Seventies had so many beautiful, classy, talented female singers with voices like songbirds. No decade before or since could touch them. Rita Coolidge, Linda Ronstadt, Olivia Newton John, Carly Simon, Emmylou Harris, Karen Carpenter. No auto tuned vocals, no repetitive and perverted lyrics, no slutty outfits and behavior.

The first 8-track I ever owned was a gift of Kris’s debut album ‘Kristofferson’ in 1971 from my dad. I don’t know why(maybe my pop bought for himself and didn’t like it) but at 9 years of age I had never heard anything like his songs before. I realize now that album was formative to my personal tastes. Also, this year (1973) he starred in one of my favorite movies-Peckinpah’s ‘Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.’ A film with a strange release history, I have seen (in 4 different edits) probably about 100 times and it hypnotizes me (in each of the versions) like few works of cinema ever have. Thank you Mr Kristofferson.

His songs come from his soul. 👍✌️

Another good line up, Kristofferson's Loving Her is So Good. Love Commander Cody, this is the 1st time I've seen them. Early ELO, and as Paul Williams predicted we did get a lot more from them. It was the first time I've heard any other song but Dancing by The Moonlight by King Harvest, again if you only listen to golden oldies radio, you could believe they only made 1 song, same with Brewer and Shipley. Rita Coolidge, smooth as butter milk. Next week's lineup looks just as enticing.

The Monkees (with the late Davy Jones on vocals) did "Someday Man" (45 stereo single only) which was the flip B side of "Listen To The Band" (the late Mike Nesmith on vocals from 1969 "Present Micky, Davy & Mike"). King Harvest follow up "A Little Bit Like Magic" went to # 91 (Billboard Hot 100) in late May of 1973 & released only as a 45 stereo single. The late Canadian singer Jesse Winchester did the original "Yankee Lady" from his 1970 self-titled Ampex album. The Brewer & Shipley's remake is on 1973 "Rural Space" album (their 4th & final album for Kama Sutra) because the duo went to Capitol Records in 1974.

It was surprising that Kristofferson didn’t perform “Why Me” from his current album at the time “Jesus Was A Capricorn” but did sing “Out Of Mind, Out Of Sight” which was never released as a single while “Why Me” was released in March of 1973 and spent 38 weeks on the Hot 100 and was still climbing the chart when this show aired. And he and Rita did perform a song from their duet album “Full Moon” which wouldn’t be released until September of 1973. Still it was nice to see them perform together.

Thank you for uploading this and all the memories which go with it. Where were you in June 1973? For me it was the summer between the 3rd and 4th grade and I was pretty much glued to whatever music was on the radio, especially American Top 40 on Sunday mornings. The USA was in a difficult time between pulling out of the totally unjustified Vietnam conflict, and exposing our dirty crook President, and a lot of emotional insecurity and attempts at healing filtered through to the music scene. We were also on the brink of the superficial escapist disco era - oh no! ;-)

Holy crap, I couldn’t have said it better! Was the summer between 3rd and 4th grade for me as well. My family had just moved into a house that my dad built on the lake in the country. Spent my childhood fishing, swimming, skiing, and riding dirt bikes. Summer vacation started on Memorial Day and ended until Labor day, and seemed to last forever! This music was the soundtrack of my youth. Plus Elton John, Eagles, Chicago, Rod Stewart, etc. All could be found for a dime on the jukebox at the campground rec room up the road. Would take our allowance and walk barefoot up the road to play pinball, buy candy, and play their jukebox. Damn those were beautiful, simpler times! Wish there was a way to go back in time and warn the childhood me to appreciate and savor every minute, cause it goes so fast.

I never really understood the popularity of Paul Williams. He is a brilliant songwriter I'll give him that but as a singer there's something almost sad about it. Yet he was beyond popular and on almost every kind of television you can imagine for close to 10 years I think he did over a hundred spots on The Tonight show. I've heard him interviewed recently and apparently he was coked out the entire time, I go back and watch these things now and it's like I still don't know why it's popular but it's much funnier. And yes of course I can't wait to see this

Maybe because he wrote such great songs, and was generally likeable. I mean, I was a kid, so I don't know for sure. He did have a sad quality in his voice. But, like you, I look forward to this, too! ✌️

@@StephanieJeanne yes there was definitely a sad quality to Paul. But if you ever seen any of his Tonight show clips they're just laughing and couldn't be any happier. There were a lot of singing artists at this time who I always thought were somewhat mediocre and yet were huge stars. If you ever run across any of his interviews done over the last few years they're fascinating

@@AldousHuxleysCatThey probably had cocktails before those shows, too, and Carson was goofy anyway. lol I'll look for those interviews.

@@StephanieJeanne I believe they cut way down on preshow drinks after the George Gobels incident. Long as you made Carson laugh, you were golden

I just love everything about him, but the voice is unique, genuine and disarming. Not to everyone's taste, I know.

Damn what happened to all the incredibly talented songwriters like Paul Williams, Kris Kristofferson, Jimmy Webb, etc? Pop/rock songwriters now churn out mostly assembly line garbage for product. Sad shame.
