Spectacular granite spires, buffalo, wild burros, coyotes, great hikes, and more make Custer State Park in South Dakota's famed Black Hills an RV travelers' perennial favorite destination. Join us for a week of sightseeing, kayaking, hiking and more, including nearby Wind Cave National Park and a glimpse at nearby Mount Rushmore, all leading up to the State Park's annual Buffalo Roundup where cowboys push a herd of up to 1,300 bison across the prairie grasslands in front of up to 20,000 spectators. It's a true taste of the Old West!

ABOUT US
Welcome to Grand Adventure, a KZfaq channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, always filmed in stunning 4K.
We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the western U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and dog Zoe are avid boondockers, so you'll seldom find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds. Instead, we're usually camped in some of the most remote and beautiful spots that you could ever pull a travel trailer into. And unlike most other RV channels on KZfaq, we're not RV dealers or full-timers -- we're "long-timers" who tend to hit the road for weeks or months at a time, while maintaining a sticks-and-bricks home in Utah.
We'll provide beautiful travel videos, as well as some tips and insight on trip planning, and equipping and maintaining your RV to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember...life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!

Can’t get enough of that area, it’s almost enough to forgive the hail storms! Can’t wait to get out there next summer. -Dave
@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure 3 жыл бұрын
We hear ya about the hailstorms, Dave. Back in June 2018 in that area we experienced some of the worst severe weather that we ever have outside of a hurricane, including big hail. After we left the area we kept watching the weather and that just seemed to be a magnet for severe weather all summer. This time, fortunately, the weather remained tranquil throughout our visit.

The last time I was in South Dakota was in the mid 80’s. I remember that it had cool scenery. I don’t remember the Needles Highway - so I must have missed it. 😟 I do remember seeing Mount Rushmore, but definitely not the view of Washington that you showed. That was a cool shot! Your kayaking ride was great! Sylvan Lake looked like a great place for it. Thank you for the camera placement on the boat. One really feels like they are riding in the boat with you - except you are doing all the work! Thanks!! 😉 It was an enjoyable ride. Poor starving burros.... The Buffalo(bison) Roundup was pretty neat and definitely would be something to experience. South Dakota has always been one of my favorite states and I would say that this has been one of my favorite videos! 👍🏼👍🏽 Thanks for sharing Marc. Ram

Mark, we met a couple at Oktoberfest in Deadwood. They invited us to their boondocking site just past the Friendship Tower. Two miles up Mount Roosevelt Rd. It's a dirt road. Bare left after the parking lot for the Friendship Tower. The views were AMAZING on top of a hill overlooking Deadwood. Look for it if you ever get back this way.

Love your style! I felt like I was there. We had reservations at custer state park to go to Buffalo roundup this year but a diagnosis of breast cancer foiled our plans. Next year! Lord willing and the creeks don’t rise! They expect a full recovery is the good news. Loved staying in the cabins at Sylvan Lake one year. The hike around the lake is adventurous and fun! Thanks for the beautiful paddle! 🤩🤩 We have frequented the area going to Sturgis for many many many years. 🏍.

As always, so much great information and beautiful cinematography. I don’t think our dually can make it on Needles Highway. 😂. What an amazing area to hike. Larry would love to do some rock climbing but I’d say no to that. I see some fall colors. I miss that now that we are back in Florida. Another scary road? We definitely need a small follow behind car. I’ve never been to Mount Rushmore. Pretty cool you saw George’s profile. Perfect time to see the round up- it’s worth it not to boondock. That campground looks nice for a really affordable price. It just doesn’t look like much privacy between sites. But what a view! Love your drone footage. Did I see Jalapeño pie in that restaurant in Custer? 🤔 Love those statues. Wow. Amazing art work. Outlooks are some of my favorites. Wow. That wildlife drive is really great. Those burrows definitely slowed down traffic 🤣. I don’t think I would like them shoving their noses in. It’s so wild to see Buffalo on roads. I’m not a fan of first come camping. It makes me too anxious. Wow. What a great place to kayak. Where does that bridge over the lake start? Those rocks remind me of our trip in Canada. 4:30am? I think Larry could go hold a spot for me. Larry says those are some serious pancakes 🥞 and for a good cause. They shouldn’t use cars- kind of ruins the roundup. This round up is now on our bucket list. ❤️ Loved this. Thanks. See you next time. Alice and Larry
@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your observations, Alice! The bridge you saw at Sylvan Lake is just crossing a very small dam at the downstream end of the lake. Yes, that was jalapeno pie. And you let Larry know that when he's ready to go climbing he's got a partner available! 😉

Great video. The burro's history is interesting. They were originally used as pack animals for tourists to ride to the top of Harney Peak, now Black Elk Peak. When that operation ended, the burros were released into the wild in the state park. A couple years ago we lost a few to a wildfire that plowed through half of the state park. We love seeing them when we play in the park. We usually try to remember to bring them a snack.

Thank you as always! The funny thing about that coffee, we were already well acquainted with Cafe Bustelo from when we used to live in Florida. However, the reason we had it on this trip was we needed coffee one day when the only store in town was a Dollar General, and that was the only thing they had that wasn't Folgers. 😄

Thank you Mike! Appreciate your comments, kind words and feedback. I've flown a drone while driving with another KZfaqr out in the Utah desert, and another time near Grand Targhee with another Alta skier driving; however, doing so on a regular basis would require having Mrs. Grand Adventure drive the tow vehicle and trailer while I pilot the drone from the passenger seat, and she needs a bit more towing experience before we try to pull that off. Our merch store is set up on Teespring teespring.com/stores/grandadventure and we also have a Grand Adventure Shop on Amazon www.amazon.com/shop/GrandAdventure that showcases products that we use ourselves to produce Grand Adventure. Hope this helps!

This is so great! I appreciate the drone shots of the campground and the “guided tour” you always take us on. The Buffalo statues are gorgeous works of art. Thanks for including art in your video...as you almost always do! Perfect music for the area too. Excellent videography and info. Makes us want to jump in the truck and drag our little vintage RV to the black hills NOW. I guess things close up end of Sept? Are campgrounds still open? Is snow likely later in the year?
@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure 3 жыл бұрын
Snow had already happened, a few inches of it in mid-September before our arrival. Yes, things pretty much close down for camping in the Black Hills by late September. However, if you wanted to visit the area outside of season, Rapid City is just a hop, skip and a jump away. So glad that you enjoyed the video, thanks so much for your comment! It was great to see you at the premiere last night.

Thanks for the feedback. FWIW, the park had no idea that we were filming -- we never told them ahead of time. Our audience is primarily composed of RV travelers who want to see the camping. We therefore do a segment on the camping in each video, even if we're boondocking for free on public land.
