I use old guitar strings for aerials and antennas, also make my own tow cables from strands of thin wire twisted in a drill.

Great idea! I'll have to clip some strings off my banjo next time I do antenna 😉

I recommend adding just the tiniest amount of snow at the deepest crevices and tracks, to make it look more winter-ish. Also exhaust effect can also be made with airbrushisg thinned down black and then add black enamel wash. 5 minutes after you apply the wash use a small fine brush and do an up and down motion to create streaking effects, this way it will replicate grime and oil stains. But all and all i really like the result. It's not too dirty but not too clean, awesome.

I tried out some snow effects and I really wanted it to work, but I didn’t like the look. I just couldn’t get it to not look cheesy - that’s not the fault of the product, just my lack of skill. I’ll have to test out some different products and try again in the future. Nice idea on the streaked exhaust, I haven’t thought of doing it like that!

the soft pencil is good but Tamiya make what they call weathering master, which are pigment pallets, they give a much better finish and in a variety of colours for rust and bare metals. chrome pens also make a far superior polished chrome look for things like suspension dampeners that are typically chrome rather than silver. going more in-depth into colour theory, scale affects colours differently, highlights make a big difference in scale so painting raised surfaces in lightened versions of the base colour combined with a wash makes the scale look better. painting with an airbrush also allows you to add colour modulation, making faded paints in the centre of panels with a lightened shade of their main colour combined with properly thinned paints and airbrush pre shading allows for a really worn paint look rather than a very uniform tone. smaller objects also look darker, even if theyre a colour match to an original vehicle due to the way light affects small objects vs big objects. try and avoid painting in matt black as you cant go darker than it, it makes those parts of a model look very strange to the eye as they dont exhibit the same tonal variations as the other colours. its also not a colour commonly seen other than in things like rubber, but due to the scale effect, painting these things perfectly matt black causes weird effects. the same goes for stark white, its almost always better to use an off white. learn to use and navigate scalemates, this will help you determine the age of your models as despite coming in modern boxes, some of the tooling for the parts is over 40 years old in a lot of cases so using this will allow you to see what models are bang for your buck or are probably gonna need a lot of work to look good. they also list suitable detail packs for many kits aswell as spare decal options and replacement parts. retro tip but aerials and cables can be made from a piece of sprue stretched over a lighter or the hob. this allows you to get any thickness you want and in any length. a piece of sprue sharpened makes a very good tool for scraping clear plastic parts clean of paint without scratching them. loot your female family members/girlfriend's nail files, they come in a variety of grits in both stiff and sponge varieties and can even be used polish parts aswell as sanding and fitting. start accumulating things for scratch building like copper wires of various thicknesses, brass tubes, aluminium and lead foils etc. any "spares" like jerry cans, wheels, spare tracks and stuff that go unused in a kit you save for when you need them which in all likelihood is never but they can be really useful for making stowage on that one time you need them

Something I'm doing is an F-14 from Revell. I am using aluminum foil for the areas that have aluminum edges on the real aircraft. Just be sure to use cheap foil that is very thin.

That's a good idea, I haven't heard of that one. The aircraft world is a total mystery to me! I'll have to change that one of these days.

A different way to do the wood, take a microsaw and scratch the grain into it. Then hit it with thin cement. Paint them a lighter brown color then wash them with a darker brown color. Keep it simple.

A good tip for aerials is to get a household brush or broom that has plastic bristles. These make excellent flexible aerials and antennae. Nice build mate

Thanks, great idea! I’ll keep it in mind for next time, much easier than trying to keep the wire from getting bent.
