Entanglement Almost Kills Baby Seal

This baby seal showed true resilience. Despite his near-fatal situation, he was strong and healthy. At this young age, the seal is still dependent on his mother’s milk, and she did a great job nurturing him, despite the smelly wound from the fishing line around his neck. The little pup had no chance to remove the entanglement by himself and was forced to endure unthinkable pain until the OCN rescuers came along. No animal should have to go through such cruelty, and many of them die below the surface without ever being reported or even noticed. This has to STOP!

Every time I see them suffering and painful I cried, we’re human who leaves all these plastic fishing lines around the ocean, poor animals I feel suffering for them, thank you the team for saving them

So much tension and pain on the neck on that pup. Good that the tour group stayed to show OCN where the seal group were. Its also good they kept their distance. Not spooking the animals.

I think you got to him in time. He seemed strong still, despite the terrible wound, and was able to keep up with his mates at a run. Hopefully, the injury will heal and he'll grow big and strong. All thanks to you. Thank you for saving his precious life.

And it’s especially a pity for little ones like this seal, because a little more time and he would have been gone, and all because someone threw a fishing line into the water. Our efforts are just a drop in the bucket compared to the millions of tonnes of trash entering the world's oceans every year. We are unfortunately not solving the problem, but only treating the symptoms of the plastic crisis with our rescues. These videos aim to show the consequences of this pollution and create a change to tackle its roots - namely our addiction to single-use plastics, the lack of law enforcement at sea, and the shortcomings of the recycling industry.

The entanglements are all awful, but at one point it looked as if this pup's head was nearly severed😢. I sat here mentally begging for you to be able to help. She was so little, and so confused about what had happened, I am afraid for her and really hope she has at least a chance. I am heartbroken for her and all of the others entangled; there is no need for the world's oceans and rivers to be full of our rubbish. Thank you, as ever, for being so gentle and for giving her a chance that she did not have before ❤

Dammit, it makes me so angry that human behaviors lead to such terrible situations. So glad OCN does this work, but how can we prevent this from happening in the first place? Uggh!

Over 14 million tonnes of plastic enter the world's oceans every year, and items manufactured in loops readily become hooked around the body, limbs, neck and through the mouth of marine animals. Most of them are unfortunately never recorded as they die out of sight, but pinnipeds regularly haul out and therefore get the chance to be spotted and sometimes rescued. Many studies show that fishing gear poses the greatest entanglement threat to marine wildlife. Fishing activities are inherently destructive and fully participate to the plastic crisis our oceans are now facing. We therefore encourage our viewers to stop eating seafood.

It's rescues like this one that keep me watching and posting. I realize they are graphic, sad, even heart breaking, but people need to wake up and realize the effects of EVERY piece of trash we create. Weather we toss it into a landfill or the ocean, its killing our planet and its wildlife.
