It’s an in-depth conversation that ranges from scenarios of which turkey to shoot, to what’s the latest research and insight on current turkey related issues. The turkey world now has many people who are concerned about habitat, population levels, nesting, and poult survival. We hope this podcast adds fuel to our listener’s desire for knowledge. I think of it just like rattlesnakes, the ones who rattle are the ones who die. Which tends to create more rattlesnakes that don’t rattle

Dr. Chamberlain is always a pleasure to listen to and his focus on the purpose of science and the importance of understanding the history and evolution of the research is critical to understanding all of nature. To Toxey’s point, Conservation sense is Common sense. As landowners and managers we can learn, through observation and awareness, what needs to be done to restore and conserve the resources provided by God! Thanks for another informational show.

Here in Alabama public land has fewer days to hunt than private land. Public must also stop hunting at 1:00pm but private can hunt all day. Is there any explanation for this in terms of conservation? I’m all for conservation but I’m having a hard time accepting different rules for public and private land, is there something I am missing?

More private land than public here in AL is all I can come up with

I don't have direct knowledge of the reasoning for this, but it makes sense to me from this perspective - Private land has a controlled number of hunters and potentially better management. Public land doesn't. So for example - someone who manages a farm for turkey habitat may have dozens of turkeys on let's say 200 acres. They might hunt it and a friend or two might also hunt it, but they don't allow any other hunters to hunt there. On public land, that same sized property is very likely not managed as meticulously, not have as many birds to begin with, and an unlimited number of hunters could be on that land pressuring and harvesting turkeys because it is open to all. Shortening the season to prevent over harvest and limit pressure on these public areas seems to make sense from that viewpoint.

I couldn’t agree more with Toxey… people love to gripe about less birds but aren’t trying to make any difference at all! We cannot rely completely on state / government resources to make a difference. The change starts with us as land owners! Get out there and start conserving. We need to change our mindset of being killers to being farmers of turkeys. Everything I do on our property is directed solely to raising poults… the killing is a by product of our labor. It’s okay to lose in this game we play… your supposed to lose. We are far to concerned about getting a dead bird on Snapchat or instagram. Get out and enjoy Gods creation… and maybe on those silent mornings, talk a while with the God of the universe who put you there. Maybe put those reaping fans down as well?
