Part 1 of this two-part conversation with Rip Esselstyn and the iconic Jon Stewart and his wife Tracey. Hear what happened when Tracey leapt from being vegan to whole food, plant-based, Jon's hilarious take on the transition process, and the charming story of how they met. These two are working to raise awareness about the benefits of eating plants and the sanctity of protecting animals-to me, that's the true definition of a hero.

ericphunt He was just the best ever. I loved his show and loved his causes. I will say the last few times I’ve seen him in interviews etc he just doesn’t look well at all. Am I the only one who thinks so? Maybe he’s just lost some extra weight from being plant base but he looks a good 15 years older than his age. I’m not hating or anything. Just an observation.

Stewart -- "It's clear that something sinister has occurred in the American diet over the last 40 or 50 years." Absolutely right! TV Dinners are CRAP! Candy Bars are CRAP! Fast Food is CRAP! All those little packaged "snacks" for kids' lunches. "Wonder Bread!?" On and on. And very few here are commenting on the actual topic of discussion. Everyone seems intent upon simply fawning over a missed celebrity personality, albeit one of the finer minds American TV has to offer. One commenter who actually addresses the topic speaks to immediately missing "brisket" upon going vegetarian, as though really lacking any will to stay with a healthy diet. Lots of distractions, avoiding the point, seemingly few opinions of much depth in the average American's comment, at least in this forum. In Europe, generally they follow an age old healthy diet and they respect getting an education. America seems lost, hopefully not a lost cause, but I am worried. Now watch for the detractors to this comment. "Something sinister" says Stewart.

Reminds me of my own relationship except I keep my wife laughing to deflect away from the fact she is a far, far better human being than I! We are vegetarians, aspiring vegans (not concerned about a healthier heart as according to my wife I don't have one!) interested in opening a animal rescue retreat on our small farm though fearful of large vet bills. Shame there isn't some kind of Obama Llama health care for animals up here in Canada though can't imagine our animals having it better! Hopefully in my next life coming back as my wife's dog!

If you drink milk then just use plant milk. There's tons of vegan cheeses out there. Rip has a really good whole food chickpea cheese recipe. I tried it and it was so good, I ate it every day for lunch for two weeks. XD If it's eggs you struggle to give up, there's egg replacers. Or just do what I do and have a potato scramble instead of an egg scramble. If you need more motivation then understand dairy cows have bovine AIDS and leukemia. They are also infected with mastitis and FOUR different types of strep. All those diseases gets into the milk and put into your body which explains why I got strep so much as a kid. 1997 - FDA bans whole cows from being fed to cows. However, it’s still legal to feed blood, bone, and cow scraps from restaurants to cows. You can also legally feed pigs, chickens, and horses to cows too. 2008 - FDA tightens regulations for all animal feeds and states it is no longer legal to feed cows to other animals if: 1) It’s positive with mad cow disease. 2) The brains and spinal cords of cattle 30 months of age and older need to be removed. 3) The entire carcass of cattle not inspected and passed for human consumption that are 30 months of age or older from which brains and spinal cords were not effectively removed or otherwise effectively excluded from animal feed. Cattle not inspected and passed for human consumption means cattle that did not pass antemortem inspection by the appropriate regulatory authority. This term includes nonambulatory disabled cattle. Nonambulatory disabled cattle are cattle that cannot rise from a recumbent position or that cannot walk, including, but not limited to, those with broken appendages, severed tendons or ligaments, nerve paralysis, fractured vertebral column, or metabolic conditions. It’s still legal to feed cows: scraps from restaurants, pigs, horses, and chickens. Cows that die of disease before 30 months old (as long as it wasn’t from mad cow disease) can still be fed to other animals. So a chicken that was fed diseased cow meat could then be fed to a cow. www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/cfcfr/CFRSearch.cfm?CFRPart=589&showFR=1 So those chicken eggs were likely derived from a chicken that was fed a diseased cow or pig. Look up the channel "Thee Burger Dude" with 2 E's. If you're not that concerned with health then his channel will be perfect for you. He shows you how to make vegan mac and cheese and Big Macs and Wendy's spicy chicken burgers and all kinds of crazy delicious stuff.

I want to say one thing here. I'm sure it's not going to be popular however I begin....Any diet, whether it be meat based, vegetarian, vegan, etc, that eliminates sugar, chemicals, hydrogenated oils, factory farmed animals, etc etc, will ALWAYS make and keep one healthier, hands down. It doesn't matter if you eat meat or just vegetables, as long as all your foods are clean and organic, you're GOING to be more fit and healthier than you would be eating diseased, processed, flavor enhanced, sugared up food items. I've not seen one single individual who got extra healthy eliminating meat, and that includes myself. So eat a vegan or vegetarian or raw food or whatever floats your boat diet. Just eliminate anything that is not a real food item that isn't grown with poison. Period.
@carl13579
@carl13579 4 жыл бұрын
The science doesn't back this up. Over the long term, meat has negative effects on the human body (unless you only eat it extremely rarely, as can be found in most of the blue zones). The science also doesn't back up the organic thing - it might be true, but it hasn't yet been proven either way. (And some non-organic foods have more pesticide residue/are harder to clean than others.)

