Professional Luthiers and musical instrument makers around the world use mother of pearl to create beautiful custom inlays that give their instruments distintive and traditional appearances. In this film highly skilled Vietnamese artisans and master craftsmen engrave the pearl by hand and create highly detailed inlays for fine musical instruments. You will see the family of artisans manufacture and use simple hand-made tools following age old traditions to create products shipped around the world. These shell by-products are from species that are harvested under stringent environmental protection laws to create a sustainable fishery and conform to all endangered species laws.

I have an uncle who does this back home and its not a sweat shop people. This is how the artisans live and work. In parts of Asia, some people work from home with their families on the floor. What needs to be admired is their skill not the relative conditions. These people don't complain and they take a lot of pride in in their work. They don't need pity. Focus on that, lest they read these comments and feel they live anything lesser than an inspired life. They are artists and that is their studio. Which looks decent as they have nice floors and probably electric AC...some people back home don't even have that.

My Thai wife's grandmother would make silk patterns on her loom under a pole and metal roof structure. Poor people working out in the middle of no where but happier than many people that I know.

It's easy for many westerners to complain from their cushy seats, only viewing the rest of the world through their own biased lens. I appreciate your comment here, as it needs said. As I'm sure is the case with these people, studies have shown that people doing this kind of work wouldn't take a cut in their pay in trade of more "comfortable" working conditions. They sometimes don't have the resources we take for granted, and complaining from afar won't change that. This is how these people will proudly improve their lives and the lives of their families. It's degrading and patronizing to shout them down with misguided "virtues". It makes me sick.

as a tattoo artist i saw immediately the saving in time and labor that could be achieved with the use of carbon paper to create a stencil to apply to the shell rather than the time consuming process of drawing up each design freehand, the downside to that idea of course is regularity and consistency, done in this manner each is unique. and the upside to that idea is of course regularity and consistency, there is no room for error.

Cap'n Bluebeard : Each one of this pieces is an unique work of art and that's the whole point of it! Using more modern techniques as stencil would just serve to massify the product and take away its real beauty, its worth and its soul!

Very relaxing video. I truly admire this skill. It looks like what he is carving is a "Feagle", a combination fish and eagle. There is hardly any information about the origin of this creature. I have only ever seen it on very old banjos..Vegas, and Fairbanks. These are extremely talented individuals doing this work!! That you for posting this.

just came across this demo by accident and stayed to watch. Very dissapointed in the negative comments. What is wrong with people? the workers look healthy and clean, and they are use to sitting on the ground,we have a different culture but please respect other people for theirs. A lot of people asking about tools and what is used, perhaps to bring in extra money for you all why dont you make and sell them? other people do,just need a simple website with simple features, good luck and God Bless you all. Simply amazing! Very beautiful! Thanks for sharing this video! The chinese people is widely known for its skills and craftsmanship in so many arts that I think it's a shame and almost criminal that nowadays most of the chinese factories ONLY manufacture cheap products with low quality materials in massive quantities just to export them to the west and the rest of the world at small prices! They should invest in manufacturing their historical known products using the traditional ways of their ancestors: the old chinese pieces are real works of art!

I'M A PROFESSIONAL TATTOOER, GUITAR BUILDER AND AM JUST NOW GETTING INTO DETAILED INLAY WORK. THE PEOPLE IN THIS VIDEO ARE AMAZING ATRIST THE WAY THEY EASILY MANIPULATE THE SHELL AND BLADES AND MAKE IT LOOK SO EFFORTLESS IS VERTY IMPRESSIVE. ANYONE WHO HAS TRIED THIS KNOW HOW CHALLENGING THIS ART IS BUT I LEARNED SOME VERTY COOL TECHNIQUES HERE, FOR STARTERS THERE BENCH PIN CONFIGURATION IS SO MUCH SMARTER THAN THE WAY MOST PEOPLE INCLUDING MYSELF DO IT. LAYING THE PEICE ON IT'S SIDE AND SUPPORTING THE BLADE ON A WEDGE SHAPED PIN MAKES WAY MORE SENCE, YOUR LINE OF SIGHT IS CLEAR AND BLADE BREAKAGE WILL BE REDUCED BIG TIME BECAUSE YOU AREN'T TWISTING IT BLINDLY. AMAZING AND Y'ALL BETTER BELIEVE I'LL BE PURCHASING MASS QUANTITIES OF SHELL FROM THESE AMAZING FOLKS.

I like the way nothing is wasted. Even the engraving tool has been brazed on, so it can be replaced with a sharpened one...after one can't use the old one any more. In the west we throw too much stuff away! I would love to try this! What is the black used to fill in the etching to show the lines...a crayon of some kind?

Is this why none of the engraving from Asia looks anything like the vintage engraving? Their lines all have the same value of line. It looks like they don’t actually use traditional hand graver tools and the vintage inlays were done after inlayed into the wood and sanded flush. Also the original engraving included multi line engraving.

This is very cool. Cannot help ask the obvious questions, is the labor being treated well? a honest well compensated place to work as true craftsmen, OR, is this a mandatory place to work at a quota based sweat shop? If this a nice legitimate place to work, kudos for them, but for pete's sake get them a desk and a comfortable place to sit. Just watching them sit on these tiny lil benches is making me hurt down there...

hallo, im a goldsmith student from Belgium who is trying to learn how to carve mother of pearl. what tools do you need to carve mother of pearl? I want to carve a cloud out of it wich means it will be a quite thick peace of mother of pearl so I would need to carve grooves into it to give it a "3d" effect. I was thinking I would need diamond burs but I feel like it might be to rough? I dont know tho. So if you please could suggest me what kind of burs i would need in order to carve it. A push to the right direction would be major help and i would really appreciate it

They are using simple jeweler's saws probably with 06 saw blades. The knives are xactos. The pointed tip pens are scribes. All available on Rio Grande. The black stuff looks to be a black oil paint stick available on Amazon. All simple and very cheap tools. The jerk employing them should invest in some ventilation and some masks. Shell is extremely toxic to breathe.

Solasta - Their studio is clearly open air with a lot of windows, which I know isn't ideal but they aren't locked in a box-like room like we do in the West. Across Asia, many people work in conditions Westerners wouldn't accept because of our very strict health and safety laws. Its highly unlikely that these workers are being 'forced' to work in bad conditions, more that this is just how things are done there. If you actually visit these places, you know that working in this way is very normal - no sense in picking on this one place in their video
