Fun Fact: Catherine Zeta-Jones was dubbed in Japanese by Rika Fukami (best known as Minako Aino/Sailor Venus of the original *"Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon"* anime series & film trilogy) who had previously dubbed for Bond girl Kara Milovy (Maryam D'Abo) in the 1998 TV Asahi edition of *"The Living Day-lights"* (1987). On a side note, Kara had been previously dubbed by Masako Katsuki (Michiru Kaiou /Sailor Neptune) for the film's TBS (Tokyo Broadcast System) edition in 1993, and she went on to dub for Dalton's second Bond girl: Pam Bouvier (Carey Lowell) in both the 1990 VHS & the 1996 TBS edition of *"Licence To Kill".*

This films does feel very '1999', not only in the millennium countdown [originally planned-like Tomorrow Never Dies-to be around the Hong Kong hand over in 1997] but also the locations- Malaysia hosted an F1 race for the first time that year, hosting the commonwealth games in 1998 [when that was more significant than it is now] and, like Saudi Arabia currently, was making a big push to increase it's profile internationally. Bar jokes about the 'laser scene' [and age gap], it does seem to mostly be forgotten now [personally I don't recall seeing it very much after it's initial TV premier and I can't say I have much interest in changing that].

I have seen Catherine Zeta-Jones being linked to the 'lost 3rd Dalton film' by some Bond fans-probably due to this film as the lead Bond girl-Connie Webb-was a cat burglar. It really doesn't tally to where Zeta-Jones was career wise in 1990/91 [just making her breakthrough in 'Darling Buds of May' in a 'girl next door' role] and [like many Bond girl roles at the time] the part was earmarked for an American actress.
@DafyddBrooks4 ай бұрын
Perfic!!! I mean that book by M edlitz just debunked everything and no way was Catherine that high up of an actress to be in a Bond movie in the early 90's.
@davidjames5794 ай бұрын
To be fair, even though she was playing a farmer's daughter in Darling Buds she was meant to be and was a knockout, both looks and personality wise. But although the show did make her talked about in the papers as a national sweetheart, she wasn't been talked up for movies. In fact after the series ended she had a few empty years. Seemingly overexposed in the press because of her love life, she couldn't get much notable work in the UK and so moved to L.A. There a part in a Titanic mini series caught the attention of Spielberg who suggested her for the female lead in The Mask Of Zorro to it's director, none other than Martin Campbell. And the rest is history. Interesting comparison with the Gin character to Connie Webb though.
@jamesatkinsonja4 ай бұрын
@@davidjames579 Agreed-she was very much an It girl [by UK standards] but had a bit of a fallow period after the 'Darling buds' finished before Zorro [I didn't know Spielberg recommend her for it!-that's cool]. I've heard Campbell wanted Goldeneye's Izabella Scorupco for the Zorro part but she turned it down [she does show up in Campbell's 'Vertical Limit'] It's interesting that when the 'Bond 17' script pretty much became the basis of TND, the Webb character was dropped and the supporting character of the Asian agent was beefed up to become Wai Lin.
@davidjames5794 ай бұрын
@@jamesatkinsonja Yeah Spielberg produced The Mask Of Zorro. And selected Campbell based on GoldenEye. Yeah I'd heard he wanted to work with Izabella again. I believe the beefing up of the character Mi Wai (groan) into a main character was down to Roger Spottiswoode who really wanted to make a film with Michelle Yeoh and showcase her martial arts. You can see that her infiltration of Carver's Hamburg HQ seems like something Connie would do.

In the very next Bond film The Living Daylights Necros acts shifty a number of times while wearing headphones and uses a remote control disguised as a Walkman. A reference or was it just in the filmmaker's subconscious?

I do feel if there is an issue with 'age gaps' in films, it isn't really to do with specific examples [as chemistry is always a personal thing] but more that you rarely see films [especially big Hollywood films] where an older female actress is romancing a much younger man. The Bond girls are generally much younger than Bond's [as shown by Honor Blackman being one of the older ones at 39] which was something Roger Moore felt uneasy about. Maybe it's why Monica Bellucci being 4 years older than Daniel Craig was deemed newsworthy for her Spectre Cameo.

