Lord and Lady Braybrooke are taking a trip to their London townhouse so it's a good opportunity for Mrs Crocombe to ensure her kitchen is in order. There's washing, cleaning and polishing to be done. Everything must be suitably prepared for when the family and staff return to Audley End House.
English Heritage is a charity that cares for over 400 historic buildings, monuments and sites. Find out how you can support our work here: bit.ly/38Cv9lA

When I was a kid, I used to clean our copper bottom pots with copper cleaner. My mom quit having me do that after I developed a horrible rash on my arm that wouldn't go away. Whatever's in that stuff, it's nasty. Points for Mrs. Crocombe.

Honestly, I think she'd appreciate the help, at least for washing the everyday ceramics and cutlery. "To avoid stains, it is vital that you dry off residue water. And I will NOT suffer you putting the fine china, the crystalware or the silver into the dishwasher." But yeah, my mom is the same. Tried to convince me that I don't need one, since I live alone. ... I pointed to both the fact that I own a washing mashine (remember Mrs Warrick's horror at these?) AND that I have a pathological disgust for dishwashing.

it's crazy how fast our image of cookware has changed. When i was a kid people couldnt give away their "old fashioned" copper and cast iron cookware because everyone wanted modern easy to clean teflon coated everything. I remembered once going to a garage sale and trying to get my dad to buy a box of cookware that included some copper gadgets like these, copper pans, and copper pots for like 40 or 50 bucks and he said "we dont need that old garbage". Now that same stuff is probably being sold in trendy hipster stores for ten times that.

It's like this channel is reading my mind! Mrs. Crocombe inspired me to ask for a set of copper bowls (I've made the fluffiest quiches ever with their help), and while I've been fairly diligent, they needed polishing. I had copper cleaner on my shopping list, but I tried the lemon and salt method and they look brand new! Scratch a nasty chemical compound off the list!

Growing up my Nonna had beautiful silver. I LOVED polishing silverware with her. I also really enjoyed taking out all of her crystal from China cabinet and polishing and washing the wine glasses, special platters and things. We would do it every few weeks. I loved hearing the stories behind all of the items she was so proud of.
