Fun facts: This town was also used as Hill Valley in "Back to the Future". -Howie Mandel voiced Gizmo. he would later recycle that same voice for the character Bobby in "Bobby's World". -The producers got sued by the chair lift company, after numerous people returned their units after seeing this movie. -This was one of the first Christmas movies that dealt with seasonal depression.

Before this film, the rating PG-13 didn't exist. The advertisement campaign for this never showed anything except for cute scenes of Gizmo, and the poster for the film only showed Gizmo. Parents assumed this was merely a happy cute Christmas film for kids, so very young children went to see it opening night. After children were terrified with nightmares, and parents angrily calling theaters, a new rating was devised that would warn parents if something wasn't fit for young children, but acceptable for older children and teens. Since before that all there was, was the G, PG, R, X, and Adult Rating. It's crazy that the film Jaws is rated PG, even though the ad campaign did warn people to expect something not suitable for young children. It was inevitable that the PG-13 rating would be created, but it took Gremlins, and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, for the rating to finally be created.

The sequel is a pretty great time too. It amps up the silly factor with some fun variants, and it is very self-aware, at one point they make fun of the 3 rules. Jonathan Banks was the dude in the Sherriff's office. If you saw Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul he's Mike. But he was also in Airplane. He was one of the guys on the scopes who checks on the Turkey in the microwave.

As a few others have pointed out, this movie was PG before PG-13. The gory deaths of the gremlins in the kitchen and Stripe's meltdown were the parts that scared me the most at 6 years old! Surprisingly, it was actually marketed to kids. McDonalds had a Happy Meal promotion that was 4 book-and-record sets that told a condensed and illustrated version of the movie's plot. I had a Gremlins lunchbox in 1st or 2nd grade, with a drawing of Stripe hiding amongst stuffed animals on one of the sides and Gizmo driving the toy car on the front. The 80s were a crazy time to be a kid.

My mom worked in a department store around the time that this movie came out, and told me probably one of the funniest stories I've heard from her. Her bosses went Gremlins crazy and stocked the store with merch because they were convinced it was going to be huge. This was before they'd seen it, of course. After the movie came out, people found out how scary it was, and no kid wanted any part of those toys.

I knew this was going to be fun. Gizmo was voiced by Howie Mandell. Mr. Futterman was played by Dick Miller, who has probably been in 500 movies, his wife was played by Jackie Joseph and the two of them are in the original Little Shop of Horrors movie. I didn't know Mike (Jonathan Banks) was in this, maybe this event is what started him on the road to who he became. Billy (Zack Galligan) and Gizmo reunited for a Mountain Dew commercial. Polly Holliday played the dog hating neighbor, she was Flo in the tv show Alice. Can't wait for Friday. I've never actually watched that movie.

Yep, this was a fun reaction! I loved how you were freaking out at the beginning, but by the end you were laughing and scared at the same time 😄 Mrs. Peltzer is one of my favorite movie moms, she takes care of her family and protects them at all costs. The man Billy spoke with early on at the bar was Chuck Jones, who was responsible for a lot of classic animation, including the Grinch cartoon and many popular Looney Tunes shorts. Mrs. Deagle was played by Polly Holiday, who many back then knew from the TV show "Alice," where she was the sassy waitress with the bouffant hair at Mel's Diner, and when she was mad she'd say "Kiss my grits!" And the movie advertised on the marquee at the beginning, "A Boy's Life (watch the skies)" was the working title for _E.T._

"Now I have another reason to hate Christmas." "What are you talking about?" "The worst thing that ever happened to me was on Christmas. Oh, God. It was so horrible. [✂] And that's how I found out there was no Santa Claus." Sweet Christ! 😳 Fun Fact: This movie and Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom (1984) are credited with inspiring the MPAA to create the PG-13 rating. Many felt the movies were too violent for a PG rating, but not violent enough for an R. Practical Security Fact: Zach Galligan recounted in an interview that when the movie was made, there was no CGI, so all of the Gremlins were animatronics, each costing between $30-40,000. When everyone left the lot for the day, security would have everyone open the trunks of their cars to make sure they weren't stolen. Christmas Nightmare Fact: The "Santa Speech" proved to be controversial and studio executives insisted upon its removal because they felt it was too ambiguous as to whether it was supposed to be funny or sad. Director Joe Dante however stubbornly refused to take the scene out saying it represented this movie as a whole, which had a combination of horrific and comedic elements. Executive producer Steven Spielberg did not like the scene, but despite his creative control, he viewed this movie as Dante's project and allowed him to leave it in. Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) would later hilariously lampoon this ridiculous speech, which I highly recommend.

