As an almost native speaker of British English (Scottish Gaelic is my mother tongue) I always begin a request of this kind with “Please may I have……”. I have found through experience when ordering goods or services that the “Please may I” opening with a smile is best and generally very well received by people providing the service I want. Its pleasant, courteous and polite all in one. I definitely recommend it.

This reminds me indeed of a cartoon joke depicting the difference between American asking for a help and an Englishman doing the same thing. The first one just chillout help from the water while a man that passes by peace attention to him. The letter doesn’t shout inappropriately but asks in this manner:sorry for bothering you, would you be so kind as to help me if it’s not too much trouble for you, sir of course etc. The man on the shore upon hearing such polite words saves him by offering him a life belt.

Hi Lucy. I didn't even understand your Starbucks order. 🙂 Perhaps because I bought a Starbucks coffee once. Just once. My reaction to that experience is clearly shared by many Australians because we have a very strong coffee culture, albeit a relatively short one. For that, at least in Melbourne, I am grateful to the arrival of Italian and Greek immigrants in the late 40's and 50's. I remember visiting Lygon Street in Carlton in the early 60's where we discovered the joys of European style espresso machines. These days, almost everyone I know has some sort of coffee machine at home, ranging from the entry level pod machines to more sophisticated cappuccino style machines. I've watched a few of your videos and love listening to your mellifluous voice.

I was the kind of barista who really enjoyed customers like level 6, because it made me feel like they really appreciate my job. Level 7 was a bit too much, manily because I wasn't able to control what the cups/mugs were made of and wether they were constructed for a specific hand . Other than that I didn't like 'Can I get a coffee?' customers because it required me to ask more questions because when I didn't they'd complain they'd wanted a Cappuccino and not a black coffee. ASK FOR A EFING CAPPUCCINO THEN! BE SPECIFIC WITH YOUR ORDER 😅 I loved this episode so much, thank you for that. Sending love from the Czech Republic ❤

I'm about to leave for my late lunch and I'll try to order my americano, brewed at precisely 89degrees Celsius, with a subtle yet discernible sprinkling of hand-ground cinnamon served in a fancy, extraordinary ceramic mug, with an ergonomical handle designed for a right handed individuals. I'm really curious about the coffe shop owner's reaction ;)) Thanks for your lessons Lucy. Sometimes I'm struggling with my "square", simple, high school learned english and I found your lessons very helpful. Keep up the good work !

The easiest way to order coffee is by saying "Hi, I would like a black coffee". It's fascinating to learn the new vocabulary from this video though. Thank you, Lucy.

As the level goes up, it gets more and more posh, patronisingly polite, over the top to the point of comedic, in a very British way, right? I can imagine someone like Hugh Grant says in a comedy film

So british! It was like listening to an artistic script!! The server would ask you "What kind of milk would you like?" after the fabulous order. In west coast of North America I am always asked about kind of milk, so I need to say "REGULAR milk"

I really enjoy the concept of progressing difficulty levels in ordering coffee on this video. It's a fantastic way to enhance language skills. However, I would suggest maintaining consistency in the context throughout each level. Introducing details like brewing methods, cup materials, and extra ingredients, while interesting, might deviate from the primary focus. Keeping the scenarios comparable would make it easier for learners to grasp language progression effectively. Looking forward to more great content!

Really cool. After ordering the coffee I can directly order lunch since it takes so much time 😊
