This is a review of an Engwe Fat Bike that I picked up as part of my Tax Free Bike to Work scheme. A quite remarkable product and easily the best bike I've ridden to date. The performance is unreal, you can accelerate so fast and easily maintain 25mph average speed. It has been extremely well designed and packs a lot of technology and performance for comparatively little cost.

Along the graph labelled "Shill" to "Shiz" this vid feels like the shilliest of shills- even further on the left of the graph than GCN (Not over toward the right with the Peak Toque stuff of your normal vids. :( ) As others have pointed out (and I'm sure you knew full well) this is an illegal bike to ride on UK roads, but it won't have EN certification/compliance/testing for basic safety either. I find this really jarring given your regular content being about holding others to account against industry standards. In the grand scheme of things an out of tolerance of a BB against the SKF fitment book is one thing, but something like this has a whole level more consequences should that janky folding stem snap going over a pothole at 30mph +.

To be a road legal ebike in UK it needs to be limited to 15.5 mph, max 250w motor and no throttle (pedal assist only). This bike in the eyes of the law would be a moped so needs a license to ride, insurance, registration and motorcycle helmet.

Funny how you are concerned about street legality, licenses, insurance and registration in this case when he is riding this thing on a shared use path which are provided exclusively for non-motorised traffic - bicycles and pedestrians. People in cars don't care because they are protected by metal cages and airbags. Imagine you are on a Sunday walk with your wife, little kids and a dog, and this guy passes you going 30mph just a couple inches away. Sadly no-one enforces the traffic law anymore so he will be enjoying himself until somebody gets killed.

You are aware that by law e-bikes are limited to 15.5 mph maximum speed? On a shared use path the use of such a fast vehicle is antisocial. And on the road, it needs to be taxed and insured as a motor vehicle. It is, in effect, an electric motorbike. So it is actually illegal to use in the UK, except on private land.

Truly disappointed in this review. Anything else and you would point out the hard to locate key and its vulnerability. You would be talking about the unnecessarily heavy, dull and buzzy straight gauge and square tubing. I cannot believe you aren't aware that fork was designed for off road control, at which it failed in The 90's. It is not designed for on road comfort (that and safety are why they have locked outs). It will be trash in no time. Why carry around all that extra weight for something you will almost never use? How many are going to ride this off road, especially as part of the bike to work scheme? Fat tires on pavement just don't make sense. Not only noisey and battery consuming, but they send numbing vibrations up through the awful frane. They dive in stopping, squirm in turning and get truly dicey when both happen at once. Yes, being small diameter does help with the tsll and soft sidewalls, but the suspension fork, if set light enough to absorb surface imperfections, actually multiplies these problems. The thing is heavy. It is easier to put even a pig like a Rad or Himiway on a tray rack than fold this to put in your trunk! It's two saving graces are that rack and those mag wheels (do people ever think what is going to happen when their hub motored bikes get a damaged wheel?).

My understanding is that If the throttle option is fitted, it ceases to become a peddle assist vehicle, and becomes a motorcycle for UK epac law. I think the motor power also changes use class. I know that in London, some councils blitzed the courier economy, and removed lots of overpowered and throttle enabled bikes, so may be worth clarifying?

I'm pretty certain it's not classed as a moped, rather a non-type approved E-bike. I saw an option to limit the speed in the menu options. Guessing 15.5 mph is an option. Can see how you’d be able to electrically disconnect the throttle and convert it to pedal assist only. Also limiting an electric motor power to 250W seems relatively easily doable, but are these options available in the software in order to make it U.K. legal for road, bike path legal? Obviously you could then do what you wanted on private land. Also is 250W enough for a bike that fat?

In British Columbia they'd have to be registered and insured as motor vehicles due to the wattage (max 500/32km/h). And you can't, by law, drive a motor vehicle on a multi-use trail, so these are basically 1000% illegal. Still, there are thousands of them around. Old people whipping down a crowded trail at 50km/h is... not great.

Above that, and up to 45Km/h, you need motorcycle helmet, you cannot drive them if you are younger than 14, you need a basic driving license (if you are 14 to 17, if you are 18 or above it's not required), license plate and insurance. "Designed in California" (including a State of California flag decal on the seattube) used to be a real thing for most MTBs back in the day. Today it means visiting the vendor's website and "designing" by pulling down several options menus until you end up with the bike spec that you want. Select MOQ, add payment, and you're set. Which is what I think has been done here. Here in the States there are literally tons of choices for the consumer to make, it's really crazy. Your bike looks decent enough and must be good if it passes muster with you. Just hope you can replace the OEM fish oil in the forks and rear shock with something decent when the time comes. Ditto for the tires; there's one e-bike company over here that has its own unique spec 24" tire that's only available through themselves - and just recently they issued a recall because of complaints of premature wear and tire failure. Factory replacements are supposedly not available for another month, which is a problem for the users. So that's something to take into account: are the tires regular rubber or are they some PITA that's going to leave you hanging from a wet rope for three months when replacements are needed. Otherwise, thanks for the great video.

