Feeling is everything. Thanks for the comments and impression. You got me worried with the air loss on the Zipps wheels and the crosswinds concerns. I think people have to much emphasis on weight. 80% of the drag is your body so paying more is only for those with unlimited purse.

LOL yes, I often find it funny with some guys unloading thousands of dollars to shave off grams when they can easily lose 4 lbs just off the body alone. For us at enthusiast level, it also doesn't make sense to entertain wheels north of certain dollar range in my opinion. These are really sweet at price point they both come in.

I found that the leak from my 303s wheels was happening around the tubeless valve. I added a teeeny bit of kitchen silicone to the thread of the tubeless valve at the point it pokes into and out of the wheel, and that improved the seal when you threaded the nut onto the valve. It reduced the leaking to near zero

I just upgraded the wheel set on my 3yr old Pinarello Paris to the Zipp 303s with Enve SES tyres. I improved my PR hundo time by 27mins first time out. I almost felt guilty… like I was cheating or something. Went out the next day and rode another hundred miles. The Zipps are worth every penny.

I had the same issue with air leaks on my Zipps but it turned out that a bike shop had sold me the Tube type Schwalbe Pro Ones, which come in the exact same box and only have a very small "tube type" tag on them. I know its not likely to be your problem but its worth checking because I ran mine for about 5 months (and about 30 races) without realising.

Great video, one suggestion I would make is to try both wheel sets on both bikes to see if they act the same. I received my Hunt 44 Aerodynamicist set two days before seeing this vid. I'm glad I didn't see it two months ago and place an order right away, because since this review came out, Hunt dropped pricing across their entire range, and my 44 set was down to $1149. Unfortunately it's winter now in WI so these won't see any tarmac for at least 4 months, I just have to sit and drool over them until spring comes.

I have the same Zipp wheels on my Orbea. The bike came with Fulcrum wheels which really skipped sideways bin crosswinds. The Zipp feel much more benign in that respect. I’m a light rider, like you, so we feel it more than heavier riders of course. As for pressure loss, mine hold pressure fo a couple of days, I’m using Goodyear Eagle F1 28mm, which could account for some difference. I seriously considered the Hunt wheels, reports of the freehub noise, being the thing that put me off. As you say, both great wheel sets at their price point. Safe travels.

They have different hubs to the Aero 35s that I'm thinking of also buying but am having 2nd thoughts if Hunt's straight-pull free-hub body wakes the dead! I shall contact Hunt about this.

I love hookless rims. I have a set of Enve Foundation 45's, and the lower tired pressures I can run on them make a big difference for an 85kg rider like myself. It's amazing how smooth most roads are when riding at 70psi on 28mm tires, also fast. Plus they have a lifetime crash replacement warranty. I'm sure the Zipps and Hunt's are great too, just my 2 cents on hookless.

Thanks for the review. Have similar observation on 303s especially when it applies to cross winds which made me upgrade to firecrest. But I’m surprised you loose air so quickly. Also use the one pro from Schwalbe, when put on new without sealant it stayed firm 3-4 days. When riding never lost more than 1 atm between rides. Now when we have winter in Poland I again have new firecrests without sealant and it status firm for weeks

Hi Kuba. The air thing turned out to be the choice in tires. I have been using Schwalbe Pros for last 6-7 years without an issue as tubeless (25mm). But all the 28mm tires I've put on this set as well as my other sets, air leaks on all of them. Same wheels, leave the tapes as is, swap tires, leaks no more LOL. Thanks for your time!

Hi DC. Totally agree with the 303s being dangerous in cross winds. I have run these wheels in North Texas for. 2 years, tons of miles, but we have huge winds here. I’m done with riding in winds over 14 mph on these wheels. Looking at the zipp 303 firecrest. Do you think it would be more stable in the winds? What other wheels in the $2000 price range would you recommend?
@DiabeticCycling
@DiabeticCycling Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for spending the time watching and dropping a comment. While I can't comment on 303 Firecrests, I do ride on 404 Firecrests which are DEEPER. 404 Firecrests are solid in cross wind situation despite 58mm depth. Not to say the wind won't impact as physics can't be defied, but the "correction" happens quick and there's definitely better management of wind it seems. So 303 FC I suspect would perform well as they are not as deep. I have a newer episode (Ep37) where I go over 5-6 sets of wheels coincidentally in the price range you speak of. Might be something there you might find interesting. Thank you again!

i just bought the 4454 for my road bike :) gonna put my 303s on the gravel bike, i had the same problem as you with them.. loosing air way to fast and crosswinds got crazy sometimes. Yesterday I almost hit the deck like twice because of winds. I think the 303s will perform fantastic on the gravel bike but for road the hookless design/super low pressures don't feel right. Oh and the Hunt look/and sound amazing :D
@DiabeticCycling
@DiabeticCycling 2 жыл бұрын
4454, a fantastic set and bang for your money is superb. since this video, what I've found out is that the hookless nor Zipp 303s being the culprit of air not getting held. Something with the 28mm from Schwalbe, the tires aren't holding as tight as should. Putting on different tires on Zipp 303s, air is held fine. Putting Schwalbe Pro One 28mm on other wheels, they lose air. I've tried new, old, different wheels, etc and can confirm. It's a damn shame cause Schwalbe 25mm I've been using for several years are rock solid. For now, I'm running different tires on my Zipp 303s. Like mentioned, 303s roll SO GREAT but god forbid someone whistles my way, the wheels start dancing all over... Probably a good choice to put them on your gravel like you said. Happy riding Cedric and be safe out there.

