I believe the sE mic Pooch was referring to at 30:40 was the old sE 4 condenser mic which he used for snare top for Linkin Park for a while.

I recorded my band in NY back in 2011 myself because I studied audio in college and have a bachelor's degree. We decided it would make more sense to buy recording gear and never have to go to a studio for recording again. The results were absolutely amazing. We had an isolated (down the hallway lol) control room, 16 channel snake, iMac with Logic Pro, two 8 input focusrite interfaces on FireWire, one of the larger 2011 Waves packs, two Blue Baby Bottle for drum O.H. and vox, cabs, etc etc etc... When it came time to mix, even though my ability as an engineer was clearly proven, everyone decided to use a 3rd party so we went with The Cutting Room and one of their multiple gold and platinum record engineers, Tom Gardner. As it would've been REALLY expensive for us to take more than an hour per song, that's what we decided and Tom was totally capable of that. So after 5 hours of us letting him do his thing we went back to hear what he came up with and it was all incredible EXCEPT for the drums. He pro-tooled all of my incredible tones out and it sounded nothing like our band! Hearing this drum travesty was AFTER he said to me how good the recording was. One of the best local band demos he's been given in both master track quality and talent. So I was SHOCKED that he would just replace the drums out of habit. Regardless, I had him switch them back and asked him to just mix the drums with me and we really had a blast getting into it. Endgame was that the EP came out sounding incredible. I spent a LOT of time on my drum tuning and microphone placement and brand choices so of course I wanted to hear ME on the recording. Had it mastered there as well and with all we spent on the project, I would've been crushed if my drums weren't really captured and included on the EP.

Im cracking up about Chris comments SM81's -I HATED that mic! Here a KM84 for example and no going back At most if I had no other choice, I'd use it for bottom snare. First one I owned was a SONY ECM22p w/ the weird camera battery (not a lot of desks that far back had phantom!) And Pooch's comments about speaker technology now is SO true- I remember 35 years ago people would look at me and scoff when I used a condenser mic- "You'll never hear that in the PA." Maybe not (back then) but I could hear it on the off axis response and certainly on the board tape, in spite of cassette hiss...

Thanks guys, so much gold! Can you discuss more about overhead mic placement, are the in line with the snare or further upstage behind the drummer?
