All my knowledge about basic D&D magic items was poured into this video after years of DMing 5e. This video combines all other previous videos in the series and is the complete guide to basic D&D magic items.
Disclaimer: This video is made from my own opinions and experiences. It is filled with my own bias. You might have a different opinion. Great! Leave it in the comments. However, be respectful and don't shutdown discourse. Thank you - Colin

@@jaimetheone9150 😂Hey, new dms can have a hard time with power balance lmao, but yeah you can always ask your dm abt it if he is too scarce on them, but i'll defend not giving too many or the player at once bc otherwise you have to trow them enemies that either get one shot or one shot them with less scalability (An older DM should be okay to deal with it though)

@@bullabythecroissant2004 All DMs I know are too afraid of magic items, they always say it's too early, and the most they give you are uncommons, after giving you dirty looks and saying that you are too powerful. I don't know what are they waiting for, since most campaings only go until level 12, 13 tops.

I love the ring of mind shielding because it's basically Baby's First Phylactery. My PC had one and became a reoccurring villain in my next campaign. He only ended up defeated because we fed the ring to a goat that could dissolve magic items in her stomach.

I had a character in one of my games ask how an enemy ranger's arrow quiver was attached to them. I answered that it is strapped around their waist with a belt, latch and all. She immediately pulls out her Chime of Opening to open the latch, causing the quiver to fall and leave the ranger without any arrows. Brilliant play that left the enemy without their method of doing the most damage.

I guess the DM didn't use spell mechanics like "range". Imagine closing ranks on a guy in combat and you have a "key" in your hand. Or a chime? While he is shooting at you? 😕 Now if the range on that chime is 100 feet.... that makes sense.

You can strike it as an action, pointing it at an object within 120 feet of you that can be opened, such as a door, lid, or lock. The chime issues a clear tone, and one lock or latch on the object opens unless the sound can't reach the object. If no locks or latches remain, the object itself opens. @redfaux74 RAW and RAI it works.

I always played a sorcerer. We ran 3.5. My dad was always our DM. He and his friends played 2nd when they were in high school. And me and my siblings learned to play from him. My longest running character, my dad made a BBEG with the Ioun Stones. Every encounter we outwitted him, and he shed a stone to my gain. Still best story I've ever played.

I realize how old this video is now to make this comment but for those watching after this, the potion of speed does still come with the negative effects of the haste spell. The item says you gain the effects of the haste spell, and the lethargy is one of those effects. It happens regardless of whether concentration is dropped or the duration expires, and the potion doesn't say to ignore any part of it (which some magic items do specify). That said, getting the effect without having to concentrate on the spell is still incredibly strong!

Fun fact: The penalty for lacking proficiency in a shield applies when the shield is "worn" so anyone can use an animated shield. Except for a monk because you lose unarmored defense and movement when a shield is "benefited from" It can also protect a moon druids wild shape or anyone you polymorph since those stop you from using items that are "worn or carried" Anyone currently not using a shield, besides a monk, can use the animated shield quite well. But beware. As it can be targeted by spells directly and destroyed since it is no longer worn or carried
@deffdefying4803
@deffdefying4803 8 ай бұрын
Reading the monk's Unarmored Defense feature on DDB, it makes no special mention about the monk not being able to have shields at all - simply that they must not be *wielding* a shield. I would personally interpret this as holding the shield with intent to use it. With an animated shield, as long as it's animated, you are not holding it - because it explicitly states in its description that it leaps into the air and orbits your space, leaving your hands free. I'd imagine the point of monks not being proficient with shields, and their features being heavily dependent on not wielding shields, is that they need their hands to be free all the time. Their main purpose is to beat the piss out of other creatures with unarmed strikes, after all.

Speaking of DM’s giving certain bonuses to players with high INT scores, I had a player Wizard that had a 20 intelligence score and the linguist feat, she came across some Sylvan signs in a forest, and she didn’t speak Sylvan but did happen to speak Elven, so since her INT was so high and she was a linguist, I ruled that she was able to roughly decipher the Sylvan runes, and it’s fortunate she was able to, because it was a warning that those areas of the woods were protected by the Fey and off limits to outsiders.

I have always feared a deck of many things breaking an immersive campaign. One twist I've wanted to give it (never tried) is that it is found inert. It activates for one draw when 3 nat 20s are rolled by the party in its presence without any nat 1s in between. Maybe signal this to the party by having all the cards have 3 symbols on the back that light up one by one when a nat 20 is rolled and dissipate if a nat 1 is. Make it a puzzle that also depends on luck. But leave it active (disregarding further nat 1s) until used so they still can have that tactical choice of a hail Mary after solving its activation

There's a scene in The Thirteenth Warrior where Antonio Banderas's character, an Arabic intellectual who's stuck traveling with a dozen meatheaded Viking warriors, has been given a broadsword which he can barely lift. After failing miserably to chop a couple wooden stakes with this heavy clumsy thing, while the Vikings make fun of him for being weak like a girl (their words), he goes over to the village smith and asks to use his grinding wheel. Then, having ground down the broadsword and turned it into a scimitar, he's instantly awesome with it, and slices the log perfectly with a single one-handed stroke. The Scimitar of Speed really makes me think of that scene.

