A few people have asked why we can’t use powder inside our historic properties. This is an excellent question. Powder particles are extremely small and travel considerable distances without being seen. They can bond to or abrade the surfaces of our collections and cause lasting damage. For the same reasons, we don’t permit hairspray or any aerosols at all to be used in our properties. As a conservation charity, we do everything in our power to prevent and manage the deterioration of our fantastic collections and delicate interiors. Find out more about how we conserve and maintain the historic places in our care: bit.ly/2Wspsni

I love the idea, that Queen Victoria collected ‚antique lace‘. So even back then, people were into ‚vintage‘ 😀
@keepcalmyouexist358
@keepcalmyouexist358 5 жыл бұрын
I remember reading a book on 17th century China where an aristocrat was quoted as rejecting any porcelain produced after the 15th century as crude. Only 14th century and before antiques were acceptable if you really wanted to be an tasteful person of means. Victoria's 'antique' lace was probably *from* the 17th century. We always think the past is cooler :D
@clod8

KeepCalm YouExist Often it’s true because things have gotten progressively more mass produced and made from cheaper products.
@keepcalmyouexist358
@keepcalmyouexist358 5 жыл бұрын
@@clod8 That's often true. But, even if the quality of many mass produced products is lower than it used to be, it means that most people can afford them now, which is an improvement to the bare homes and two sets of clothing that many had in the past. On the other hand, modern engineering helps develop better products (more ergonomic, with better engineering qualities, more hygenic), and that would probably not been possible without mass production, due to lack of funds for research.
@clod8
@clod8 5 жыл бұрын
KeepCalm YouExist All true and great points. My main issue is with all the throw away products we have now. All the junk products destroying beautiful forests and oceans. Better to have solid but simple things that last decades or hundreds of years rather than a few weeks or months. I make my own makeup and don’t need more things. My skin looks like a 20 year old even though I’m almost 50.

The reason for that is due to the extreme poverty of commoners during that period. Meaning starvation is the norm.(Potato plight anyone, corn law) If you seen those women in developing countries that are malnourish, and realise thats the norm in Victorian era. You will realise the reason for the title. Besides “Plump” in those era would be like Kim Kardashian plump.

In the last clips of the model as a young Queen Victoria, I just love how her whole demeanor, especially her facial expression, changes as she goes from just plain, modern street clothes to the nostalgic elegance of the costume. She looks radiant! It just goes to show that there is truth in (and I can relate) the concept of "looking better to feel better". There's just something that happens to your emotional state, posture, facial expressions and simply how you carry yourself when you put on a bit of makeup, do your hair and put on your best dress. I would dress like this all the time if it was socially acceptable to walk out of the house in a big dress and a tiara on my head!

@@J_Kwan Yes, I wear long skirts most days. However, most don't tend to really blend well with fascinators (hats), gloved hands, top hats/ bowler hats for men, dressy hats for women, polished shoes with buckles, full period wear from 150 years ago or much social etiquette from the past. If we did dress this way daily, there would be an element of exclusion for many people within their social circles.

Queen Victoria has always been one of my favorite queens from England, she is the definition of simple beauty and even if she didn’t like being pregnant, she did care for her children. Her wedding was also really nice along with her relationship with Albert Edit: Hollie was the perfect model for Queen Victoria, it was looking one of her portraits. Excellent work 😊

I love this series and can't wait for more! I love the series 'A Stitch In Time' with Amber Butchart and have now been introduced to the lovely Rebecca Butterworth! I hope to next see something with Queen Mary of Teck or with her mother-in-law, maybe even something that includes the Queen Mother around the time that her husband would have become king or even around the time when he died. I would also love to see the many layers that are apart of the historical costume; I loved that in this episode we were able to see some of Queen Victoria's actual clothing! Maybe there could even be an episode about how Queen Victoria or another monarch would have dressed and done their makeup during a time of morning.

The model certainly looks as though she were Queen Victoria incarnated if I believed in this. Especially with the lovely gown and hair with flowers and light makeup. Just perfectly made her look like picture on the wall, but much younger. She even loved fresh flowers and the gardens. The make up artist, is so knowledgeable and does a lovely job. The history given is perfect and really do feel this deserves a high score for all it features and teaches. Covers so much in one blog.

I read that American tourist Nathaniel Parker Willis saw the teenage Princess Victoria at the Ascot races, and wrote that she was "unnecessarily pretty and interesting" for someone destined for an arranged political marriage. As an American, he had no reason to flatter Victoria. We tend to have a negative view of Victoria's look because by the time photography was sufficiently advanced to take reliable pictures Victoria was in her forties, and her looks had been worn down by too many pregnancies in a short time. Her first seven children were born in an eight year time span.

actually Victoria was lovely as a very young woman, perhaps closer looking to the actress in the recent Lucy Worsley Victoria wedding special, but still lovely with big blue eyes, and a tiny waist.

@@astrinymris9953 I think the earliest photo of her is from about 1846 - she'd have been around twenty-seven then. It's obviously not the best picture, because photography was literally in its baby form at the time, but it's pretty clear that based on that photo she would be considered pretty at that age :)
