I got 100%. But like many of you have replied, I was taught proper English when I went to school. They drilled this stuff into us. One pet peeve that I do have though is people in upper management positions who CAN'T speak proper English. I would think with the amount of schooling some of these folks take that somewhere along the line they would have been taught how to speak properly. I don't have much respect for a supervisor when I can speak better than they do.

You are fortunate. I had Maleficent for four years. My primary school years. My father took us to the United States. The teachers here made a great effort to teach me American English. I was skilled in that language after one year. After two years, I was as proficient as my peers. A teacher can be psycho. There was mutual animosity between me and that teacher. I went to school in the 60s. For the past 10 years I have taught Latin at the college level. Students are not learning this, and many have an appalling lack of knowledge about the past tense and past participle-- in English. One student was on his way to an M.A. in English. After a few days he came up to me and was furious that no one-- not grade school, not high school, nor the professors of English had EVER mentioned parts of speech,, grammatical uses of parts of speech,, or principal parts of verbs. I told him was the victim of educational fraud.

What has happened to breaking down a sentence, every word has it's own story, people just are not taught this any more. Did a little experiment at work. I work at the Shaw Festival Theatre, big outfit, 5 stages, 500 employees from housekeeper's to actors. I could not find anyone that knew that a "forward slash" is actually an oblique sign. Of course I didn't speak to everyone, but I'm a bit of an extravert and have worked there for 15 years, love to talk. I interviewed tons of people. I was really surprised that I never found one that remembered this from English class. I'm 69 years old. Even started to doubt myself and looked it up to be sure! LOL!!

This is a good, challenging test for non-native speakers. Frankly, this isn't taught enough to native speakers. I taught English composition for 12 years in Cambodia and we always began with the parts of speech. They are the building blocks of writing. Writing becomes easier once you understand the parts of speech and their function in forming sentences. You then learn sentence structure and after that move on to single and multiple paragraphs. I'd encourage any non-native speakers to spend time learning and identifying the parts of speech. [I got 100%, so I'm guessing I learned something myself while teaching!].

Hi Anne. I'm 70 and people of my generation were also taught grammar. If we turned in an assignment with spelling or grammar errors, we lost marks. The questions that form this "test" remind me of what we learned as part of Grade 3 grammar. I cringe when I hear words used incorrectly, split infinitives, the use of "good" instead of "well" and the ultimate betrayal of the English language, "your" instead of "you're.". I guess my age is showing. I'm in Canada and the education system here is far from perfect. From what I understand, children in elementary school are not being taught penmanship. This is appalling! Those are my complaints for now. COVID has made me crankier than usual!
@altitudeiseverything3163
@altitudeiseverything3163 3 жыл бұрын
@@lovesmusic36 LOL, COVID has made most of us cranky! Hang in there! Scary times, especially for those of us who are older. In all fairness, the only practical use for cursive now is as a skill necessary for reading older writings. Sadly, “penmanship” has become superfluous. But, I also cringe at how bad grammar is so pervasive today. One of my pet peeves is the use of the adjective ‘everyday’, not as an adjective, but where ‘every day’ is really what is meant. Language always changes over time, but this feels more like a disintegration!
@lovesmusic36
@lovesmusic36 3 жыл бұрын
@@altitudeiseverything3163 Cursive is necessary, I believe, if only to be able to sign your name. I use cursive "every day!" Sorry, I had to work that in! I make lists and notes. I don't think I'd want to print by hand everything when I need to put pen to paper. I also write children's picture books, essays, song lyrics and poetry. Occasionally I prefer to do that by hand rather than on the computer. Again, having to print rather than use cursive writing would be very time consuming. Another irritating grammatical error is when I hear radio personalities reporting traffic and use "alternate route" when it should be "alternative." Social media and texting (the most irritating form of communication) have destroyed the English language. I think I should stop here. I'm aggravating myself! Stay well. Best regards from Canada!

I love this cuz Spanish and English are very similar each other... I know that there are a few and certain difference between their grammar and pronunciation as well, obviously. Whereas I am learning a little bit of both I can understand some one by and through the other one..i mean: preposition, ing & subj modo etc....ambos idiomas son una locura muy completos muy eficaces claro inglés tiene ese montón de colores en la pronunciación que por eso me encanta luego español es súper rápido para expresar lo que sea

I got all correct. Actually, we were taught very good English in school by our English teacher Mr. Daniel. After teaching us English to an advanced level, he told us to go by the sound of a sentence.
