This is so cool, it reminds me of the 60's & 70's when young people (hippies) would take old delivery vans and strike off to have the time of their lives. When I first saw ST0DIG I was hooked! I would love to do this in the Gulf of Thailand! Have fun and please keep making videos of your progress!

Great videos! I enjoy watching this video progression including the ideas of what to think about when purchasing something like a lifeboat. Now I have a much better idea of what I want to do with a boat and one huge advantage with these is that they're designed to remain upright even in a stormy ocean.

Well, when you go electric, at least you can use the whole upper area for solar cells. :-) Probably sufficient to run it continuously when you use a modest electric motor.

Please....live with the Bukh for a while before you drop money and time on electric. Spend a little time and a few dollars on insulation and isolation first. A lot of the noise is due to empty and reflective interior. Hope it all works out for you.

Great idea overhaling a life boat and a great way to recycle as well. While going full electric that can be a bit on the tricky side leaving the question of going full solar in which case there is a new coating for boats that I've recently heard about that is like a solar wrap for electric solar boats that is applied to the upper part of the hull being the deck area and converting the entire deck in to one large solar panel. in your case that might be the smart way to go depending one the layout of your portholes or windows. f course if you used a small generator as a back up to your solar that could be incorporated as well by building a sound proof box around the generator itself to cut down on any noise it might make. either way one thing to keep in mind solar only works as it should when the sun shine on it. and being in BC you don't get a lot of sun. So keeping a back up generator is a good idea. as my grandmother used to say never keep all your eggs in the same basket. I look forward to wanting the build of your new dingy.

The reason for buying & restoring a lifeboat is for the rollover / self-righting that many lifeboats have because they are fully ENCLOSED! Unfortunately, these folks bought none of these advantages.
@archangel200313 жыл бұрын
The life boat aspect was destroyed by cutting the sides out!
@RandomButtonPusher3 жыл бұрын
They didn't cut them out. That model is made that way, with the canvas roll-down covers. This isn't the type that plunges off an oil platform or giant cargo ship.

They pack drinks but don't consume them because they don't want to stop and use the bathroom? Genius couple! (Sarcasm) Let me guess, they bought the boat, but didn't put it in the water because they didn't want to get it wet!
@andeefoster95683 жыл бұрын
Or it’s not in the water because they’re doing a total rebuild of it to LIVE IN, thus losing the “lifeboat”aspect of it? Clearly your welding hobby isn’t giving you enough to do when you’re leaving multiple, mostly incoherent comments on a stranger’s KZfaq channel.

Hi guys, do you think the stock engine and gear .. including the exhaust system .. would hold up to normal everyday use? Thanks, Bill.
@LivingOnALifeboat Жыл бұрын
The engines in these are great-it was a Bukh 36 and Bukh engines are one of the only true marine engines as opposed to a marinized tractor engine. Unless it has seen salt water or something after coming out of service they tend to be excellent engines with low hours and good maintenance! If we hadn’t been so determined to go electric we wouldn’t have thought twice about keeping it. I would say you want to do some muffling or something though-they were were straight stack dry cooled engines with zero insulation or anything; it’s pretty loud! But I mean it would probably work fine, just be unpleasant.
@hearsejr Жыл бұрын
@@LivingOnALifeboat thanks I appreciate the ingo. My is to build a house boat and box in and add sound proofing, and ventalate the box, then want to add a keel cooling system like the old fishing trawler I used to work on. I also would add some portholes. I was not sure if the engines would hold up beings it seems these boats were designed to be used on a daily basis, but they have so much potential. If I did not plan on moving long distances and leaving begore day light on some mornings and not arriving toll just after dark in an anchorage or a slip, and my bank account was a little better off, I would go electric.
