In this lesson I will explain a little about how the UK political system works, and introduce you to some of the vocabulary. You'll learn about the major parties, local councils, constituencies, and more. So, welcome to the unpredictable world of UK politics! This is a great lesson to help you understand the news, even if you don't live in the UK. Listening to British news is a great way to practise your English, and understanding what they are talking about will really help! When I made this video in early 2017, I thought that the next UK General Election would not happen until 2020 -- how wrong I was! So here is the video, just a few days ahead of a surprise General Election in June 2017.

I’m so thankful for this, I’m sixteen so I will be able to vote in two years, but schools seem to forget that we need to learn politics. Most people my age have no clue on politics. This should be shown in all schools!

TheRenaissanceman65 thank you for taking the time to do that! I wrote the comment a year ago so I’m now settled in what party I will vote for, and their manifestos. I took most of the year to study up on politics, but I do believe it should be taught in schools so more young people feel educated enough to vote. But thank you! Whenever someone asks me what they should learn I will send them this bc you said it in such an easy way to understand

Right! I'm always hesitant learning about politics because sometimes it's hard to identify if a source is neutral or not(even slightly, some people use biased words or phrasing). Even if they're supporting the views I do, I still don't want someone else influencing my views, just informing.

@NickSBailey

Mostly good though a little bias did creep in. It's true the conservatives are struggling to get policies through but it's largely down to divisions in their own party and not so much their small majority and other parties scuppering them. Also, Labour currently campaign from a platform highlighting the increasing wealth gap and that certainly isn't old-fashioned and is very much a current issue. None of this is the teacher's fault she did very well to keep bias out this is down to available information.

This is so nice, it's presented with a heart felt innocence with the intent of galvanising interest in an institution that is not unfairly being deluged with a torrent of cynicism. This introduction shields the listener from the darker side where reality eventually brings a greater education.

Very informative. Slight right lean I would say. Illustrates how the right will try to keep divisions because it is easier to control. Labor unions (parties) represent the opposition. There are typically more of the lower class than the upper (middle class is eroding), so they keep the lower class arguing amongst themselves

There are certain topics that for us who make use of English as a 2nd language can be rather confusing. Those are the context use of bind/bide/abide/bound/be bound and the verbs to lie and to lay. @engvidGill
@engvidGill 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Carlos -- the election system is sometimes called 'first past the post', like in a horse race -- the candidate with the highest number of votes wins the seat. In any constituency there will be thousands of people voting, but it's the highest number of votes that makes the difference. Small parties need to become big parties in order to survive, because they need to have enough members to support them, and enough candidates to stand in elections all over the country, and they have to attract enough votes to win seats. It must be like trying to climb a mountain :-)

Unless you've studied it, you only ever really hear about parliament in general over here (at least in my experience), but I think understanding at least a little more than just the general concept is better for understanding a lot of things in the UK as a whole and specific countries, so here I am.