I’m sitting in that market of “designed in California” so what’s the name of the company?
@RReese08
@RReese08 Жыл бұрын
@@basedgodstrugglin It depends on your product and the vendor you're working with. The small bicycle company I once worked for for several years, my boss and I figured out the basic details then traded emails with our partners in Taiwan or Chinda (depending on the product) with the specs and MOQ to get quotes. After that, more emails back and forth, drawings or pictures of the product to verify what it's going to look like, packaging, etc. Most the time we didn't even need a physical sample - but if you want one, add that to your costs. Thing is, when speccing a product, be sure of what you want or DON'T want, because it will - or will not - end up in the final. (Funny story: Our Taiwan partner supplied one part that had a number on it for years - just a random number. People asked what that number meant. We eventually asked our guy about it and he said it was a number they saw on one of the drawings we confirmed - a part number somebody wrote in, I think - so they put that on. Look up the classic story about the lawnmowers made with broken handles) Once everybody's happy on both ends, send in your PO and wire transfer, and prepare to wait. Good vendors also have shipping agents who will book freight and handle customs for you; but if they can't, be prepared for lots more work that you have to do yourself. Then sit back for a few months and pray your container doesn't get knocked off the ship in a storm, the container doesn't get held up in customs at the port, and the truck driver doesn't get lost trying to find your place. And nothing's more fun than unloading a 40-footer by hand in the middle of summer - welcome to hell. We had - and I assume the company still works with them today - great partner suppliers. I see that there's one company - which has been discussed in this thread - that looks like they have the menu or pick-and-choose method. Not all OEM vendors are the same, and your mileage will definitely vary.

I think in EU or UK it would be classified as a moped rather then a pedalec given that it doesn't need you to pedal and the high top speed (which really needs to change). Cool piece of kit though and seems to be a very practical tool for getting around. We need more solutions like this and less reliance on cars for shorter trips

No matter what is it rated as, in Birmingham, UK, you can ride it without any consequences. Kids on my street are riding big enduro bikes (with combustion engines), without helmets or registration plates (but in balaclavas). Coppers drove many times next to them. Kids just show them their middle finger and ride off to the sunset. Coppers don't even budge. Seen it many times with my own eyes. It's a wild, wild West Midlands we're living...

No regen brakeing? Regen is the one big advantage (other than price) that hub motors have over frame moters. Also chain life.
@MHH3180
@MHH3180 Жыл бұрын
Actually that is a myth. Regen doesn't generate anywhere near the additional battery that you gain from normal coasting. It is efficient braking, but it's not like modern brakes don't have plenty of strength by themselves. Hub motors restrict cassette options and hub life as well as wheel life on spoked rims and of course are a hassle fixing flats. Chains do not wear excessively on mid-drives. They do move faster and folks ride longer, but a single human leg exerts a great deal more torque than any e-bike motor and delivers it more linearly.

GCN put out a review of an "in-house designed bike" quite a while back - it was horrifyingly awful and lots of people got upset, calling them on it. Turns out it was on April 1, and they later admitted was an April Fools joke. Yeah, this was a strange review, but it's September.

As the bike is motorised why is there no requirement for the appropriate personal protective gear? With a moped restricted to 30mph you are required by law to wear an approved motorcycle helmet and appropriate clothing. I am not necessarily advocating full motorcycle GP helmet and leathers but there must be some consistency in the approach to safety. The classic bicycle helmet as demonstrated along with Lycra shorts and cycling shoes is woefully inadequate. A halfway house of say a BMX style helmet and an outfit with protection panels along with some protective boots would be the best solution. The argument that the effort to pedal the e-bike requires minimal clothing doesn't stack up because the e-bike is there to limit the effort and can take over so no effort is required. I consider this to be an electric moped rather than an electrically assisted bicycle. The other issue is then third party insurance and an inspection regime to make sure it is roadworthy. It is however, very impressive Edit> Having checked, Hambini's e-bike can only be ridden off-road as it is capable of more than 15.5mph under electrical power only. If it is ridden on the road it is considered an electric moped and the full regulations are in force include driving license, tax and insurance as well as a motorcycle helmet as a minimum. This bike can't and should not have been used on any cycleway track, footpath or road as it is not Type Approved for UK, which limits its useful application. The web site is woefully devoid of any comment about its lawful application and thus is deceitful by omission. Buyer beware!!!!

There's no UK requirement for any protective equipment on any size of moped or motorcycle other than an approved helmet. You could ride naked and be legal, as long as you wear a helmet.
@clivewilliams3661
@clivewilliams3661 Жыл бұрын
@@weevilinabox Although there is no official requirement to wear protective jacket, trousers, gloves and boots the police will stop you if you are inappropriately dressed and riding in a pair of 'Y' fronts would constitute that, naked goes into a different realm of law. It is highly recommended that hi-vis gear is also worn. Personally, I think you ought to be sectioned for riding without a reasonable level of protective gear having seen the results of bare skin on tarmac and feet caught in the rear wheel/suspension of motorbikes. The more I think about it, Hambini is either intent on a suicidal flouting of the law or he genuinely doesn't realise what he has done.

There is nothing elaborate about that rear triangle. This is a tried and true setup, long out of patent protection. It provides limited efficiency when pedalling (tends to bob), so try to keep it locked on hard surfaces. I like the anti-rattle rubber on the cables in the front. It shows good attention to detail.

How's the law over there in the UK regarding e-bikes? Here in Germany you are allowed to drive pedal assisted e-bikes, called pedelecs, with a max power of 250 W and a max speed of 25 km/h. Then there are so called s-pedelecs, which can go up to 45 km/h. But you need a drivers licence, a number plate and a helmet (every serious cyclist should wear a helmet) and you are not allowed to use cycle paths anymore. You have to drive on the road instead, between or next to the cars...
