The coloration change is mostly due to the adaptation of the environment with some slight supplementation from the minerals present on the substrate. Try experimenting on different substrates like reddish dirt, black volcanic sand, black sand, a solid clay brick that covers the entire floor, an entire solid wooden board, etc... Check which substrate makes the most coloration. Darker substartes are usually the best.
