрын
Hey, thanks for sharing your experience. While many people do speak their first language at home, with friends and family, English is spoken at work, at school, universities, in public and at all government establishments. It's not uncommon to hear people speaking different languages when you're walking around Toronto, which is one of the cool things about the city. There are many cultural groups as you said. I think it's quite a beautiful thing that people can preserve and share their own culture in Canada and have the opportunity to continue speaking their first language within their communities and social groups. However, being born and raised in Toronto, I'd say that English is definitely more than just a tool to communicate with other communities. English is necessary for daily life in Toronto.

Hey Julie… there were some interesting insights that I found in your video. Thanks for the honest review. A quick question since you’re born and raised in Toronto please. I’m a teacher in Dubai, but I wanted to know how’s the life of a teacher in Canada in general as compared to Dubai please?
@englishetcwithjulie
@englishetcwithjulie 3 ай бұрын
Hey, I’m glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for question. There are quite a few differences for school teachers in the UAE (specifically Dubai) compared to Canada. Here in Dubai many international schools offer accommodation for single teachers, a tax free salary and other benefits. This attracts many young, single teachers to Dubai. In Canada the cost of living is extremely high right now so benefits like this make a big difference. Another thing about teaching in Canada is that many teachers start off as supply teachers before getting a permanent placement in a school, so there can be a period of instability for new teachers to consider. However, once you get a permanent placement generally the position is quite stable. The curriculums are also quite different. In Canadian public schools, teachers have to cover a lot of social issues that aren’t really part of the curriculums here in Dubai. There are quite a few cultural differences to consider, you’ll definitely see big differences with the parents and students themselves in both places. These are just a few differences, I think there are pros and cons to teaching in different places. Hopefully this at least gives you an idea of a few differences 😉.

Canada can be great for people who have 3rd world passport, to get a 1st world passport, and afterwards, you can go back to Dubai to be treat better with your 1st world passport(Canada)
@englishetcwithjulie
@englishetcwithjulie Ай бұрын
Hey, as you know work in Dubai is impacted by your nationality, industry etc. Many jobs are different in Dubai and Canada in terms of salary, working conditions and the job itself. However in Canada there are clear employment laws which definitely help with equality. I think for everyone, if the place you’re going is better for you than where you came from, then it’s generally a good step. Getting started in Canada isn’t easy, but that’s the case almost everywhere these days. I think with hard work, you can do it. I know that the passport and nationality can help to open doors and I wish you the best of luck!

I am wondering, why people do not their research about weather when moving to Canada. We moved from Belarus to Toronto and for us the weather just perfect. As we used to similar one in Belarus. And I do love fall here. But all my Indian friends are complaining about the weather when moved from India. Of course, it’s a huge change. Then why to move?? Or if there are other reasons for moving, buy an appropriate cloth and get peace with the weather 😊

The type of tax you pay and the requirement to file an income tax return depend on the type of income you receive. Generally, Canadian income received by a non-resident is subject to Part XIII tax or Part I tax.” www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/international-non-residents/individuals-leaving-entering-canada-non-residents/non-residents-canada.html# Hope this helps!
