that last story is kind of a red flag tbh, when you move in with your partner you're supposed to support each other, i understand that from her perspective it doesn't feel fair to have to pay more, but if your partner can't afford it then that's the end of it. It's fine to keep your money separate but for basic living expenses you're supposed to work together and build your new life as a couple.

For the first story, as someone who stepped on a shard of glass at a pool at the age of 3 or 4, it was traumatizing. I didn’t want to go anywhere near pools for a year or so. I want to thank the OP through this comment for enforcing that rule.

Last story. Most of my friends have the same arrangements with their wives or girlfriends. 50% of each parts income goes into a shared account that is used for rent, and anything else that is shared, regardless of who has the highest income.

Working in aged care I have seen so many horrible families. There was one that made sure we kept their suffering mum alive for as long as possible despite cancer eating away at her all because the daughter was claiming her mothers government payments and was milking the system for all she could get for her mother. All the stuff her mum had was things her sister bought their mum. And when the mum passed away the mean daughter took everything even stuff belonging to her sisters. It was horrible and as lowly workers we couldn’t do much about it other then making sure the other didn’t suffer as much as we could. Another family the son said he would live with mum and look after her even though his sister who is a aged care worker wanted to even was willing to fly her mum out to her state. But what happened was the son stole all the mums jewellery and sold it all and when his mum started to get dementia he made her sign her house over into his name the moment it was offical he sent her to my aged care home and never visited he then sold the house and kept all the money. The sister was upset not over the money but how he treated their mother and at that point their mother was to week to travel to another state so the daughter would fly down every 2 weeks to visit her mother for the weekend. She hated that her mother was so alone. They also had another sister who lived close never visited and didn’t try stopping her brother.

All these are great. I watch them to take time out of my day. Very great and got a new sub a week ago!

With the last story, you gotta do things fairly but account for the difference in wages. I'm sure there's maths to do that that will show her what's mathematically fair. Half and half isn't fair if half for person 1 is like 1/3 of their wages but for person 2 their half is 2.5/3 of their wages. You gotta account for that.

For Story 2: I used to work in Apartment Maintenance and there was one apartment where a family had closed off the Master Bedroom closet, Knocked out the wall of the Hall Closet and they converted the Master Closet into a third bedroom. When they left my coworkers and I had to repair the wall in the hall closet and fix the Master Bedroom closet door.

Dollars aren't the only way things can be equitable. If they pay equal dollar amounts, they won't be working equally long to pay the rent, they won't be struggling equally, they won't have equal amounts left over to do other things. There's many ways to be equitable and there should be balance if you're partners.

As much as I hope my grandma leaves me something I’m not expecting it because there are so many kids and grandkids and great grandkids that she could possibly leave whatever she has to. But I would actually expect my uncle her oldest son to get most and i would be upset with any family members who felt entitled to anything if he got most. He’s been taking care of her and living in her house because she can’t drive and get in and out of the car by herself anymore. He’s done the best he can while he works during the day and someone else usually watches her when needed to give my uncle some time to himself when needed or go do other things to still have a life.

The rent split story is a simple enough solution. If op is dead set determined to live with her (terrible idea btw) he needs to get a better paying job. Most hospitals have good paying jobs in the kitchen.

I feel for the OP, who seems to be trying as best as possible to make ends meet. And I definitely agree that he shouldn't be asked to share half the costs of things beyond his means. So I don't think what he's asking is too much at all. But not being married or with any sort of community property, she's within her rights to say no, as this is just paying an equal share for equal value of half the apartment. BUT--- I would find this kind of hard attitude on her part a bit of a red flag for the future. Would she help him financially if he was incapacitated in a life threatening emergency, and didn't have the money or insurance to cover it? Would she throw him over for a wealthier partner if the opportunity arose? And would she rethink this policy if they were to be married or have a child together? Just as she's within her rights to say no to a sliding contribution scale, he's within his if he wants out, due to her uncaring attitude.

Look for a place YOU can afford in a 50 50 split...anything above that, SHE needs to pay for, IF that's what she REALLY wants. If one person looses income.... the other would have to pay for everything. Seems only fair

The i broke up with my boyfriend one. I agree that she messed up especially with when she said she told him "I don't know what the future holds." Yeah coming from someone who ghosted a friend to get rid of them (its a mess of a story involving the friend doing drugs and screwing me over financially). It leaves OP's ex thinking this. Honestly she could've just said something to the effect of "Sorry but for my mental health. I am unable to deal with you drinking anymore." Something that is almost like ripping the bandage off but doesn't hurt him further.

