We’re off to Sint Maarten to get our standing rigging replaced and to pick up our new AB RIB!
Over the years our old Avon 3.1 Hypalon RIB suffered a multitude of problems, but by far the two most serious were having the rubber coating of the Hypalon fabric delaminate from the canvas substrate below, and a constant and unrepairable leak between the upper and lower fiberglass shell, which would add increasing amounts of weight to the RIB unless hauled and drained regularly.
At root, it was time for a new RIB. And for this we chose Outdoor World in Dutch Sint Maarten, who were the local AB and Yamaha dealers.
Hope you enjoy!

We just retired our AER Marine 320 fibreglass RIB and 20 HP 4 stroke Honda. Our new RIB is a 310 Highfield with a 15HP 2 stroke. We went from 500lbs (220kg) of weight down to around 200lbs.(90kg). Had the last set up for 12 years and found this is the life span of a PVC RIB. We are in Asia where 2 strokes rule. Glad to have lost the weight and getting on the plan isnt an issue anymore.

Yep. This balance of weight and power is the issue a lot of cruisers face, and it's easy to go wrong. I think planing plates are an interesting concept too. It's my feeling that they aren't included with stock engines because they can easily cause overpowered RIBs to rise completely out of the water, riding like a foiling board on the lower unit of the engine alone, then wildly going out of control. But for situations where it's hard to get on plane, they might be a great addition. I'm thinking of buying a set in the off season to find out.

Now you've got that nice Oyster all kitted out and raring to go, why not do a long, adventurous cruise to somewhere like Patagonia...leave all the marinas, bars, clubs and restaurants behind for a while? That's what the 485 is designed for...

“The duty-free status of the island shines. Especially outboard engines and dinghies can be bought in St. Maarten for a fraction of stateside prices.” Do you agree with this statement I found online?
@SailingTalisman
@SailingTalisman Жыл бұрын
Yes, duty free is fine, and we're happy to take advantage. But not exactly sure how it stands against the USA. You'd have to get pricing in the US to compare, which we didn't. Of course for us, we were in the Islands, so had to do what we could. If I had to buy today, I'd take a Yamaha 30hp 2-stroke. But know that fuel economy on the 2-strokes is less than you get with the four strokes, so having to fill up a lot more.

Great to see you again and thank you for the nice review. We are preparing to replace our 1998 10.5 ft. Nouvarania. We will keep our 25 hp Mercury 2-stroke. We were seriously considering a Highfield but your points regarding weight effecting the ride were excellent and something we hadn't factored in. Your review has caused us to pause and re-evaluate our decision. Do you have an opinion on hypalon versus pvc?
@SailingTalisman
@SailingTalisman Жыл бұрын
Hi CV. Hypalon is the only option. PVC breaks down a lot faster I'm told, and all the top-end RIBs use that fabric. With a 25hp 2-atroke, you should never have a problem planing, even with guests.

funny how Zodiac used to be a thing but AB is the way to go today __/))
@SailingTalisman
@SailingTalisman Жыл бұрын
Yeah, Zodiac seems to focus on military stuff these days. I'd say AB and Highfield are the two biggest brands in the cruising and charter markets. Plus there's no looking past the increases in quality of the base Hypalon material. Dillan even remarked on the Orca Hypalon that's used by AB, which is remarkably scuff resistant and tough.

Did you buy the new engine? The new dinghy is a real beauty. Definitely put the fuel tank in the front compartment and run the line to the back.
@SailingTalisman
@SailingTalisman Жыл бұрын
Hi Tom. No, we're happy with the Suzuki. The bow locker is a nice option for fuel, but it's more useful for the dinghy inflation pump and other items. Unlike the old Avon, it's quite dry, and a good place for Wendy to put her purse or store items you want to keep dry. Our tank is 20L (which is way too big), and we keep a spare 1Gal tank in case we run out, or to help others out if they're stuck dead in the water.
@tomwilliams8675
@tomwilliams8675 Жыл бұрын
@Sailing Talisman That's a large fuel tank. I didn't realize. I couldn't tell which way you were leaning on the test drive. My wife and I just came back from our first time to Tortola BVI, 3 weeks ago. That is a beautiful island. Great to see you guys again.
@SailingTalisman
@SailingTalisman Жыл бұрын
@@tomwilliams8675 Tortola is amazing, but the rest of the small islands that surround it are what make the BVIs the number one charter market in the world, with Ionian Greece and Phuket, Thailand also in the mix. Charter a cat or monohull, professionally crewed if needed, next time you go. Your world will be rocked.

I was thinking about getting a very used aluminum inflatable dinghy with old tubs and use those tubes as a pattern to make new Hypalon tubes to save money. I'd prefer to get a 2 stroke and you brought up a great point about the weight. Since the weight is doubled, can you get a 40 or 50 2 stroke and still be legal?
@SailingTalisman
@SailingTalisman Жыл бұрын
The place where I'd be concerned is in the gluing process. Although I've attempted numerous repairs, I've rarely had them be to the level of a professional assembly. I don't know how they do it, but there are some secrets and tricks out there that make all the difference. 40 or 50 would be too big. 15 or 20 would be more like it, and 2-stroke 15's are all over the place. We had one before we got the Suzuki and it was great.
@robertlaird6746
@robertlaird6746 Жыл бұрын
@@SailingTalisman My question is more on the line of it being legal according to the sticker on the boat and the US Coast Guard? Will you get pulled over and given a ticket in other words?
@SailingTalisman
@SailingTalisman Жыл бұрын
@@robertlaird6746 I think you'd be best to check w/ USCG regulations. But I've never heard of anyone being hassled over an outboard. They seem more interested in having life vests and proper lighting at night. Importation of a new outboard by having it shipped in (new in box) might be an issue with Customs, but a used one aboard a sailing vessel, probably not.
@MRMV483

so did you buy the 25 Yamaha?
@SailingTalisman
@SailingTalisman Жыл бұрын
No, we're happy with our Suzuki. The Yamaha 25 was marginally more powerful, but so too would be a Suzuki 25. I do have to say that Yamaha dominates the outboard market in the US and Caribbean, but was less easy to find when we were in Greece and in need a new motor. Either way, these are workhorses that last for many years if properly cared for.

@@SailingTalisman definitely! I have 2 4stroke 8hp Yamaha,: one from 2002 and one from 2010 and they have been dead reliable, one for my dinghy and one is on my riverboat which is quite heavy weighing over 1400kg loaded with 8 people, but she always gets the job done😂
