How does MCP alt window interact with vnav? When you set an altitude there, it acts as an additional restriction to FMC directed altitude. Does it do this based on flight mode, i.e. when in climb, MCP alt is an at or below restiction and on descent, it is an at or above restriction? Or does it simply look at the MCP alt vs current alt, ie - if set below current alt , prevents descent past the setting or if set above current alt prevents climb above setting?

It simply is looking at the MCP set Altitude vs Current Altitude in relation to a constraint altitude. For example if you are at 9000 feet climbing to a Cruise Altitude of FL310 and you have a restriction to cross ABC Waypoint at FL220. You are climbing in THR REF and VNAV SPD for Thrust and Pitch Modes. ATC has told you to maintain 15,000 feet for Traffic so you set the MCP Altitude window to 15,000. This is called an Intermediate Level Off In VNAV. As the jet approaches 15,000, the altitude will capture. The FMA's will change to SPD and VNAV ALT. We are still in VNAV, but have leveled off because of setting an altitude lower than the restriction altitude, so the jet will not violate a lower set altitude on the MCP. Once clear of traffic, we can resume the climb by either setting the restriction altitude or the cruise altitude, depending on the airline SOP, and then push the Altitude selector to resume the VNAV climb...

@@andreaskjork518 Don't worry about the English, it is a 100% better than if I tried to write in your language. Yes, that is the Vertical Situation Display (VSD) on the Navigation Display (ND). You display it from the EFIS Control Panel. The MAP, PLAN, VOR, and APP has a CTR Pushbutton. When you push it once, it goes from Expanded Mode on the ND to Full Centered 360 degrees mode. If you push it again, it displays the VSD on the bottom 1/3 of the ND. The VSD is available on the 747-8...
