An examination of the origins and value of the Real Fake Book and then moving to a breakdown of a real book chart and how these charts relate to the various approaches the guitarist can take in developing these. Ultimately of course we want to make music and we cover how a simple RB chart Is a valuable source of much of the standard jazz repertoire.
Also, we consider different musical contexts such as solo guitar, guitar with bass, guitar with bass and melody instrument, guitar quartet, etc., and how they relate to the essential elements of music namely, rhythm, melody, harmony, and form.
I should also mention that there are Real Books written in different keys, for instance, an Alto is in Eb and a Tenor is in Bb and a Trumpet is also in Bb. Gaining insight into how to use a Real Book might open up doors to beginning your own small group, which beats Netflix by a long shot.

"Musician", that's a profound word and you may be the first comment to use it. Pablo Casals was once insulted when an interviewer called him a Cellist, Pablo retorted: I am NOT a "cellist", I am a musician! An architect friend once said to me after hearing an album I produced - I get it, you're a journeyman musician. Now that's a compliment. Really glad you have found some value here, best to you musical person. L

Thanks Lloyd for giving understanding of the value and use of the Real Book. What Volume would you recommend to get started with; 1 - 6 ?

Good Day, The volumes overlap a little bit with content but you will find most of the relevant standards in every volume. I have seen some very old ones that are loaded with hard to find tunes but these are difficult to find. I think to get started just pick one up that has some repertoire you are familiar with. An effective way to learn is to begin by memorizing the changes and be able to get through in time, from there learn the melody, be able to sing the melody. Glad you found value in the video, best to you. L
