We're finally back on the road for our first camping season as full-time RVers! After leaving our winter campsite in Salt Lake City, our first stop is boondocking in the central San Rafael Swell of central Utah with our friends Ed and Anne of the KZfaq channel ‪@EddieAtLarge‬ along with their friend Jackie. This is an incredibly remote area, where the nearest supermarket is 85 miles one-way and the nearest gas station is 60 miles away round-trip. While relaxing at camp we also explore the natural beauty of the area including ancient pictographs 4,000 to 6,000 years old, a beautiful natural sandstone arch, and Swaseys Cabin built by cattlemen and horse wranglers 100 years ago.

Thank you! This type of video is also the type that we much prefer creating. Our chosen type of RV lifestyle, where we're stationary in the RV for the winter means that it's impossible for us to create these travel videos during that stationary period. We're very happy to now have an entire season of these travel episodes ahead of us.

This is a grand place and well worth the effort to get there. The sunsets are spectacular. Quiet and peaceful with vistas that go on forever. If you are a "first-timer" in this area do be aware that the area can experience some seriously high winds in early to late Spring so be prepared! Not the most pleasant experience then, been there, done that. The east bound descent off the Swell on I-70 has some steep grades and turns so make sure your brakes are in good order. Be sure to watch Marc's videos on Goblin Valley and Little Horse Canyon hikes too! They are great. Thanks again Marc for your excellent shows!

Thank you Thom! Very true about the wind, that's great advice. While here we did drive down to Goblin Valley and bring Ed and Anne on a hike of Little Wild Horse, and also the Wedge area to our north, but as we've already filmed episodes in those locations we declined to repeat them here.

We've had a GMC Yukon and couldn't make it up the concrete step into the viaduct without damaging our exhaust (see at 6:38 into your clip). The concrete was much higher than the stone ramp on that day. Maybe the creek bed in front of it was more washed out from a storm or something. And there were not enough stones to build a more elevated transition. So, we left without seeing the Head Of Sinbad. But hey, what a great reason to go back there one day.

It's always good to have a reason to return, John! Honestly, Homie's truck with the 8-foot bed *barely* cleared that step with his running boards. It was down to a fraction of an inch.

Well done - you definitely captured the feeling of the openness in the great outdoors. BTW, based on your recommendation in prior video, today we received our Fi GPS Dog Tracker. Wow, the integration of its smartphone software app is awesome - easy peasy to install and operate. Setting up your pet's geo-fence was flawless and it's connection to the AT&T cellular network was completely transparent to the user, happening silently in the background when your pet is beyond Wi-Fi range. And it's amazing that the rechargeable battery in the collar works for 1-3 months before needing a recharge. Thanks again for your recommendation - loving it and having the security do always be able to pinpoint our beloved pet when out in the boondocks is definitely comforting! WTG Marc 😊👌😋

What a perfect spot: close to main road, but no noise, lots of trees, but plenty of flat open areas to camp, nice scenery and things to see, but no crowds, only a few campers close, but good friends. Nice of Ed to set it up for you. Nice to see two of my favorite utube campers together in one spot! Did I detect your use of a 360 camera? Great first camping video of the season!! As always, enjoy your presentation. We probably didn't miss you by much. May 4-7, we were boondocking in Red Canyon a few miles from the San Rafael bridge and the Mexican Mountain Wilderness. The wind died the last evening, and the cedar gnats feasted on us. Otherwise great fun. I expect we'll revisit the Swell in the fall.

Beautiful area. I noticed the smaller dog was being carried during a portion of the walk. We have a small dog with ACL problems. We have been talking about how we are going to carry her . A baby carriage is too bulky . Maybe a doggie backpack. We shall see.....

Carolynn, Jackie's dog Patches has congestive heart issues, so she tries to not overwork him. She used that backpack on a 4-mile hike through the Little Wild Horse slot canyon. She speaks highly of it, and picked it up on Amazon.

@@thomfisher1100 I was thinking of the hills east of Richfield by the OHV area; they are striped, red, yellow and white. I do know there is oil in that area, I've seen the pumps.

@@2012escapee1 I know where you are speaking of. Yes, there are pump jacks, but producing from deep underground. Surface rocks colors are from different minerals and sediments of different kind. I do love those colors however. Pretty stuff.

Finally the place named after barrier canyon renamed horse shoe canyon home of great valley greatly in size and shape looks like Shamon or mystical creature hybrid of man or animal snake is common symbol that hint at arena spiritual divine two other figures greater head of Sinbad area there are lot to find there do at least half day as Dutch man arch just miles south west of panel lone warrior panel is few more miles south west of 1 70 Swasey cabin eagle canyon arch are also within reach along old mining trucks structures toward red canyon road black dragon panel pretty good array off beaten path arches rock art pioneer history in central Utah thank you for showing us such magnificent landscapes you are as guide tourist for all people around world stay safe blessed good luck to you your family friends

Hello Marc! Welcome back onto the Van Halen tour of the country!! Once again, your videos really highlight the special treats to see on your travels to these various locations. I see it isn't terribly far from us in CO, so I've pinned the heck out of my google map with "want to go" pins. It is also great you are able to enjoy this area with your friends!! Those were some great petroglyphs! I like the contrast of the darker drawings against the light colored stone! We're heading towards our property tomorrow to check out the petroglyphs in that area; but the stone there is a darker red making it harder to see some of the art. QUESTION: Are the Dyrt offline maps good enough to hike with? as in, are they topographical too? Safe travels!