Think about the “process/machine” animals are to create the meat that gets to a table. Meat is processed by the animal full of their hormones. You can’t drink a Coke and only consume the water. The whole everything in “ moderation” has been around a long time and clearly isn’t working. Sorry, I’m an animal lover not an animal eater. I respectfully disagree with you.
@hew195050
@hew195050 4 жыл бұрын
InSpiteOfBecauseOf I’m not speaking of industrially farmed animals. I’m talking about humane loving caring farms who respect the animals rights to roam around and live happy lives. I wouldn’t eat anything that was raised in hell. That said my point was ANY dirty food that’s been tampered with , genetically modified etc will make anyone sick, that includes your vegetables. Also that said, I only eat fish myself. I have no taste for chicken, beef, pork etc. But I defend others rights to have it.

The sugar industry..Is one of the problems but politics comes into play. The are many products on the market that have added sugar that is unneeded. I have a 9 year old nephew that has never had a hot meal in his life along with a vegetable he won't even eat pizzia !!. It's all chips, milk, kids gogurt, ton of sugar there. peanut butter. Sometimes ham (cold cuts), and the kid lunches. Thinking back when I was his age spam was my only hard sell with my dad .. But after drenching it in Ketchup got it down. Granted he didn't have the benefit of a dad who was around and his grandma wasn't about to get into a fight with him. But still. He's always hungry though, for the junk.

I can remember my mom getting a job and being able to afford tv dinners in the aluminum trays. It was sold to us as convienence, but it's all so full of salt, sugar, and preservatives its hurt Americans. Growing your own food is how most people (my grandparents) survived. They bought coffee and sugar for the most part. I live rurally but can no longer grow my food. I know I'm a chickenshit because if I actually had to slaughter, that's the term used, an animal I would 100% be a vegetarian. But that's me. I love the way she talks about her critters, too cute.

Pete, our blue heeler, border collie mix died as he turned eight. Of numerous cancers. We were able to extend his life for a while using CBD oil and other natural cures. He ate a marvelous diet of home prepared meals and high-dollar kibble, but cancer doesn't care. The kibbles on the market are deadly, no matter how much you pay. We fed plant based diets to several of our rescue dogs (the best, the ONLY kind of pet to adopt) and it did not fare well. I will ck into the dog food Wild Earth. ---- Okay, just saw the ingredients on the website. Nope, thank you very much but peas, potatoes, and canola oil are known source for creating diabetes and heart disease, even in the blend Wild Earth is using. I'm very disappointed. Still waiting on a dog food that is GOOD for our pups.

Cat food -I didn't want a cat but he is a rescue cat. People, including a lot of new vegans, really don't understand the meaning of the word 'vegan' as coined by Englishman Donald Watson […] a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude-as far as is possible and practicable-all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans, animals and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals.

I appreciate their good intentions and understand wanting to avoid all harm to animals 100%, believe me - I've been there. Stuck to it years longer than I should have, ignoring my deteriorating health too.. It's pretty clear this diet does nothing for Jon, he looked amazing just a few years ago and now he looks like a tired, gaunt elderly man. It's good to do what we can but not at the expense of our own health.

It's appropriate that John is plant-based considering what a big fan of George Carlin he is, and one of my favorite Carlin jokes is the "chickens are decent people" one kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sNunqdlps7DRko0.html

I remember Jon on TV late night and thought he was so different from the rest of the comics at that time. I thought he had funny but he stopped me more on his intelligence of man kind and what is right to be kind... He is a good guy and now that i meet his lovely wife on this Plantstrong Engine 2 show,,, she has a heart of care for the little creatures of this world... Tracys attitude is why not care for the ones who cannot speak for the life they want... as they are like us humans,,, live free without the dangers of hurt....

The tough part of all this is that most of us will never be able to afford to eat this way. I am amazed at how much fruits and vegetables compared to rice a Roni or a loaf of white bread.

I work at a Lifestyle Medicine clinic and this is what we tell patients when they have that argument: "Would you rather spend extra money for good food to keep you healthy or spend that extra money on medications and healthcare for yourself?" One way or another, you'll be spending the money. It may not be now, but it will be in the future after eating the standard American diet. Personally, I'd rather spend the extra money on real food and not on healthcare later in my life. Just my two cents...

It can be quite affordable. Load up on brown rice, potatoes, and dry beans. Use frozen veggies if fresh are expensive. Have oats for breakfast. This stuff is so cheap you can add some fresh in-season fruits and veggies.

Its more about what you leave out of your diet than what you leave in. Focus on complex carbs first, beans, rice, quinoa, millet, barley, oats.. add some soy products, nuts. then some fruits and vegetables. Avoid refined flour products. Whole foods plant based is IMHO not maintainable you get too thin start with energy then supplement with vegetables. I could never eat brocolli everyday. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i-BmhsJnrKjNqoE.html