@davidjames5794 ай бұрын
Crichton (who also wrote the novel the film is based on) said that Connery's character was someone who could convincingly fit into Low and High Class worlds, and Connery was the only actor he could imagine pulling that off.

@@davidjames579 There is a great anecdote that Wayne Sleep was told he had to do his own stunts as they couldn't find a stunt double to match his 5' 2'' height!

Armageddon and Deep Impact in 98? The best of the two Bond Heist films was Thomas Crown Affair and I'd put that above any of Brosnans Bond films except Goldeneye. Any plans to do After The Sunset or The Untouchables by any chance Calvin . .
@jamesatkinsonja4 ай бұрын
I agree on both those films getting a review. 'Sunset' also has the novelty of featuring Naomi Harris with Brosnan [and allegedly Salma Hayek was in the running for Jinx before Hallie Berry was cast].

These were two of my favorite guilty pleasures of 1999…Thomas Crown was a little better but this was flashier

Fun and realistic review @Calvin Dyson . I saw Entrapment in the cinemas back in 99 or so and really liked it. Bought it on DVD back then and then it slipped from memory only to get back to me recently watching The Rock (of which there is a ln interesting theory it was actually a Bond film…..let me see if I have a link to that video). Bought it on Blu Ray and like Rising Sun from 93 I have to rewatch it again. If only for Tatjana Patitz…..

Calvin mentioned it in his review of 'The Rock' and said he didn't feel the characters were that linked [he couldn't imagine Connery's Bond saying 'F-K the prom queen' for example]. The Rock resembles 'Die Hard'/Hostage Rescue [and Nick Cage is co-lead] much more than a Bond plot.
@jamesatkinsonja4 ай бұрын
It's similar to how-because of there being a lot of cross over in crew-some people suggest Connery's 'Outland' is set in the Alien universe-it's not but it's a harmless fan theory [the rock more from probably Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais adding some in jokes like some of the references in 'November Man' for Brosnan].

@@jamesatkinsonja in fairness this Bond had been locked up in an American prison for decades, so may have adopted some of the American prison lingo. I certainly think some of his refinement may have chipped away by then. That aside I don't want to think of Mason as Bond as I don't want to think of Bond spending his best years, not doing and getting the things he loves.

I see it as a perfect "nothing else on, may as well watch it" film. Shite, but, in the right frame of mind, sometimes shite can hit the spot. 😁😁

The Russia House is a slow but pleasant espionage-related movie, based on a John Le Carre novel, featuring a relationship between Connery and a 28-years-younger Michelle Pfeiffer, which somehow managed not to get as much blowback as this one. As for Entrapment itself, I just plain dig it. I even like its music video by Seal.
@jamesatkinsonja4 ай бұрын
Probably as few people saw Russia House at the time [it only made $23 million on a $21.8 million budget] and was swiftly forgotten outside fans of Le Carre and the actors.

Connery was one of those rare actors who even at pension age, women in their 20's would say is sexy. It was the same thing with Roger. David Walliams mentions it in his interview with David Zaritski where he says that his then wife said Roger really is still sexy after meeting him, despite him being old enough to be her Grandad. So I think less chance of criticism as they could get why, even when the aged male star, young hot female star pairing was a trope.

I have enduring memories of Film 99 with Jonathan Ross doing a big summer preview show, and this was the first movie featured. I have seen it in the years since and didn't think much. Do think Thomas Crown remake is the better flick. I think the higher box office gross did occur thanks to Catherine Zeta Jones not just bringing the cake, but the whole birthday party!

It's funny how two movies with very similar plots will come out around the same time like Armageddon and Deep Impact or Volcano and Dante's Peak (also starring Pierce Brosnan) is so famous but The Thomas Crown Affair and Entrapment coming out the same year is completely forgotten. Maybe because no one remembers Entrapment. Well except for Adam from Workaholics. "CATHERINE ZETA JOOOOONES! SHE DIPS BENEATH LASERS! OHOHOHO! SHE HAS ENTRAPPED MEEEE! AND SEAN CONNERYYYY!! OHOHOHO!" Still makes me laugh haha.

Hey Calvin, how are you? You should do a review of the Roger Moore saint film called The Fiction-makers. I wouldn't want to reveal the plot if you haven't seen it, but the upcoming film Argylle appears to have many similarities to it.
