Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Welcome to the Dark History podcast. Today, we are going to talk about Gay Conversion Therapy, an abusive practice where bad science and extreme religious views created hell on Earth for hundreds of thousands of people in the LGBTQ+ communities. And it continues to this day.
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more dark history.
You can find Dark History podcast on Apple, Spotify, wherever you listen to your podcasts, and every Thursday here on my KZfaq for the visual side of things.

I've always wondered the age old question if if the religious had a way of knowing that the fetus they carried inside their body would grow up to be a homosexual, would they then make an exception for abortion? Is tough decisions sitting from a lofty holier than now perch.

As a historian I feel so thrilled that formats like this is reaching mass audience. History is not just dates, battles, elections but also microscopic view to the everyday life, cultural context that impacts us till this day. As an European I would love to hear more international stories, but I get it - target audience is US. Keep it up! 👌

I was at one of these places in 2010. I was 15. After I got out, I ran away from home in 2011 and came to Los Angeles from the state of Texas. I had nothing but time to think about the person and woman I wanted to be. I was able to start my transition and hormones and now I'm a 26 year old trans woman. No Matter what I refused to let my family and these people break me. I couldn't change. I was meant to be a woman and I had to fight to be the woman I am today

When my mom suggested I go to "therapy" so I don't have to live as a trans person, and so I could accept the gender I was born with, I had to try really hard not to get upset with her because I know she doesn't know what she's doing and the damage it would cause me. I'm an adult now and I don't live with my parents. This is exactly why I didn't come out to them until I was financially stable. I tried everything for years to change who I am on my own, so I'm very sure that no amount of therapy or convincing could make me what they want. If there are any kids out there who might be reading this, please be careful and patient about when you choose to come out. I know it's hard, but you're stronger than you realize.

My daughter came out to me when she was 13 and couldn't love her more. My ex told her it was just a phase and she shut down (he was my ex for a reason). My baby had issues not only being bi but being multiracial, female, not black enough, not Hispanic enough, hair texture, etc. Not understanding and my being who she wanted to be. It was so heartbreaking watching her go through the things she went through. One thing is I have always been her safe space and have truly became a safe space for her friends who are a mix of everything. I love them all. It amazes me how parents just disregard their kids...I can't understand this. If anyone needs a safe space, please reach out...I am here. Thanks so much for this Bailey💜💜 You are truly awesome!!

My father has been an educator all his life. He's now 93 and I still ask about things I have forgotten since school. But, one of the things he always said was, the day you stop wanting to learn new things, you might as well dig a hole, jump in, and pull the dirt back in on top of you. That seems to fit in this thread, don't you think.

When I see a movie or TV program reference to something that is of historical importance, I look it up. When I want to make a period style dress, I do my research. (I used to be a stage costume designer.) Spinning yarn, making lace, knitting, quilting, before doing them, I watch and learn and read. When taking on a stage role I read about the time frame, learned popular fads and styles, developed period mannerisms.

MySpace was so much better than what we have now. I loved being able to change my background and the song playing whenever I wanted. We’re all mad here 🎩. I remember Zack’s story, or at least part of it. The only thing the parents seemed to fail on is not excepting their son for who he is/was. That’s so sad that someone may be afraid to come out and let the world see who they really are but their biggest gut wrenching realization is to find out the people who are supposed to love you unconditionally are the ones you now have to worry about.

Any and all adults complicit in this horrific crime need to be exposed, and if still living, prosecuted. From the top of the government down to the ones who snatched these precious children out of their mothers’ arms. The people in power now should make it a top priority to identify as many of these children as possible and have their remains returned to their families.

For real though a lot of "Christian" peer groups think like these people that agree with conversion therapy and it's scary. I remember going through high school (Catholic High school) and staying in the closet for two major reasons; the school acted like bullying towards out or flamboyant students didn't happen since the teachers didn't like the out or flamboyant students for living their truth, and two the school included conversion therapy hotlines among the lists of "youth help lines" they gave us so people where legit afraid they'd end up in one of those places. There is a major sense of almost culture shock when you go from these over conservative high schools into post secondary schools where all of a sudden you have advocacy groups and visibility everywhere.

Hi, I'm bi too. As a dancer, (exotic) years ago, you look like a waitress I had a severe crush on. I can't stand people who give you the idea that they're interested in maybe talking to you, but don't give a clue though, you know what I mean? She was like that.☺️

Thank you so much for making this video, Bailey. I haven’t finished the full video yet but I HAD to leave a comment thanking you endlessly for this. In Canada, conversion therapy was only outlawed as of January 7th, 2022….. I’ve had friends, partners, partners of friends, etc who have experienced these horrors first hand and it honestly breaks me that this was ever allowed. Thank you for shedding light on such a dark part of LGBTQIA+ history that not many know about.

I have a suggestion for Dark History, the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston WVA. My sister and I went ghost hunting last month and we didn’t receive a lot of the history of the place. You and your wonderful crew could dig up a lot more I am sure! Love all that you do!

I found history so boring in school. I’ve learned a lot more as an adult than then. And then learned truths that I wasn’t ever taught. I’m really enjoying these videos. Also conversion therapy is abuse.

Side note: I’m a Christian. And I stand by my statement that conversion therapy is abuse. These people who send their kids to be tortured are horrible. No one is going to listen to anyone who preaches hate. Jesus said to love. So that’s what I try to do. Though people like Chris Watts make that difficult, but that’s a different topic.

I know. How do we convince parents that they've been brainwashed and need to change their own ways, not their kids?
@christel3742

@@Himaryous honestly, I’m shocked that it’s even recommended in churches. I started going to church when I was 6, and no one ever said anything about it while I was growing up. We learned how to act and live a Christian lifestyle-not how to judge others. It’s so bizarre to me.

fr, darkmatter2525 made a great video on it. Someone in the comments said nobody is punished by death for eating shellfish or wearing jeans, so why would christians take an old passage from a similar spot and make the same case?
