I think most people think this song is 'Sadness'. It is not. It's an anthology of songs about the Marquis de Sade. Hence the name. I have many of his writings, but that is because I collect books, and not because I align with his beliefs. Sade was a Libertine defined. He spent probably about half of his life in prison in France throughout the late 17th and early 18 centuries in prison because of certain things, and amongst those things, some of the books he wrote. One in particular was banned, burned, and put him away for 12 years. I read his writings because it is the insight into the mind of a freed libertine with no regret - not because he was a good writer - which he was not. He had the talent, and you can see it come out, but then he ruins it. There was an artist within him waiting to spill out, but perhaps it spilled out in his actions rather than his writings. Such was Sade, a tragedy in history as he was in literature, and now in song. Thank you. I do not agree with his extreme sexual libertinism, no, but his writings do expose the soul of someone who, though not well-written, show the soul of someone who at the time was not yet understood. That is what these songs are about.

I should clarify that books such as the stories of Justine and Juliette (good luck finding the correct ones and translations if you don't speak French) show such an innate skill for writing, but that's not what he was concerned with. He was telling a story. I am a collector and reader of many books and can say that Набоков did Sade one better on the subject of 'Justine' with his book, 'Lolita', but.. you must remember this was written around 200 year later. Things do change with storytelling. I should mention that English is my first language, and I do not speak French, and so Sade to me is but translations. That is sad, but the reason I compare the two books, though two centuries apart is because of the object of affection and the prose with which it is written. Nabokov's book, although he was Russian, was written in English, and so I can see all these pages of prose woven together. Sade breaks it up... he has this... prose form of mind, and yet not the fluency to back it up. His story is one of experience which you must live through his 'fiction'. It's a shame he wasn't a better writer.

And as an example, regarding Sade, on the nature of his writings and near the era, would be Dante; a man exiled politically at the time who nevertheless put his words on paper and is now quoted in movies, songs, books, and video games, even; and people don't even realize. Long live the forgotten writers that came before science and society could catch up.

When you understand this song you will then feel that dark history of sade at that era. Basically nobody is perfect and bounds to make mistakes. But, their mistakes let us the later generations learn what life and art is about. That why art itself is an art.

Marquis De Sade was a degenerate, I was a degenerate too, but I got saved by the Holy Spirit and now am Catholic, servant of the Lord. I like this song, it's beautiful, especially the Gregorian chants are great, but also the voice of the singer Sandra Cretu and the arrangements. Best part is when they shout "HOSANNA" - it is praise to God and means ""a special honor to the one who saves." Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! -Matthew 21:9

The song has Nothing to do with sadness. Sade is short for Sadism. It is about crazy sex. Sorry to say. I really think this song, and many of Enigma's songs are about the conflict between the physical (body, sexuality, corporeal) and the spiritual (meaning of life, spiritual evolution, values and morals). This is immediately made clear in the music itself - the contrast between the ethereality of much of the spiritual/religious music such as Gregorian chants and others that they sample, with their grinding, techno, primitive and sexy beats. In my opinion, Enigma is not at all Christian in their theology - they offer absolutely no solutions, but only bring the ideas into question. Enigma uses religious music from many different cultures including Christianity, Islam, Hindu, and native peoples, etc. which suggest they are much more easily classified as New Age - a belief that all religions share common spiritual beliefs, but there is no true theology or discipline behind New Age: it is based on personal exploration and it is "situation-specific." If you were to listen to all of Enigma's music, some of it is explicitly New Age, especially the concept behind the name of one of their albums, The Screen Behind the Mirror." The Marquis de Sade may be the writer who others later used as a historical figure in the term sadism or the practice and beliefs of sado-masochism, but contemporary sado-masochism is entirely different than what the Marquis described or practiced. I see this song as clearly playing with (not coming to any conclusions about) the idea of sadism as a sexual/spiritual practice - it believes there is a spiritual release into Oneness, through the techniques of domination of submission through sexual practices that include pain and humiliation. Practitioners describe a religious ecstasy when certain thresholds are crossed. The Marquis de Sade is referred to as a representative of the practice of sado-masochism. In a sense, the questioner is conflicted between her Christian beliefs that sex, domination, submission, pain and humiliation are evil, while she herself is tempted by them, or perhaps has experienced them. She asks: Sade, tell me Sade, give it to me ("give it to me" is a sexual reference) Let us come in peace (a play on the word "come") In the name of Christ, Amen (a teasing sacrilegious reference in this context). Sado-masochism is a paradox, because it promotes a powerful pleasure to its practitioners, and a type of spiritual experience that feels "divine" while using techniques that are generally considered evil. Ironically, some interpretations of Christianity, particularly as practiced the Medieval era, promoted submission and domination by the Catholic Church, including self-flagellation and the punishment of the body (the corporeal) to achieve the incorporeal (spiritual awakening).

Luka, I read your comment after 2 years since you posted. At this time (and for some time) we have a double helix DNA. We have been reduced to almost zero of our human/spiritual powers. Thus there has been a bastardization of both our spirituality and our sexuality, meaning that which remains. And although powerful and sufficient when we understand and connect to these powers in compassion, we have completely lost our way as human beings. Up is down, hate is love. This is what the Marquis and many philosophers, poets, religions and religious figures, as well as various artists and officials and politicians and entertainers were referring to at the many different transitional states humanity has moved through around power, authority, and belief. With but 2 strands, everything easily represents something else rather than itself. However 2 strands are enough to continue with lineage and thus as a species. It’s also enough to return to additional powers we once had but that requires some becoming super powered. The reason for exploring the darkness of sexuality, spirituality (as religiosity), control and torture is the thinking that if it eradicated darkness (defined as our inability to see and know), we spare ourselves. It has been considered the greatest of spiritual questing on this planet up until now in that sense. In that pursuit many youth have been tested and broken into pieces. The modern world is unaware of the greater quest that is occurring. It is also unaware of the fact that questing in this manner to eradicate darkness (or as some call it sin or evil) will not result in the saving of souls. In the realest possible sense, there are no souls to save. This confusion is why at times societies have foreseen a savior, someone who uplifts with light not by entering darkness but who also has to pay the ultimate price. Yes, it’s all a very twisted attempt to return to our real powers, powers that even at our worst, we can sometimes almost touch. Meanwhile the global unfolding of massive mis-leadership, obstruction, confusion and torment continues as if each one is playing out a unique terminal bit, with the drama of not saints, not sinners but a splintered-ness that cannot be redeemed. Healing the double helix for what it truly offers, having nothing to do with exploitation, is the beginning of the return to innocence. 👋

This song is definitely beautiful! The choir is singing about Heaven and the King of Glory: Jesus, who died to pay for every person's mistakes so they didn't have too. It was only because He loved us. Now, whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life with Him. The woman is wanting to learn more, while the man is asking whether she chooses divine (God) or something else. I hope this helps. If you want more music about the King of Glory, I recommend Elevation Worship. They're better than this song any day.

Selah