I feel torn for the last story : on the one hand, OP making much less and so wanting to split 60/40 is justified, on the other hand OP seems to want to live somewhere he can't afford and just expects his girlfriend to be ok paying more on an expensive place instead of talking to her about the issue (saying he can't afford it so they should look for something cheaper) as he already has trouble adjusting for a smaller place outside his parent's before he even moved. But the girlfriend laughing it off and refusing, no compromise made, is plain disrespectful.

Unfortunately, helping out is not a requirement for inheritance. If the grandmother did not have a will, then everything eventually gets divided evenly among her children. However, not having a will means there's a whole legal process involving courts before anything is distributed. However, anything the OP's mother paid for in the care of the mother would be reimbursable provided she has receipts. Essentially, she'd be a creditor and get paid before the remaining assets are distributed. Taking the money from the bank account prior to this process is actually illegal. My wife went through this with her dad's estate and she's an only child. We had problems with paperwork and which court to file it at. Eventually, she just gave up because the estate was so small, it wasn't worth the hassle. For example, he had a pension from his former employer that was being direct deposited into his bank account. It took time to go through his papers and had to submit them a death certificate to get them to stop. This took time. If we'd touched any of the money deposited after his death, we'd have been in big trouble.

The one with the alcoholic boyfriend. I would be clear with him, and no movies, I love yous, nothing. Letting him know there would be no romantic relationship, is kind. He can then assess himself, after the hurt feelings have gone and work on himself, if he chooses. Then, he is also free to date someone else, or show her the changed man he has become. They can embark on a new relationship or become genuine friends.

My boyfriend makes about twice what I do a month, but we split bills 40/60. So I end up having much less spending money than he does, but it hardly matters to me.

So for Story #6. Yeah, so this is one of those everyone is the jerk/ no one is the jerk situations. I feel like a 50/50 is needed in every home because it is not fair to put more financial problems on one side or the other just because they make more. Considering most of the time, they worked hard to get into a position that pays them highly (I know there are a few who do not, I am saying generally.) However, as AmITheJerk mentioned, if he doesn't make as much as she does, she needs to think about his financial situation and realize that 50/50 could cause problems in higher-income apartments. So in that regard if she is going to go behind his back and keep looking into them after you informed her that you cannot keep up with that kind of rent... then if she still insists, that is when I would tell her that I can't afford it, so either you get your 50/50 or if you are so bent on these kinds of places that I cannot afford, then we will have to work out a 60/40 exchange so I can afford other bills. It is about communication in the end. I feel like OP should have the conversation with his girlfriend, and if she genuinely laughs him off, then break it off with her, because she is not willing to support your relationship in a healthy manner. A healthy relationship would never laugh at you for considering the idea. If you say "I cannot afford the kinds of housing you are looking into making a 50/50 arrangement, and we will have to stay in the price range of $--.-- if you want to keep it 50/50." And she LAUGHS?! Then she is clearly entitled and you are dodging a bullet. Any healthy relationship would consider what you are saying and make a genuine effort to accommodate your financial struggles. Ex. My husband always goes to manual labor jobs with a lower income than I bring home. It hasn't been the easiest, but I support him and try to let him know that I am happy with the decisions he makes. I make sure to split the bills 50/50 as he can afford them, but I don't force him to give me everything he has if he comes up short some weeks. This does mean that some weeks we come up 60 or more percent coming out of my pay, to cover the cost of his wages lost. Instead, now that he has gotten older, I simply ask him if he is truly happy in the fields he is working, knowing he isn't picking up retirement and will probably be working there the rest of his life. He admitted to me in confidence it was all he was ever good at aside from computers, and now I am helping him through his schooling, so he can get a higher-paying job that isn't as manually taxing, with retirement benefits. He is happier, and even if he chooses not to go down this route, I would still support his decision to stay in the manual labor workforce, because I want his happiness, first. Your partner's happiness and well-being should come first. And if she prefers the high-cost living style, knowing that you can't afford it, she is going to have to make some changes on her part to satisfy it, because in the end, you can't give what you don't make. Plain and simple.
