Giulia Marsili (University of Bologna)
"Engraved identities. Epigraphic marks on stone as evidence of stonecutters' workshops across the late antique Mediterranean"
Giulia Marsili is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Bologna. She is also a research fellow at the Gerda Henkel Foundation with the project “Insular Episcopates. Church, Maritime Environment, and Economic Life in the Eastern Aegean Islands (AD 300 - 800 ca.)”. She held her PhD at the University of Bologna in 2014 and published her PhD research in the monograph “Archeologia del cantiere protobizantino. Cave, maestranze e committenti attraverso I marchi dei marmorari” (Prix Gustave Schlumberger, Académie des Belles Lettres, 2021). She participates in national and international research projects. Among them, she is a member of the archaeological missions of the University of Bologna in Crete (Mitropolis cathedral), Kos (St. Stephen basilica) and Sicily (Piazza Armerina, Chiaramonte Gulfi) and former technical coordinator of the EU funded project “BYZART. Byzantine Art and Archaeology on Europeana” (CEF, Action Code 2016-EU-IA- 0094). Her research interests focus on Byzantine architecture, epigraphy and archaeology of Byzantine building sites, digital cultural heritage.
