Word of caution. NEVER use the the pipe sliding coupling that joins two pipes to adjust the size (length) of the overall assembly. With all the tension of supporting heavy loads, the pipes can slip and the whole thing can come crashing down. Better to either cut the pipe, or replace with a shorter piece.

Hi! This is correct. But if you have access to a good shop you can make up some custom speedrail with predrilled holes (I make 'em every 1 1/2") that you can bolt thru (as in two smart stainless steel bolts) completely penetrating the sliding coupling and the pipes. If you're not hanging 5k's up there, you should be golden - again it's down to experience, reasonable use of the tool + good standards and practices. The trickiest we find is that in newer homes/hotels the studs hiding behind the sheetrock are never where we expect them to be and they are kinda 'springy' becuse the builder is using metal c-rails or eucalyptus. When we see too much 'spring' in the walls we look to tie into lamp or ceiling fan box that is attached to a roof stringer.

I agree, but he could just have a small set of pipe you slide inside between the 2 other pipe so it can't slide in. Would be a much better space saver. Or another solution would be add a layer of wood on one side.

What would be way cooler is two sections of pipe the same length but different diameters. One inside the other, then you could transport/store it easier and always have the right length. The coupler would need to be a little more special though. Like a shower curtain rod.

What is the max length you would recommend for a pipe spreader setup like this?

Could you in a safe way also use this vertically to replace a (heavy) stand? From floor to ceiling that is. Thx

Davy Maurits as long as the ceiling and floor are parrallel to each other like the walls, and you look for joists instead of studs. But yes, you can.

So I have a 1 1/2 tube spreader. What kind of pipe do I need for that? is it still the same Schedule 40, just a wider mount, or is there another name for "Schedule #" for it?
@GripTips
@GripTips 5 жыл бұрын
Ranger 7 Studios just a wider mount, honestly though? Wait for the Ep I’m about to post either tonite or tomorrow at latest. I got a new spreader that I think is waaaaay better

Ranger 7 Studios just hang tight before you sell that. You might not have to. It’ll make more sense once I can get this up today😉😉

Can you use a over under pipe bracket to connect the pipe to use the same size pipes in different situations or will that impact the stability too much?

Ryan Emanuel you know I don't really know for sure but my gut says you'd be ok. I'll have to try it

Grip Tips, yes you can. I've seen it done where one over-under is used as a coupler, and also where it's used to make a complete full length over-under spreader. As a side note, we here on the west coast call them Speedrail spreaders.

Jeff Locke ah but you can't say speed rail no more Hahahaha. Ugh how dumb

Hey Ryan, try having your machine shop drill holes in your over under coupler and in a couple of key pipe lenghts so they match up - with a double bolt set in both the 'over' and the 'under' you can trust it not to slip when you least want it to...

(esl) hi dave, how would you avoid camera shaking if you have to shoot in a room with a wooden floor (that bends when actors are walking)?
@GripTips
@GripTips 7 жыл бұрын
Tumult Film Tumult Film Tumult Film I think it all depends. Is the shot locked off or is it gonna dolly, jib up or down, and how heavy is the camera? Cause if it's on a jib than you could position the jib in a different room and boom the camera into the other room. I'm Gonna guess that you probably don't have a jib and might be on a budget? And that the camera probably is going to dolly. Here's what I think I would do. 1) try to see if you can add support to the hardwood floors underneath, like if there's a basement, rent a couple tube stretchers (or wall spreaders) and add support to the floor. Just make sure you are spreading between the basement floor and the 2x4 frame beams underneath. 2) if there is no basement, or anyway underneath the floor, you could rent two tube stretchers, and make it work like a Dana dolly. But this might not work if the camera is too heavy, so if you are familiar with building a truss, you might have to build a truss system that adapts to the spreader you choose. 3) a cable cam I think there's too many factors that could go into this but, if you wanna PM me on Twitter, maybe I can get a better idea what you are trying to accomplish with your shot and I can try to advise you from there and I'll also ask around to some fellow grips what they would do.

Grip Tips thank you dave. i don't have a project right now, but ran into the problem before (the floor didn't move when i was scouting alone). after that i always thought about this while location scouting and dismissed some locations because of it (i always look around for locations to build some kind of pool for future projects). i came up with some ideas but wasn't confident enough to try it out. you points are matching exactly what i thought might be solutions and i will try this in the future. thank you very much.