This *is* a kids movie, just...an *80's* kids movie... That coked up bar scene...imagine an entire movie with that energy and craziness...that's Gremlins 2. Gremlins was played 100% earnest thought while Gremlins 2 is played 100% tongue in cheek meta parody. Both movies are excellent, you just need to be prepared for the change in tone. The town of Kingston Falls set in Gremlins was used one year later in 1985 (without the snow) to be the town of Hill Valley in Back to the Future. At the beginning of the movie you see two movie titles on the marquee there: "A Boy's Life" was the working title for E.T. "Watch the Skies" was the working title for Close Encounters of the Third Kind Both Steven Speilberg films and so more references. When Billy's dad is on the phone in the booth at the inventor's convention, you see a guy drive past him in a little go cart thing and he's wearing like a shriner's cap. That's Steven Speilberg. Also while Randy is there on the phone you see Robbie the Robot from Forbidden Planet and in the background you see the time machine from the 1960 movie The Time Machine. But then the camera switches to a close up of Randy and when it zooms out again the time machine is gone and people there are looking confused like the machine just vanished into thin air, that's what the smoke was from. I saw this movie in the theaters a few times as a kid, then many more times on TV. Watching it so many times I've come up with some theories on how Gremlins physiology works just to keep my own mind from bothering me. Now, what I've heard is the official canon is that with mogwai (which translates into "monster" in Chinese) only 1 in 1000 are good hearted like Gizmo when they are born, the rest are mean terrors like the others. I prefer my own theory I came up with... The water that got splashed on Gizmo was the dirty water Billy used to rinse his paint brushes. The water was tainted, so the mogwai were too. I always imagine Gizmo was born from a drop of water from a crystal clear mountain stream. The mogwai reproduce asexual and they hold fertilized eggs in their skin, it only takes a drop of water to waken them. But it has to be H2O, you could give them milk to drink or bathe them in it and they wouldn't multiply. Even though snow is frozen H2O it's too cold to awaken the eggs. They don't have an infinite amount of eggs, the older eggs eventually die and drop off like dead skin cells and new eggs are constantly being regenerated by their body metabolism. This is why some parts of their bodies seem to get wet but no new Gremlins pop out...the water just happened to hit an area with no eggs, but the water eventually will find some. The eating after midnight thing. This really gave me a headache as a kid until I figured it out to my own satisfaction. The Sun is the weakness of the mogwai. Direct sunlight will kill them, but even indirect sunlight has an effect. It keeps them too weak to go into a pupa stage. But at midnight the sun is directly behind the Earth and the mogwai are at their strongest. Then they only need to eat to trigger metamorphosis. They hold onto this strength past midnight, it takes the sun rise, turning night back to day, to weaken them enough again. So no matter where they are in the world, the rule will still apply only to the midnight of the time zone they are in. I know, I put too much thought into this, but it's how my brain works... Best Regards! Happy Holidays!

I always told her she had an afro but she denied it. Then she was at the grocery store and a black guy told her she had a great afro. At that moment she knew I was right, since a black man confirmed it. 🤣

I love that you loved this so much! Oh the nostalgia I have for this film! I remember watching it with my cousins around Christmas time 1985 or 1986. One of the best memories of my youth. I loved that it was so violent and gross for a kids movie! They don't make em like this anymore. And a little fun trivia- the town they filmed it in is the same "town" (actually a set built outside) is the same town in Back to the Future...and Billy's mom was also in Back to the Future- she played Loraine's mom, just didnt have an afro! Happy Holidays to you and the co pilots!