Thanks Alan, and we hope that you're having a good trip out to the property today! We're thrilled that we're giving you ideas for places to go and explore. Yes, The Dyrt has a vector topographic layer available on its maps. You could easily use those for hiking. If you're on Android, though, we highly recommend an app called Backcountry Navigator for offline topographic hiking maps. Backcountry Navigator has available a multitude of mapping options including street maps, topographic maps and satellite imagery, all of which can be downloaded. Rather than vector maps, we love their shaded CalTopo 24K map layer, which appears much like enhanced USGS topos. The last time I checked Backcountry Navigator costs ~$10 but it's well worth the price, and is justified as the app's author needs to pay to license the maps.

The title indicates that you camped at Head of Sinbad but your link on Dyrt showed the 131 Dispersed camp area which is some distance away. I’m confused 🤔 (don’t worry...that’s usually the case anymore). Looks like a terrific spot.

Jim, it was a bit of creative license to come up with a compelling title -- "Exit 131 Dispersed" has a bit less charm to it. 😉 The entire plateau area surrounding the Exit 131 area is known as Sinbad Country, and there's a rock formation only about two miles southwest of the exit called the Head of Sinbad. It really is a wonderful area for boondocking.

How are you doing master Marc we are as foreigners subscribers admire your style of life tours or travel around world explore new places learn new things unfortunately we can’t do this but think god internet KZfaq channels making us as tourists around world or university students so that as always iam gathering main information about place you visited here it’s head of Sinbad is one of best preserved ancient piece of rock art in world its sits unassumingly on wall dozen feet of ground in desert wasteland of northern San Rafael Sewell thousands of cars pass nearby everyday few know what treasures lies just mile north of paved highway whole area around this barrier canyon style pictographs is named head of Sinbad offers pretty decent array of places to check out while down there combination of materials native Americans used to make this piece masterful mix of paint locations was key scholars estimate pictographs

Hi, i'm sure you fill up with water before you get to these places, how do you find water before you get there? thanks

In this case we filled up before we left the RV park in Salt Lake City. However, we recommend using sanidumps.com for finding dump stations, many of which have potable water. The nearest water source to here is the Love's station in Green River, where there are potable water hydrants at each fuel pump island. We went down to see Goblin Valley the other day, and while there we filled up a bladder tank at the state park campground. There's always a way.

The Swell is a true playground, Norm. From here you also have easy access to both the Wedge /Little Grand Canyon 30 miles to the north, and Goblin Valley/Little Wild Horse Canyon 30 miles to the south. We've visited both this week from here, although we didn't film either as they've both been featured in past videos of ours.

This was a swell swell, even the second time around! Those pictographs seem very similar to others in different parts of the southwest. Whatever it was, was so profound that many different tribes at the time all felt the need to document what they saw and experienced. Gord

Thanks Gord! Yes, Barrier Canyon-style rock art appears throughout southern Utah, northern Arizona and southwestern Colorado. We love finding these pictograph panels. One of the most impressive I've seen is the Harvest Scene panel in the Maze district of Canyonlands udink.org/2016/10/22/maze-overlook-to-harvest-scene/ . Because of the effort required to get to it, I was entirely alone on the entire hike down and back. Sitting there by myself looking at the panel, I let my mind drift a bit and I could almost feel the artist standing there painting those figures. It was an ethereal experience.

@@GrandAdventure Yes... I remember that episode. I don't think most people realize the effort you went through to get both there and back while video documenting it... by yourself. In order to generate enough content you had to continually stop, set up your camera equipment then shoot yourself staged along the hike. Giving yourself hardly enough time to really enjoy the trip. Only when you got there could you stop and really enjoy what you came for. At first, doing all this video stuff is fun. But after some time, it is mostly just work. Nevertheless, you have to play along like it is all vicarious and impromptu... when it is completely staged... required for a decent production presentation. You must enjoy doing it at some level... but the work and effort is no joke. Thanks for doing these and sacrificing you time and energy to make these available for people's viewing. 👍👊 Gord

Still liking your half ton towing? Are you carrying your generator on the back hitch? How’s that working? Been thinking about doing the same, we have a 100 lb. generator.

Yes, the Tundra is still performing admirably. Getting to the site in this video required ascending an 8-mile grade at a consistent 6% pitch with no respite, and the Tundra pulled at a steady 50 mph the whole way, passing semis that were climbing at only 20-25 mph. The generator is indeed riding in a cargo basket on the Durango's 3000/300 lb. hitch; because we're so close to payload capacity it's better for us to put heavy stuff like that 100-lb generator and 10 gallons of gas in that cargo basket as far back as possible. We have the added benefit of needing only to remove the cover and plug it in to use it right in place, too.
