Hopper Bottom is definitely seasonal with high and low demand periods with the harvests throughout the year. If you get yourself a reliable broker that keeps you busy year out, the pay will average out pretty well. And with farmers and agronomy companies pushing out record yields year after year, combined with most coops expanding operations and trading amongst themselves throughout the Midwest, overall freight demand will grow with it. Also you have to look at hauling unconventional hopper bottom products like rock. Many rock loads out of a quarry are bounce rate and can pay very well with even the most modest back haul.

Wash outs, it's a given, that's not a hidden thing.. you are dealing with bulk food it's a given you have to get the trailer cleaned. If you run a reefer truck it's the same thing.. you need wash outs.. This is standard industry stuff.. I know you never did it before, but that's how the broker is gonna look at it. like you should have known.. Also he fuel.. you are always heavy with bulk.. that's why they call it bulk.. they put as much as they can in the trailer. It's always heavy.. Tanker trucks are the same. No one is paying for half a load, it's a bulk shipment method so they fill them up which equals lots of wear on the truck and lots of fuel.. The paying to get paid or what ever.. man that's going to be "every" company. It might not be the same thing you get charged for, but every single company is going to nickle and dime you out of your money. They all do it, all of them, and it's always on top of their 20-25% or whatever they charge you to lease on.. I see all the hotshot guys wanting to jump up into semis out of their hotshot trucks.. Well these are the kinds of reasons why some of us jumped out of semis into our own hot shot trucks with our own authority's.. The trucking business is a scumy business. if it's not the brokers screwing you it's the company you leased onto..You have to pick your poison.. 2 things.. #1 if you are going to lease on, find some place "stable" and stay there even if it's not perfect. (It will NEVER be perfect) The grass isn't always greener on the other side, but you will never find green grass if you don't give it time to grow... #2.. as a owner op.. leasing on to a company and paying them to dispatch you and then paying them 20-30% what ever the rate is, is you giving up full control of your business and paying them to do it.. You think any dispatcher is going to spend time looking for the best load for you when he's dispatching who knows how many other trucks? No.. he's gonna spend 10 mins and he's going to fill the loads HE needs to fill not what is BEST for you.. If you are running under some big company, and he needs to put a load on your truck.. He's not worried about what load pays the most or sets you up the best. He's looking at the loads on his board that his boss told him to get moved... Every company i going to be this same problem, none of them will run your truck the best way for YOU, but rather what is the best for them and they ALWAYS get paid before you do... That is something you are just going to have to grin and bear and accept so long as you have other people's numbers on your truck.. For now though, I highly suggest that you find someplace and make it stick.. power only is probably not gonna be it if you are not moving dedicated trailers..
@DreamInspired4 жыл бұрын
Hey David, thanks for the comment and thanks for stepping in to offer advice. You wouldn’t believe how many others just say “fuck this guy”. Thanks for offering some views here man. As for the washout, it wasn’t a hidden thing, I knew plenty about them, but I was told I would be reimbursed after sending in my receipt and invoicing for it... That didn’t happen unfortunately. My friends working for the company have their reimbursed, but they refused to pay me for it. As for power only, so far I’m doing ok with it. Still learning as I go. Did an 8 run dedicated set from Utility in VA. Been trying to see where the best money will be in this until I buy a step deck. It’s working good so far but I know it could definitely be much better. We’ll see how things go thru out this month! 👍🏻

I'm a little lost on your washout requirement; I deal with 100's of trucks a year hauling grain & dry fertilizer. all we require is for the driver to sweep out the inside of the trailer prior to loading & after unloading unless they are loading the same product repeatedly. what were you hauling that actually required you to washout?
@DreamInspired Жыл бұрын
Chicken meal, bone meal, alfalfa, apples, corn meal, etc. Had to get a wash out every single time because every load was different and we couldn’t cross contaminate. Quick that shit after 2 weeks. Broker was screwing us really bad too.

Lol I know all kinds of brokers that will pull that shit. Don't go through brokers, go direct only use a broker when you need back hauls. My trucks average 2 to 3 dollars all miles pulling hopper. Use bulkloads load board for hopper bottom. It's not that bad. Proper trip planning is key. Schedule loads in advance factoring in possible wait time, blah blah blah. I've been in hopper for 14 years.

I worked for Oakley and they are a good company to work for but you do have to stay clean shaven. No beards allowed and you have to have a spot mirror on the right side of your hood. That's about all they require but like I said they are a very good and owner operator friendly company to work for.

They also require the driver to purchase higher priced insurance

@@leeheck9109 I paid $43 a week with Oakley. That’s not high priced insurance at all. I now have my own authority and pay close to $1600 a month on Insurance. NOW THATS HIGH PRICED INSURANCE my friend.
