Seaweed was an American band from Tacoma, Washington who was active throughout the 1990s. Their style of music is a combination of various rock sub-genres, including grunge and post-hardcore.
I heard about these guys back in the mid-90s when my good buddy Bob Bikel had their CD and I heard Start With. When I started to play bass, the beginning of this song was one of the first things I figured out how to play without tablature even though it was on guitar.
I got Aaron on the Skype and this is what we talked about:
The early 90s Tacoma scene His thoughts on playing in Seattle at the time Being on Sub Pop Records Free records for life from Sub Pop Flannel shirts His thoughts on their record Spanaway The story about the green lighter on Spanaway And a ton more This starts off with us talking on his computer and then I had to call him so the audio is all over the place. And then in the middle, he had to jump off so we continued the conversation a week later.
Check out his latest band Ghost Work with members of Snapcase, Minus the Bear, and Milemarker.

The band that never left my walkman for every step of grass cutting in the neighborhood to afford a set of drums. The live show tape cover was hype

I just randomly stumbled upon this podcast and listened to the whole thing. It's great to hear that Aaron is doing well as well as getting his insight into the band's history. Story time. Buckle up. I grew up in a suburb of Tampa FL and was in high school from the fall of 1990 through June 1994. This was an exciting time for music and a wildly different time in terms of technology and life in general. There was no internet. There were no cell phones. I started to get really into music in the mid to late 1980s. I remember having GnR Appetite for Destruction and Metallica ..AJfA on cassette tape when I was about 12 or 13. CDs came out around this time and my first were INXS Kick and Living Colour Vivid. Then there was Jesus Jones Doubt, and not long after came NIN Pretty Hate Machine. My life at this time consisted of playing video games, riding skateboards, and listening to music. My world changed entirely in the fall of 1991 (I was in 10th grade) with the release of Nirvana Nevermind, which instantly became my favorite band and album. I cannot overstate the effect this album had on me as a 15 year old kid finding his place in the world. I got into a lot of other 'alternative/grunge/whatever' bands around this time, too- Pearl Jam (Ten), Soundgarden (Badmotorfinger), Alice in Chains (Dirt), Mudhoney (Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge), The Afghan Whigs (Congregation), Rage Against the Machine, etc. Finding new music was tough without the internet. Local radio played the already popular stuff, but MtV showcased 'alternative' music on a show called 120 minutes on like Sunday Nights at midnight. Around this time I became aware of Sub Pop, which had a bunch of bands that I liked at the time. This led me to finding that Nirvana had an earlier album called Bleach, but I also took a total shot in the dark at my local Camelot Music when I bought an album called Despised by a band I had never heard of called Seaweed... purely because they were on Sub Pop. Holy. Fucking. Shit. This album was AMAZING!!! I went back the next day and bought their other album, Weak, which honestly was even better. This was probably late 1992. Fast forward to the fall of 1993 and we see that Bad Religion is playing a show in downtown St Petersburg and Seaweed is opening! Oh, and another band I had never heard of called Green Day (touring for Kerplunk at this time) was also on the bill. Seaweed plays an amazing set where (if I recall correctly) they were playing some songs from Four which I think had just been released. I see them head backstage after they finish and ponder how to get back there while Green Day play their set. And as Green Day finishes and heads backstage, I catch Mike Dirnt's attention, tell him that I loved their set and that I'm a huge Seaweed fan, and he tells me to come with him. He tells the security guy that I'm a writer for a local music zine and gets me backstage with him! I actually (nervously) hung out with Seaweed and Green Day for like 30 minutes, completely star struck. I missed most of BR's set but it was worth it! I ended up seeing Seaweed several more times in Tampa, Orlando, and Atlanta over the next few years. A few times on the warped tour, a few times on their own tour, and even once as an opener for Candlebox of all bands. I wish I had kept better track of the shows since it all sort of blends together so many years later. At some point I found the original Leopard Gecko album on CD (which had a few songs that didn't make despised- Deertrap is particularly great) and I also bought Four, Spanaway, and Actions & Indications on CD right when they released. I outgrew most of the other bands I listed previously (or at least greatly reduced how often they get spun) but Seaweed has remained a constant in my music rotation ever since high school. There are just so many amazing songs that I never get tired of, so I guess I'll wrap this up with some of my favorites- Selfish, Patchwork, Inside, Recall, The Way It Ends, Bill, Squint, Losing Skin, Card Tricks, Oversight, Turnout, Free Drug Zone, Crush Us All, Saturday Nitrous, Not Saying Anything, Antilyrical, Thru The WIndow, and Let Go just off the top of my head :) I remember back in 2008 when they played at The Fest in Gainesville and I couldn't make it. I wish I would have found a way :/ Anyway, I doubt anyone will see this, but I just wanted to share my story as a Seaweed 'superfan' from about as far away as a kid in Tampa FL could have been from their origin point in Tacoma WA. I had at least a dozen Seaweed tshirts back from shows or from the Sub Pop mail order catalog- 'visualize tacoma,' motel 6 logo, etc. I just dug out my 12th grade yearbook where we took a full class picture in the football stadium stands and I'm wearing- of course- a Seaweed tshirt. Good times.

The last part of the video for “kid candy” was shot in My neighborhood and near my high school. Aarons dad was my swim coach! He was a legend too. He’s even the swim coach in my mothers yearbook from 1973!

Old Western State Mental Hospital - my favorite place to watch goth kids smoke. It was my senior year before I put together Coach Stauffer might be Aaron’s dad. I asked him if his kid was in of Seaweed. He said yes and I told I loved them. His response was “I like his [then] new band Gardener better.” Coach Stauffer was savage and gave no cares.

@@briancampbell193 I'd like to know what he thinks of The Blue Dot - which is such an exceptionally great album of songs that are truly unique and original. Maybe I'm jaded but these days, music that is just good doesn't seem like enough and I want something that doesn't sound like stuff I've heard ad nauseum. ALso the stuff that he releases on bandcamp is great too.