The Muppet Movie (1979) when I was 4, Airplane! when I was 5, and Ghostbusters when I was 9 all freaked me out when I saw them in theaters! The Muppet Movie, it was only one scene in the entire film that scared me and I loved the rest of the movie sooooo much I kept asking my grandmother to take me to see it again. Whenever it started getting close to that scene, I started getting nervous. I would get up from my seat just before and walk out of the theater and ask the usher to tell me when that part was over. They always did. I also saw Gremlins in the theater when I was 9, but it didn't scare me. First, I was obsessed with seeing this movie. Second, Burger King was doing a tie in promotion where for 5 weeks they sold Gremlims books each accompanied by a record that told part of the story. The first week it was the book and record that told the first part of the story, the second week the next book came out that told the next part, and on and on until the fifth book came out. Before I even saw the movie, I had collected all 5 books and records and they pretty much told the entire movie. I knew going in everything that was going to happen. I guess that prepared me for it enough that I wasn't scared. Best Regards and Happy Holidays!

My "first" favorite childhood movie!!! Picture it...1984....June.....sack cinemas in Somerville Mass....11 years old and my 3 best friends.... little bit of extra info, when Gremlins was over the four of us snuck into the NeverEnding Story and got caught halfway through him or kicked out. Thanks for the reaction I've been enjoying a lot of them. Shut out to the canines... do you have one or two dogs?

I don't know for sure, but I think that Roland Emmerich gave a wink and a nod to the popcorn scene in his 1998 movie Godzilla. I remember the moment I saw that popcorn bag hanging out of baby lizard's mouth, I thought of Gremlins :)

@@dustywaynemusic6297 we had Gremlins, Ghostbusters 2 and either Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom or a great horror gem called Razorback on the same tape, cant remember which. We had so many tapes like that just the same as everyone else back then. One of my most prized was a tv recording of Aliens on network tv back in 88/89 i think. We didnt have cable so just the antenna and the reception that night was horrible so the recording was fuzzy and just barely watchable but i wore that one out as a young kid.

Oh boy, this is gonna be fun! 😄 I saw this in the theater, but I still wasn't allowed to watch "scary" things at the time and don't remember whether or not my mom was aware I was seeing it, it was probably with a friend whom she considered a bad influence (the preacher's kid who taught me how to smoke, yeah), but the main thing I remember is loving the soundtrack, loving all of the old-fashioned WB influence, and bolting up from a nightmare that night crying about a gremlin on my bed 😄 OH! And the sequel's pretty much just this film lampooning itself, it asks all the right questions and isn't afraid to go totally batsh!t. Go in expecting a story that isn't serious and you'll probably have a great time.

My Grandpa took me to see Gremlins in the theater. We were supposed to see the Muppets movie but it was sold out or we missed the showtime. I'm not sure because a sold out matinee seems odd but my Grandpa being late for anything ever seems even more out of place. He called my mom and asked her if it'd be ok. They were both movies about puppets right? Surely my 5yo brain wasn't affected by those terrifying green monsters.

Watching this as an adult, well, rewatching it on your channel with you, I see some things I never noticed as a kid. This movie was more fundamental to my cultural development then I realized. Everything, no matter how scary, has rules. Everything can be understood, and fought, and defeated. This movie taught a generation of 80s kids, yeah, you might be six, but GIZMO can ride a Barbie car and get down to business, no matter how small and feeble you are you're Rambo compared to him and he's standing up against that scaly delinquent. This movie built a generation different by teaching them: the ultimate tactic for beating the scary monster is just turn on the light. Movies like this are why I look at Jean Jacket or Freddy and think of how to kick that thing's ass. 99% of the time it's just a barn owl or a Luna moth once you turn the light on. Also, Gremlins are a made-up story in a scary movie for little kids about Daddy Santa dying in the chimney and scaly demons murdering people in gruesome and hilarious ways, but Mrs Deagle is a true story. There's some crazy lore about these things. You didn't show the bit where Mr Futterman talks about how he saw those back in WWII, but when you were saying, how would you defeat them, you'd have to nuke them. Well, between Mr Futterman's tale and some old Bugs Bunny cartoons, I'm pretty sure that's exactly how they DID beat them the first time. Might have took two tries. Literally the first time anybody fought Gremlins at the movie theater it was a Bugs Bunny cartoon from WWII. Even with cartoon physics being on his side, spoilers for a cartoon older than my dad, he only managed a draw.

Twilight zone did a gremlin episode with William Shatner, and also Buggs Bunny cartoon " Falling Hare" During WW2 airplane mechanics would get failures, and electrical problems they could never fix, or figure out how it happens, they started the whole gremlins in the wiring thing.
