There are many debates among hunters and that holds true for those of us dedicated to the specific niche of night hunting. One of those debates is between the use of bolt action rifles and AR style rifles. Many people new to the world of night hunting aren't looking for a debate but are truly asking questions to weigh their options on which style of rifle setup is right for them. On this podcast we discuss the pros and cons of each style of rifle for night hunters.

*** Why Hunt Hogs? ***
Our journey into wild/feral hog hunting started like many others living in rural communities. We didn't start hog hunting for fun or sport... we did it because we had to. You see, hogs cause millions of dollars of damage and destruction each year in rural communities and our situation was no different. Hogs were destroying our land and that our of friends and family. The vast majority of hunting stories that you hear about on this channel are hogs, boars and sows, taken from family land... this problem is personal for us...

*** Why Hunt Coyotes and Predators? ***
Coyotes and Predators, similar to hogs, cause financial stress for many families in rural communities. Coyotes kill livestock, plain and simple. Ranchers have battled coyotes killing cattle since the early days of ranching and it costs them dearly. Cattle ranching is a business, the cows aren't pets, every time they lose a calf to a coyote those families lose a paycheck. Cattle ranchers hate coyotes just as much as Farmers hate hogs! We hunt coyotes to protect the livelihood of our friends and neighbors that depend on their cattle business to feed their family...

Good topic idea and it was well-discussed. Another item I'd mention is that it isn't only the length-of-pull that can be an issue with NV/thermal optics on bolt guns, but also the comb height. AR stocks are designed to position your eye well with an optic lens centerline that is about 2.5" above the bore (this was done because of the original AR sights/carry-handle). Your typical bolt action has a stock designed for an optic centerline of maybe 1.5" above the bore. This means that most box-style NV or thermals sit very high on a conventional bolt gun and the shooter's cheek is barely touching the stock. The 30mm tube designs can fix this, but the box-style units are really a double whammy for fitment on a conventional bolt action. A modern chassis-rifle like a Sig Cross bolt action, having a fully adjustable LOP and comb, can minimize these problems while having all the same attachment points that an AR offers. I like the fit/feel of the AR platform, so the Cross works well for me in many roles when I'm not using my AR rifles. Another item worth mentioning is that a bolt gun does not require any tuning for functioning with a suppressor. Some (not all) AR rifles do require adjustable gas blocks or different buffer springs and weights to function well with a given ammo/suppressor combo. My AR15 .223 runs fine with a can, but my AR10 .308 needed an adjustable gas block for suppressed use. Both are indeed rather dirty, as you guys mentioned. Of course, the best answer is always to have multiple examples of both ARs and bolt guns!😉

Love the fact y'all are Grendel lovers like i am. These days my AR Grendel is secondary to my Howa mini Grendel due to weight. The AR I do use often is my NV short range hmr upper in a polymer lower. Super lightweight and easy to carry and therefore take an offhand shot quickly if needed. Up here in Ohio its coyote country, almost no pigs up here. Only wished I had my AR Grendel once on a short range runner but the weight differential trumps follow up shots 99% of the time. Grendel rules!

One reason I use a bolt rifle is because it's easier to manipulate at night without making a lot of noise. I've had buddies scare off coyote when charging their AR's after traveling to a new stand. If I lived in Pig country, I would use a semi auto.

Guys, what about a dependable AK-47 in 7.62 x 39 suppressed? I shoot several AK’s suppressed in action competition with thousands of rounds and never one jamming issue.

As popular as the AK-47 frame is, you just don't see many folks mounting thermals to them for some reason... You are right about the dependability though

My next bolt gun will be a Brownells Barreled action .223 or 22-250 and a oryx chassis. That is about as custom I can go with my budget.

AR are nice. I own three. However, I hate when my AR short stroke. I have to go through a checklist of checking a lot of parts to find what is causing a gas issue. With my bolt guns, I have less issues.