I understand your reasoning for putting the Ring of Mind Shielding so low, the variance is too large from table to table. However, from a DMs perspective, the ring should be a top 10 item to give to a party from a lore and role play perspective alone. The shielding properties are great but the part of the item description where it says 'unless it already houses a soul' is where the real power lies. Sure the party can buy a clean ring, but think of what crazy shenanigans a DM can pull with a soul-occupied ring. A person from a pre-calamity race, the last survivor of their kind. A soul of a short-lived race, who's long-lived lover had lost the ring, and thus all hopes of resurrection for their short-lived partner. A prisoner, who made a deal with a guard to circumvent their life sentence. etc etc. Plot hooks, lore from eons passed, or 'backseat adventuring' role play are at your parties fingertips. Well not quite, but third digit is close enough.

I could not agree with you more. There were drafts in this script where I had the ring in my top 20. It is one of my all time favorite items to give out and use as a player.

34:05 I'm pretty sure you can store more than one spell in that ring, as long as the total combined spell levels are up to five (five 1st level spells, or one 3rd level and two 1st level spells for example)

Back in 2e. We often used a Daerns Instant Fortress to dig holes for construction quickly. As the fortress also made a 10x10 hole when used back then.

I love using upgraded ammunition as it stacks with the bows bonuses. Ranger hunting a very important target, +2 bow, +3 arrow, +5 total, and why stop at +3 you can go to +5 or +10 to give that character their guaranteed shot when it counts.

Going from level 4 to 5 feels very good, but going from level 1 to 2 doubles your power and shifts the game from survival horror to an adventure.

That is very true. However.... being a mage who can cast the next level of spells is also a huge game changer. In my old group 30 years ago.....I was always of the mental classes. Mage, cleric, psionicist and combination of those. We were allowed to "research" powers and spells. Designing a higher level spell was so incredible. Ex: 4th level variant of Fireball with more damage, volume and range ...OR... 5th level variant of Fly with faster speed, longer effect, AC bonus during flight vs missiles. I played a character who was a necromancer and researched the gaseous form of the vampire, 3rd level. Game changer.

Fun fact any item that has a set dc is buffed in the hands of a investment of the chain master familiar because as per the Invocation "any DC the familiar causes can be replaced with your spell save dc"

Great video one minor nitpick unless your house ruling it different RAW when the effect of a potion of speed ends You also received the penalty just like if a haste spell had ended 👍

I used the potion of speed to save my party from a TPK. I bought it from a potion merchant at a steep price to keep it in my back pocket at the right moment. Let me set the scene: We’re in a massive war within the drowned forest of saltmarsh. Enemies forces include 300~ twig blights 75~ treants 5 water elementals and a dryad possessed by Zuggtmoy. Out forces include 100~ bullywugs, 5 bullywug knights, 1 bullywug royal, a vrock and 5 level 4 party members. Yes, we were level 4 and fighting all that. The campaign has been running for 3 years so while we don’t build levels quickly we build wealth and allies. Anyway we’re in the weeds on this fight, thanks to Zuggtmoy our troops were becoming zombies once dead and our most annoying party member was being mind controlled. Party is scattered, fighting their own battles and our exit strategy of using the last charge in my helm of teleportation wasn’t looking viable. Seeing Zugg low and running away so her army can deal with us I said “Fuck it”, I drank the potion of speed, sped over to the biggest group of bullywugs in range and teleported us to the fleeing bitch. Due to the nature of the special initiative we were running for this war, the DM ruled that we would roll off for a smaller initiative to see who got to act first. Zugg or the bullywugs. She rolls an 18. Hope is almost lost until I roll a natural 20. We gank the evil god, steal her necklace and with just 1-2 rounds before the party was going to die I sped over with my 180ft movement speed to seal the rift to Zuggtmoy’s dimension, cutting off her magic and stopping the army. My butt was never more clenched than it was in this fight.

1:23:50 You said crits can swing the tide of battles, and you are right. I, as a level 4 paladin did 256 damage with a crit plus inspiration for max damage.

One thing I did was give a barbarian player a weapon which allowed him to reduce his AC to get additional damage equal to the amount he reduced his AC by until the start of his next turn.

My DM was rolling loot tables, and my paladin got a Staff of the Magi at level 7. Kinda sat on it a while because i was a new player, didn't think a paladin would use a staff. Then my paladin died, and i rolled up a wizard, and one of my other party members saved it for me. My wizard had god rolled stats, and arguably the strongest item in the game for him. Absolutely love that staff, said wizard still has it and he's level 16 now, basically a bossfight in and of himself. Also wound up getting his hands on a Tome of Clear thought, boosting his Intelligence to 22 which definitely helped.

Protip: Before "hiding the entire party inside your Portable Hole" get the party to give the person carrying the Portable Hole any extra-dimensional items, like, Bags of Holding, unless you want the entire party to suddenly be hiding in another Plane.

The benefit of the rod of absorption or the Staff of the Magi is that you can only be countered if you have used your reaction. I cast disintegrate Wizard casts counterspell at 6th lvl I trigger the rod of absorption gaining 6 charges...and disintegrate the wizard.

A combination of Items that I've always thought was under-appreciated is the Ring of Comfort paired with a Ring of Sustenance. *after double-checking they've apparently changed the Ring of Comfort (or we weren't playing it right), I recall it being a ring that made the environment up to 50 degrees more comfortable, i.e. 130 degrees in the desert becomes a sunny 80, and 10 Below in a blizzard becomes a brisk but tolerable 40 degrees. Similar to what is now a Ring of Warmth but it went both ways on the temp scale.