Love the wheels and was thinking I would get another set when I build the next bike.Now I’m thinking if I buy a set of 54 wheels I could run 44’s, 54’s or the 44 54 combo like you have. Does that seem reasonable? Also thought I would add that I have had similar problems with my tire deflating on my Hunt wheels. Only the rear tire. For hookless wheels, tires popping off is "somewhat" of a safety problem. Understatement of the year. Regarding tire pressure limted to 73 psi, I believe this to be very conservative; the number is simply carried from ETRTO.
@danielakerman8241
@danielakerman8241 Жыл бұрын
Tires popping off have nothing to do with the hookless design. It has to do more with the internal diameter of the tire and the tolerances on the tire construction. MotoGP bikes run hookless tires, at speeds up to 300kph, and at forces that are orders of magnitude higher than those on a bicycle. When was the last time you saw a MotoGP tire pop off?

Hi Mr DC. Thanks for your video. I am looking to buy my first set of carbon wheels and definitely am considering Hunt - may not consider Zipp 303 because of apparent sensitivity to wind. Thanks.
@DiabeticCycling
@DiabeticCycling 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jack. I personally have not ridden the Wind 55s or C38 you mentioned, therefore this reply wouldn't come from actual experience. I see the 2 sets aren't far apart in weight and price. One obvious answer one would give you is to take the 55s if you mostly ride on flats and the 38 if you ride more mixed terrain. The Rovals do show slightly wider inner width which would be favored. Me personally, if I was forced to choose between the 2, and it is difficult, would be the Wind 55s. That said, anyone who owns C38 would tell you how they love those. You really couldn't go wrong with either set.

There are more differences than meets the eye. For example the spokes: Hunt has carbon and Zipp stainless steal. But the most noticeable difference will be in the ratchet ring in terms of engagement. They both equipt with a three pawl hub but Hunt has a 48 tooth ratchet ring and Zipp a 32-tooth ratchet setup. Does that translate in better accelaration or more traction uphill in favour of the Hunt 4454?
@moman6280
@moman6280 2 жыл бұрын
Probably less lag in pickup due to the immediacy of the engagement likely being better in the Hunt. Acceleration will depend on rotating mass (though we were told that the acceleration was better on the Hunts), and traction should be the same once engaged (everything else being the same).

Can you tell me more about the aero gains specifically? Is the difference between shallow aluminum wheels night and day? And is there a big difference in ride quality? And so on? Im asking about the hunt wheels
@DiabeticCycling
@DiabeticCycling 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Endeavour! Some loaded questions there. Once you step up to certain level of wheels, brands wouldn't matter whether Hunt, Zipp, Roval, Mavic etc. Your bike's ability to hold speed at above 15mph would be VASTLY noticeable between 23mm shallow box rims vs even something like 45mm rims. At speeds below 10 mph, not much difference here although small weight penalty will come in if you are climbing. But due to lack of inertia, deep section aero wheels wouldn't fare that much more terrible against shallow box rims. As to ride quality, that would be debatable depending on who you ask. I've put on bazillion miles on both alloy wheels and carbon wheels. Tires would have more impact on "ride quality" where the wheels would impact your cross wind handling, aero or not, etc. That said, wider rims would allow you for wider tires therefore better "ride quality." Such awesome questions, and I could go ramble on for another 2 hours LOL... Hope it helps and have fun out there!

Its nothing to do with the parts being cheap or _'cheaper'_ . It has everything to do with the amount of teeth on the ratchet. Search for videos of an 18T DT swiss 350 hub vs the same hub with a 48T or 60T upgrade. The more teeth there is. The noisier the hub is.
@lukecico5155
@lukecico5155 8 ай бұрын
I thought it had to do more with ratchet vs pawl hub systems. The hunts have, like, 7 deg engagement which probably implies a lot of teeth. I think with the pawl based system it’s the design of the pawls and springs that make all the racket. No expert here, I confess. I was saying it gives the perception of an inferior system not that it necessarily is. I have another wheel set with DT Swiss 240. They purr like a happy kitten.

@@Rose.Of.HizakiSo you're saying that Chris King and Industry Nine that are known to be super loud have a ton of teeth? So what about Onyx that makes a hub with the most teeth possible and is quiet - 0 noise w/ instant engagement. You can't hear it. They made it sound-less. Gotta love road bikers online that rally know what they're talking about. 😂😂😂 P.S. It's the engagement spring system that makes the 'clanking' against the teeth loud or quiet. (In laymen terms)

@@bernardo9202 This is absolutely a correct statement in terms of aero I believe. The front wheel being aero has more impact than the rear. As to why wheel manufacturers put out slightly shallower depth up front, this I do not know for sure. I would have to guess they do this for stability in cross wind condition. Having deep and/or deeper front wheel profile would subject you to more cross wind volatility. I guess they find happy medium by giving you slightly less aero wheel up front despite the aerodynamics would suggest bigger gain would be had by having more aero wheel up front. Although for TT and Tri, they do put more aero disc wheel in rear, too... I may be talking about of my ass so take with grain of salt XD
