There are many rifles that can shoot "long-range" but not all are created equal. In this episode, Instructor Corey talks about the different types of long-range rifles from lightweight long-range-capable hunting rifles to heavier, dedicated competition or tactical precision rifles. We often see people trying to stretch one of these types of rifles into the other's role, or buying/building rifles that try to be the "best of both worlds". As usual, there's always a tradeoff and it's on you to decide what's most important given your circumstances to get the perfect rifle. Tune in and find out what Corey believes are some of the most important aspects of a long-range rifle in terms of how it will be used.

Always great topics. It would have been nice to also add a 12ish lbs rifle to the mix.

I belong to Beloit Rifle Club and our longest range is about 500 meters. I have shot at the Auroa range at 600 meters. I have an MPA Matrix 6.5 Creedmoor with your Strike Eagle MRAD and a Ruger Precision Rifle 6MM with another Strike Eagle. I plan to use the Matrix but would like some assistance in setting up the length of pull to get a good site well so I can get a better sight picture. When is your next Intro to Long Range? I would like to sign up for the May 24th or next Long Range 1 Class. Thank you!

What would you consider a good weight (range) for a western hunting rifle. As we all know, at some point weight becomes a disadvantage for a rifle we want accurate and friendly to carry for distance while at altitude.

10 lbs and under is what we like to stay with for western hunting rifles. You will want to utilize your pack, and/or shooting sticks to better help stabilizing the rifle for longer distance shots.

@@vortexedge4492I am in the crowd of people whom have a rifle I want to use for western hunting. I would love to figure out my max effective range with my setup, as I'm sure a lot of guys would like to do before they get out west. I'm wondering if you might have an opportunity to tailor a class to new long range hunters-or vetted hunters with a new rifle to test their skills in a class with a lessor round requirement-as hunting ammo is ridiculously expensive. As most people I know do not have access to shooting ranges longer than 200 yrds. Which doesn't really a chance to adjust for wind, or just build confidence at range. Thanks-fellow WI hunter👍🏼

@@Mr.Run-n-Gun It sounds like you would be a perfect candidate for our Hunter Marksmanship course that we offer during the summer months as we will get you confirmed data out to 500yds on 10" steel. We also do multiple position shooting throughout a field course that we wrap up the course with. Check it out on our website. training.vortexedge.com/#!/service-detail?type=class&id=118386

Would something like the Boyd's Pro Varmint be a good choice for budget target stock?
@vortexedge4492
@vortexedge4492 Жыл бұрын
That's a nice looking stock and it's got the right ergonomics for target/precision shooting. It has steel recoil lugs which is a good start but it doesn't appear to have aluminum pillars or anything else more rigid like that for mounting the action so torque specs and procedures according to Boyds would be really crucial to adhere to. The fore-end of the stock looks pretty stout too but without having experience loading it up with a bipod we can't say how much it would flex and potentially touch the barrel and throw things off. For a little bit more, one could get the Magpul Hunter stock (If you have a rifle that they make one for) and those are a really great entry level option for someone shooting precision rifle. They've got all the right features and are really stout and ready for anything you throw at it. Hope this helps! - Jimmy H jchamilton@vortexoptics.com

I want to sign up for the Long Range Course 1 and possibly 2 the following day and follow up with 3 later in the year. Is setting up my rifle and sighting in my scope included on Day 1? Joe Mags

Awesome! How much long range experience do you have? Is this your first long range rifle or just another one you've added to your arsenal? Reason we ask is that if you're still newer to LR shooting and setting up the gun properly, consider our Intro to Long Range class - we'll cover fundamental marksmanship principles that will be needed in the Long Range 1, 2, and 3 classes and also setting up a long range gun properly. The expectation going into Long Range 1 and the subsequent LR classes is that students are coming with a Long Range rifle they have already setup. We'll confirm zeros and make adjustments if needed, but setting up the rifle isn't part of the curriculum in those classes. Hope this helps! Let us know if you have other questions.

Thanks for the suggestion! It's hard to have a perfect idea of exactly what you see in your mind's eye for that class, but our hunter marksmanship class is really an awesome place for hunters to hone in their marksmanship skills, build data on their guns, and practice shooting scenarios out to 500 yards!
