Never again will there be such a singer with such heart--he gave his all every time. His voice as Toscanni said was "a miracle" and all of us who are privileged to hear him in 2014 are blessed by his immortal presence. Someday we will hear him again in the Heavenly Choir . One day about 10 yrs ago i was playing his Vesti la giubba on my windup Pathe machine and the doorbell rang--a young man--a plumber--had come to do some work for me in my house. I left the recording on when in answered the bell--he came in and asked who is that singing--he grabs me in the heart!! He had NO knowledge of singers opera or anything of the sort--but that is what Caruso does--EVERY TIME! Heart and Soul--that was and IS ENRICO CARUSO.!!!!!!!!!

There have been many great tenors and singers since, but I personally do not think there has been any with a comparable empathy and permeating understanding of what he was singing as Enrico. Certainly not all people think so. Your plumber did, instantaneously. Fantastic! Many Americans believe Lanza was the ultimate tenor, supported by - apparently - statements from Toscanini, Pavarotti and others. He certainly had a great voice, but he was no Caruso....

The 1st time I heard this by Caruso, I was blown away by the last word: Addio. I haven't heard every tenor, but those I have all hold the last syllable. Never have I heard the stress where it belongs. And his 'word' was so on purpose, it raised the question: was it the word, itself, that dictated, or some musical genius? Whatever, expecting only what I've heard before, Caruso's hit me like a medicine ball--knocked me out- :). There is more to this fellow than meets the ear. Thanks for posting.

Robert Burgess - In almost every recording I have heard of Caruso on You Tube he adds something extra to convey meaning and heart felt emotion. In this case it was the last "Addio," along with the slight sob. Coupled with his tonal clarity, legato and sublime upper register, his genius is just heavenly.

A parte che il confronto con Pavarotti non è appropriato perché big Luciano non è voce da Cavalleria, però consiglio una visita amplifon! Se definisce zero un'artista come caruso sarei curioso di conoscere quali sono i tenori che lei ascolta
