Thanks for the lessons. In Europe when you need to use the bathroom at a friend or relative's house you ask if you can "wash your hands". When I first came to the US and used the expression I was shown the kitchen sink. :)

You're gonna mislead people, because it's not eveywhere in Europe. In France we just say Toilet, and it's not rude. :)

"Fat" can also be softened to "heavy-set" or "heavy". Sometimes people will say someone is "big-boned", which is another nice way of saying they're fat. For women sometimes you can say she's "curvy". But I think a shift is happening in US culture; people are trying to get away from "fat" being a bad word, because it really isn't. Just like calling someone "tall", "fat" is simply a descriptor. But until it's fully accepted, I would recommend using a euphemism for fat :) "Used" can also be "pre-owned" or "secondhand". For "pregnant" you can also say "she's expecting." But it's also important to note that it's rude to assume a woman is pregnant, and you should never NEVER ask her "when are you due?" or "are you pregnant?" (or any other variation). You should always wait for her to tell you first. It's very rude to ask a woman if she is pregnant just because her stomach is big - it could just be that she has gained weight and it is extremely embarrassing to her if you call her pregnant when she isn't.

better to save "Curvy" for busty women with a big bubble butt , It sounds very meaningless to call a woman with big saggy boobs and fat around hips a curvy woman.
@PaulGu
@PaulGu 5 жыл бұрын
I beg to differ. I know "curvy women" refers to the ladies with an hourglass figure. E.g: Wow, the nice lady has a small waist; she has a curvy figure.

Just a word of caution about "bun in the oven" and knocked up." BOTH are considered slang expressions in English, and should therefore be avoided in polite, formal, and most standard conversations. The reason that "pregnant" itself is avoided is partly that it is seen as too direct; Americans in particular have a problem with words that even hint at sex or other bodily functions -- believe me, it's a cultural thing -- and they therefore try to avoid them whenever possible. So the better choice is to say that someone is "expecting," unless the person who is expecting indicates by her own usage that she prefers "pregnant." Also, the reason that "used" fell out of favor (especially with regard to cars) is that it carries a negative meaning of "there's something wrong with it, which is why the previous owner got (or wants to get) rid of it." So you'll often hear "previously owned" (or, more commonly, "pre-owned") instead of "used."

In regards to a woman being pregnant we usually say "She's expecting" that's the polite way instead of she's pregnant. The other you mentioned "knocked up" that is slang normally is reserved for girls that are sluts or whores. Especially if she has multiple children from different fathers.

Hello Adam... Very clear and useful video. When Latin speakers start to speak English, frequently they choose direct expressions and this sounds so rude. To avoid these situations, one solution is to know some euphemisms... For example, I don't want pass away yet!
